Well ive always wanted a defender, and i got a chance to pcik one up a few weeks ago thats been sitting in my buddies garage for a few years waiting to get fixed.. i gave up a 4.6 d1 , and some cash..so im into this rig about 6800. i got the D, a replacement tub, euro version, or ROW version i guess, New fenders, skins, extra doors, a poe alluminum top, soft top, a bimini top, new cage parts minus the cantrails, and a few other odds and ends...

HErs a few pics of it with the new tub, and new drivers side fender. And some of the carnage

OK heres some more pics for your enjoyments.. I went and picked my cage bits, my interior stuff, and a few other parts as you can see in the pile in the garage, right now im putting on the new pass fender wing assy, and Im installing my Tcase..

as you cna see the bulkhead where the windscreen attaches is a little tweaked I think a piece of plate and the winch of my truggy should be able to straighten it? eh?

doubt it will be much of an issue out there in UT. a good body man can bash/pull that out to something approaching good enough.

mightymg
August 8th, 2009, 10:36 AM
Im not an anal person, so for me! its going together very well. IM quite suprised that the body lines are lining up as well as they have..

Hopefully my color match is done soon so I can get the ole girl in the garage, so I can shoot the nose..

As far as rust and galvy stuff.. we dont have rust issues here very much, mine is pretty much completly rust free, i have a little bit of surface rust on the frame where the previous owner had a belly skid on there, but thats it...

Lane,

You had mentioed that you were going to paint it Trident green to match the tub.

FYI I do not think that is Trident green, Trident is an aquaish color.

You can buy a replacement part that would completely replace the dented part of the bulkhead for about $30.

At first my memory made me think the tub was trident green, when i picked it up i realized it wasnt, so i dropped a peice off for a color match...

I have seen them for less $$. You would probably have to pull the remaining part back a little to make it line up, but much easier than trying to fix what you have there.

BTW since you already have the front ROW style filler part, I would run dual tanks. I think Bstraw was going to sell the tank out of yeastie.

That was on my to do list, I was gonna put the rear filler in te fender well, annd the front would be for a second tank..

As far as the repair piece it will work even though it says series 111? maybe a stupid questions? I was gonna cut mine off, beat um straight and weld them back on, but that peice would make life way easier!

evilfij
August 9th, 2009, 03:02 AM
99% sure it is the same part as everyone sells them as defender and series. Les at RN will know for sure.

"I was gonna put the rear filler in te fender well"

Do it right as you are going to paint the whole thing, right. Cut it out of the damaged tub and put it in the right spot. Should not be too hard and a hammer and dolly will round the edges in an acceptable way.

On another note, unless you are stripping the bulkhead, it is easier to paint the whole thing black than green.

I had a buddy in southern utah that Endoed it off a wash, he got it totalled bought a new one and took off the lockers and stuff. then my friend that did all the swap work got it from him, and sat on it for 2 years with hopes of rebuilding it, In the meantime he gathered all the parts to fix it, and he never got a chance to do its o i swooped in and licked it..

its about to get some more changes soon!

Buck,

I have always loved your D-90. You have really taken it a long ways. Keep up the good work and the innovation. I love to see extreme D-90's and you probably have the most extreme D-90 out there. OK MORE MORE MORE>> tonight was very productive thanks to my buds showing up...

Well tonight I took my 30 spline rear end out of the trug, I cut off the coilover tabs... next I took stock axle out, and I cut the coil spring perches off so I could weld them onto my old housing.. over all I think it came out AWESOME!! and i looks very clean and strong..

I still need to put on my new rear rovertracks links, but i was in a hurry tonight..

Also the rear springs are OME 762 disco front springs... In the rear they give it a perfect height. My new softer and shorter front coilover springs will be here tomorrow so it will be level..

Thanks!

As far as the front coilover I went a little plasma cutter crazy! Im gonna leave it open, I try to steer clear of mud as much as possible, so I dont think it will get to gummed up.. However it would be really easy to take some sheet metal and weld it in to the hoops, and the old original inners...

I think you'll find you want to cover it. I ran without the stock covers for years before finally buying some (I guess the PO had aftermarket shocks and went back to stock for the sale) and even that little hole let in way too much mud.

How high is the top of the fender off the ground? It's hard to gauge the height.

charles
p.s. The shocks and mounts came today. thanks again!

Not bad. That's only 6" higher than mine with a 2" OME and half of that is likely in the tires.

Looking good!

Mine's 49ish to the top of the wing with 32" tires.

Not bad, but I know I want to be 1" to 2" lower.

Hey Lane,

I'm at 51" with fully inflated 40's! Better drop that biotch! :)

Buck,

I have always loved your D-90. You have really taken it a long ways. Keep up the good work and the innovation. I love to see extreme D-90's and you probably have the most extreme D-90 out there. You represent a very limited extreme rover community very well at events like King of the Hammers. Just wanted to say I like your D-90 and always have.

Russ

Thanks a ton man. That is a very nice thing to say for sure. I really appreciate it!

I like the bumperettes, will do something similar with my trailer, but in 2x3.

Coilovers are adjustable via an adjustment ring. Once you run out of that you can get softer springs, once you run out of that you have to relocate the upper or lower mount. They can actually be quite involved to get set up perfectly.

Exactly.. I have my adjusting ring all the way up, I think i can go a little softer on my primary spring if i had to, but i'm gonna wait til the cage is done to see where its at..

IM not looking forward to changing the height of my mounts! so im gonna avoid that at all cost.. i have it pretty much where i want it...

