Here's one of many pics he sent me.

Same guy, Daniel Oppenhiem. It has so far been great. Have had it on a few trips to Death Valley. Last week the front shocks blew and will be replacing suspension all around soon. I also will be installing an Edelbrock intake manifold and 4 barrel carb in the near future as well as Jet Hot coated headers and new exhaust. As soon as I got the truck I ruptured a dic in my back and have been out of commision for 7 months. Now that I am getting better I hope to start all the work on the truck.

kellymoe
May 19th, 2004, 09:35 PM
Heddman makes the hedders and I will have them Jet Hot coated. Summit has the hedders for$106 or right around there.
Jet Hot cost is $165. The hedders are for a right hand drive RR. Should be OK on my truck since it is also rhd. But I cant do any of this stuff untill I sell the 109. Come on someone must want this classic?

Slow cars. Ha Ha. The only thing going slower than me on the road are series rovers. It actualy does do ok for a truck that size. Will cruise at 75 all day but throw a hill or headwind at it and it starts to slow down a bit. As far as power gains? I dont realy know. It has twin SU carbs right now and I think they came restricted from the factory to a max horsepower of just under 100. If that is the case I would think I could gain another 50+ hp between the intake manifold, carb, high flow air filter, headers and new exhaust without cats. It has a LT85-LT230 gearbox and Salisbury rear end so any increase in power should not be a problem on the drive train. I think that has more to do with the driver anyway. My 109 has a chevy engine and I have had no problems with the drivetrain because I dont drive it with a heavy foot.

Not that garage looking at that pic.

Mine now barely fits with 33's and a 2" lift. I've got about 3/4" with a full gas tank. We'll see how close it gets once the tank's dry.

Here's a pic of mine currently. Bad photo though, my digital camera is dying. She goes in for paint next week. I've still got to decide on a new front bumper.

Well this is a before pic considering I haven't done much to the truck excpet for the lift and tires. Sorry to say she hasn't seen dirt since I bought her late last year, though she has made numerous trips to Home Depot. Here's an action shot, she's carrying 16' crown moldings....hehehe

I think this one will be a life long project, I guess I'll have the after pics sometime in 2014...hehehe

Nice looking truck there, Al. Hey do you have a lot of 'sway' with yours? What shocks/spings did you install? Notice there's no front sway bar on these NAS 110s? I'm trying to figure out how to tighten my truck up. Looking at the new Koni RAID shocks at the moment.... I have 751s in front and 755s in back, and EE says I can't get stiffer springs from OME without a bigger lift, but I don't want to go higher... what to do, what to do...

Hey Doug,

Actually I don't get much sway at all due to the heavier load springs on the front and rear, but she does sit quite high. I can't say I'm totally sold on the stiffness of the ride though? But then again I don't drive her like a sports car, I drive her like a UPS truck...hehehe.

As far as the setup, she's on....

N115/764 Front
N44/754 Rear

I'll reserve judgment until I get her out on the trail.

Philip,
Thanks man. It's always fun to drive. Not only do you get the usual looks from passers buy, you get a real rubber necking from other D-90 drivers trying to wrap there head around what they just saw.

Kelly,
I can't seem to get enough of DV. Just can't find the time to get out there more often. That pic was taken out by the Race Track. The Lipencott Lead Mine is in the distance. I don't know what it is but the Race Track allways trips me out. The Saline Valley Rd is next on the list.

Got the new OME 751/764 coils and shocks in last weekend. I also got new BFG 285/75 MTs this week too. We also removed the sway bars. Finally got to take it out to the ranch for some offroading this weekend. Here's the best shot my 7 year old son got. He doesn't like riding with me when I get the truck 'tilty'. I know I could twist it more but my diff-lock isn't functional right now so I kept lifting a tire preventing more angle.

I still haven't decided on a replacment front bumper after the accident. Suggestions? Money isn't a huge object but the more I save on it the more I have for other goodies.

Here is my before/after. The last one was on a recent trip to Hole in the Rock Utah--what a great trip to take, by the way! What made it extra special is that it was the madden voyage of my on-board-air system. I designed and built a mounting bracket for V-belt non-AC engines to mount York compressors and it puts out enough to not only fill our tires, but run pretty much any air tool!

It's been a busy couple of months but the D-90 is back together and looking good. I like how the rear corner turned out. I bent it as straight as I could then 5-bar'ed it. The only thing I didn't do myself was the paint. A local shop did that for me.

If you didn't see the 'before' pics go to: The Wreck Gallery (http://www.nnin.net/gallery).

Only things left to do are put the 5-bar on the wings and bonnet when it finally gets here on its slow boat from the UK. And lights once I decide on what kind I want.

Thanks to all for answering my stupid questions during the rebuild and for your recommendations and advice.

Of course, I finish it and there's rain predicted for the next 7 days.

"...what is the TWR Edition?"

Thanks Mike, Rachel and I are really pleased with it.

From the Land Rover FAQ:
"Brooklands/TWR:
The body-styling kit designed by Tom Walkenshaw Racing (TWR) that was first introduced on the Brooklands model in '91 was featured in the U.S. brochure for the first time (for the '95 SWB model). County Classics with this kit were sold in Epsom Green and Beluga Black.

The kit looks good, but would be destroyed by any real off-roading. For now it's my wife's daily driver, but once we're ready to start wheeling it, all that plastic will come off in favor of new bumpers and rock sliders.

