hate to put a jeep part on a land rover

why in the world are the military bonnet cathes $70 from RN (or is that the answer--miltary or land rover?)i can do a search for jeep hood latches and there are hundereds of them for around $10 (i can even get them in stainless steel for the same price $10)they look to be the same thing. how much technology could be in a spring load latch. will i go to hell for this move????:naughty

Yeah, I hear you there. Being out of work a total of 16 months since 9/11 has taught me a lot about pinching my pennies, especially when it comes to outfitting a Land Rover.

I didn't mean it as a slam, I just think Nathan at Pangaea does great business as do most of our small vendors and I try to encourage patronage as often as possible.

Back in '95 when I bought my first D90, it was nearly impossible to find any aftermarket stuff for my vehicle, so I really appreciate all the small guys out there selling quality products today.

I have been off with a back injury for 7 months and any LR purchases have been put on the back burner. I will hopefuly be back to duty by the end of the week.
For the last 9 years I have personaly kept British Pacific in buisness between a RR, Disco, D90, D130 and two series trucks that I have owned during that time. BP used to be 5 minutes from my house, that was dangerous. Now they are 30 minutes, still dangerous. When I get around to buying hood latches I will definetly get them from Pangea, the price is right.

We can get philosophical here. Ever read Zen and the art of motorcylce maintanence? At the core of the book is what type of personality you are. Do you use genuine parts always or use what you can and have available. Extrapalate that to the Defender; challenge is the US market. In the UK and Europe, there are 10s of thousands of Defenders so parts are mass produced and cheaper. In the USA with 8000 (wasn't it about 2000 units for 4 years) defenders distribution is limited but fixed costs are well fixed and so are high. That means high prices.
I just read the thread about someone changing his 1994 square taillights to round ones. An LED full 3 light panel was priced at $1000. But for a 1/10th of that, you can piece one together from various internet shops. May not be LR, not Defender, and not official but ... i'm Ok with it.

I think you guys south of the border have it harder than us in Canada. We have some good suppliers but we also have a steady supply of wrecked parts coming from the British millitary here. Don't quote me because I haven't had to find replacements but I would guess that hood latches are common up here, all the army trucks have them. Try www.roverlanders.bc.ca and check out the vendors listed or place a wanted post.

Has anyone installed the pangea (or for that matter, any) hood pins on their truck? If so, where did you mount the post? Any installation tips before I purchase them?

Resurecting this thread as I'm looking for pictures of the Pangea or any other hood pins on a Defender. My cable became really stuck today and I'm thinking of replacing with a pair of the ones from Nathan.

I have not seen the pins Nathan sells but I was just looking at www.summitracing.com and noticed they have hood pins from $9 a set up to $20 a set. Not too bad.

I've got hood pins that i got from a racing shop local to me. They are the same ones that Pangea sell. I'll take pictures in a little bit. But I mounted them on the fender as close to the radiator as i could get my hands. The passangers side was a bit of a pain due to the power steer resivor.

Don't discount the fact that when you buy from a Rover vendor like Pangea, you can call up Nathan and ask how the hell to put it on--with Summit they would probably ask what a D90 was.

I put the military ones from RN on the truck (in a brief lapse in my usual cheapness). While shockingly expensive for what they are, they work great. If you need a picture, give me a shout.

I put hood pins on about two years ago, and the 2 main reasons I like them:

1) I got to drill another hole in my Defender
2) I got to get rid of that worthless hood cable

I did primer the edges of all the metal I went through. On the outer front edges of the bonnet, the pins are secured in the piece of steel above the radiator. I positioned the pins as far outboard as I could and still have a flat surface for the latches to mount on.

Easy project, more holes, all good . . .