This is one of my favorite pics, taken after about 28 hours on the SNIM Iron Ore train in Mauritania ("the longest train in the world"). It would be about a 3 day drive to get where we were going, so the train wasn't too bad. It was also the first (and only) time I've ever hired a whole railroad car myself! We surprisingly got a full 8 hours sleep in the front seats with sleeping bags, even if we were a little stiff in the morning. After we got off the train, we headed south into the desert, but that's a whole other story... A beautiful country is Mauritania.

Truck did well, on some of the those pics, only 3 trucks out of about 300 tried that trail. Me, a guy on 40's and a guy on 44's. I felt inadequate, untill I schooled them! hehe

Michael, awesome truck!

I'm curious about the Konis. I have the Heavy Tracks, but not the Raids. Are they much stiffer than the HTs -- what were you running before the Raids? Have you modified the shock towers/mounts?

Thanks,

Doug W.

D110XD
February 4th, 2005, 10:23 AM
Hi Doug!

Thanks!

Before I put in the RAIDS I had the original 110/130 dampers.
I haven't modified the mounts/towers. They're strong enough for my purposes.

The Heavy Track RAID series is stiffer and more heavy duty than the "normal" HTs.
The outer tubes are 2.5mm thick, so that that the damper still functions in case of deformation of outer tube by impact of rocks.
The Reservoir tube has a big bore (70mm) and the oil volume has been doubled for better cooling & efficiency.
They have solid, robust heavy duty attachments. The rebound forces are adjustable in order to adapt your damper to your springs and / or loads.
They also have a double dynamic protection:
- Rebound: progressive hydraulic rebound stop valve
- Bump: extra security in case of big compression impact .......
They are available for max. 5cm longer springs.

I think, they're worth the money. Absolutely.:grin

Hello all, new here.

This is my 1989 90. Originally a hard top now a station wagon. 2.5 "19J" turbo diesel, standard LT77 gearbox and transmission, Colway 235/85x16 mud terrain tyres on Wolf rims, LR seat covers and cubby box, rear bench seats, side steps, electric fan, Td5 Defender steering wheel, soon to have HD Range Rover springs. My only vehicle, used daily to get to and from the farm, running around there, running errands, greenlaning, off roading and towing. 133,000 miles on the clock still pulls like a train and starts really easily.

http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=14128

Also have a 1969 Series 2A 88 truck cab with a V8 conversion, and a 1974 Series 3 88 diesel truck cab I'm breaking for spares.

Close. Well may be in climate perhaps... D110 & SIII are in the Philippine Islands (read near equator). Over the last 7 years, I travel to Asia so often that I acquired these very capable vehicles there. D110 was shot in jungles of the Sierra Madre Mountains while the SIII was shot in front of an old (abandoned) Marcos vacation mansion in Laguna Province.

stevewhitaker
November 10th, 2005, 10:12 PM
Dang you respond fast Mike! Yeah, installing the gears was a little bit of a challenge, but not as bad as some other tasks I've forced upon myself. I managed to do some modest offroading here in southern Illinois to check out the new gearing and was as pleased as I had hoped. I really hope to get out west next year where I used to do all my offroading so I can really take advantage of the new low range. It is just so great to be able to walk the truck over just about anything at lower speeds and RPMs. I have heard you really like your new gearing as well.

I have 72:1 gearing in my old Series II, and I used to really hack off a couple of my Jeep buddies, one of whom shoved a 401 V8 into his CJ, because they had a lot of trouble negotiating the steep, rocky terrain with their gearing despite their advantage in horsepower while I chugged over it all with relative ease. You could read their lips as they watched me cruise over the same trails that had given them fits while my under-powered engine was chugging at a shade above idle. Of course, the tables were turned when we were on the highway where my engine encouraged me to obey the 55 MPH speed limit even when there wasn't one.

Perhaps if time permits I'll get a chance to go out with some of you folks back east so you can show me how to negotiate that terrain. Since most of my work/fun up until recently has been out west checking out the geology and archeology, I have never before had the chance to explore the eastern trails.

Cool! Yeah I love the gears! They work out just right for me! Glad the install went good, did you get any pics along the way?

Yeah if you ever feel like venturing out this way let me know and we'll hit all the good trails!

PS, I love Series rigs, wish I had anough money and time for 2 rovers!

Dang you respond fast Mike!I have Mike wired in for direct input from the Forum thanks to a joint venture between The D-90 Source and Oakley sunglass division. He looks bad ass with the shades but can move more than 30 feet from the link. Working on next generation wireless so he will be allowed to use the bathroom.

Funny, we tested some stuff like that a year ago! Although it was for military use they had a screen about 1" by 1" that displayed 640x640 res on the inside of a helmet visor. It was pretty cool!

I can't think of all the trail names off the top of my head. My dad and I just went up for the monthly run. I think we did some of rattler, turtle, blueberry?...all i know is that most of the trails proved pretty difficult for the jeeps because of there tendency to spin on the ice. Good times though.

i dont know you might make it, pedal to the metal i thought about trying but didnt need to go thru to get to where i was going so I went around. It was deep and about the same length as the wheelbase. I had to walk a ways to get someone to pull me out.

You could have made it! In the famous words of Jimmy "Third low and BOOT IT!"

Of course if I tried it, the mud would be 6 feet deep and as soon as I hit it the engine would jump out of the truck :P

Hmmm. Off roading.... I remember that..... all I need is a new gearbox and I can go do that again.
It's amazing how you miss reverse gear when it's completely shot.
And before anyone says anything about not trying the foward optopn hard enough, reverse was blown because I was trying too hard to start with.
Easter is penciled in for a gear box swap....