Loving this build too. Very rad truck and like the pics of the fabrication work. Not to mention you hustle on building this thing. It's taken me a few days just to figure out how how I want to put in jump seats never mind actually putting them in.

I'm guessing your ride time on the Santa Cruz Heckler has dropped a bit to get the 90 done :D I get easily side tracked with the kids and pump track on the side of the garage.

Unless you are keeping the alpine windows (or really don't like a ribbed roof), you should ask around and see if there are any series roofs available locally. I think they are the same dimensions and are usually cheap. Shipping would be a killer, but it wouldn't need any patching.

And they are shorter than D90 roofs, however, you could (should be able to) take the hump part of the series roof and use that to patch your roof. These roofs are pretty shoddily glued/riveted/welded together and are basically just a bunch of pieces.

OK new 14 inch 275 lb main coilover springs are on the way....

Im looking to get a little better ride, and adjustment out of the 275 compared to the 350. I have about 2 inches of slack at full droop to take up, so the softer rate will allow me to adjust the coilover down to make up the difference and still retain the same ride height..

Oddly enough it's easier to achieve this with the rear links that I want using a 90 as a base, stretch the frame 10" and the links 8 or so inches. Of course I'll also have no rear body apart from a trayback.. That makes it pretty easy.. Two seater only..

Yes, Dave ( buck on 40s) said when he triangulated his it made a huge difference yn the geometry. I guess it handled a ton better. So we will see

OK well my a arm extension is now done 2.5 square tube .25 wall.. So After i re drill my axle brackets, and burn them in all the way, the back is done underneath and ready for body work.. then its time to plumb the cell, mount the seats, build the belly skid, install my bling sway bar, and i should be out testin her...

Wow. Really nice fab work - looks so clean. I've been following the build on pirate as well and was shocked at the folded frame pics that buck posted. Never thought the rover frame was that thin. Makes sense to plate the mount areas.

Like Randy I'm very interested to see how that sway bar comes out.

OK more updates.. the new fuel cell is now Plumbed mostly... i still need to finish the lines at the pump, but that 5 minutes...

Anyways as you can see it think it came out extremely clean. I ran it through the inside bed rail support, so it out of the way and protected.

Also heres a pic of of where in gonna cut the fenders...

I like your routing of the lines, but you know you can't fit a tailgate without mods to now right? Just asking because someone I"ll leave nameless made a bottom mount for his trailer lid hinge in a similar location and forgot to take into account the tailgate clearance properly. But I know you are smarter than that. :grin

Can't wait to see it cut - then it'll "feel" stretched to me.

Oh and I love that a-arm extension!

OK heres some shots of the rear with the tailgate on, and with a 110 bench placed in the back, where in gonna put it for passengers in the rear..

Also heres some pictures of the plumping, I decided to reuse the factory filter, so this is how it looks...

Also the cut! heres the pics of the preliminary cuts i still have some touching up to make it look perfect, but heres a teaser...

I also cut it just short if the lights and cover so it can all be be hidden when the plastic light cover is on...

Its all just tacked, the lower arm supports need to be cut down, gussets need to be made, and there will be a cross support bar to the other one that goes through the tub and will also double as the rear seat harness mounts..

Coming along nicely. Is there any science to the angle of the coils?

mightymg
April 6th, 2010, 08:05 AM
YEah Im just not sure exactly what it is.. HA!

I just went off what Dave told me. They need to be angled forward for geometry, plus I didn't want to cut into the inside of the tub, so thats where they ended up fitting.. Also if you look at all the desert race trucks and buggies they are all angled forward to help absorb stuff better, and to add to travel IM sure they know what they are doing...

cgalpin
April 6th, 2010, 08:09 AM
Yeah I don't know anything about it but they just looked a bit more angled than you usually see. I guess test the full range of motion before burning it in and you should be fine.

mightymg
April 6th, 2010, 08:55 AM

OK back to some tech.....

The upper rear coil over mounts are now completely burned in..
and the drivers side is now trimmed as shown in pics...
Left to do on the rear is

Weld in the lower links
install my new longer upper brake line
fill coil overs with nitrogen
bolt on the rear shaft
install the buck wild racing sway bar
clean up the fenders
trim the rear cross member on the inside ( touches tire on full tuck)
gusset coil over mounts

Not bad I say not bad....

Question, in pic #4 the shock tabs are on the side of the shock... Wont that bind during articulation? Shouldn't it match the way the bottom mount is? Just curious....

mightymg
April 13th, 2010, 09:28 AM
With the heim mis alignement washers it gives me the perfect amount of movement not to bind on full tuck. I took my highlift and flexed it just the be sure...

With the spool and coil overs all the way around and the light spring rates, when i turn it force articulates it self and tends to have a decent amount of body roll on the street. This will massively control that..

these torsion bar style sway bars are designed to give maximum flex while still controlling roll on road. I took my high lift and did some drive way wheeling yesterday and fully flexed it out and I got 100 percent rear travel out of the rear...

But i could tell a huge increase driving it around my neighborhood.

So i have 2 options for sealing the small crack between my SW roof support and the doors.

Option one, weld a small piece of 1/2 wide 1/8 thick strap on the new bar i built, and use my doors seals

option 2, When i have my drop curtain made it will button on to the bars on each side, I can have the top over lap the bar on the door side about an inch, so when the door closes it touches the material and creates a seal..

Thoughts?

Thanks

Lane...

Is there a reason that you do not want to install the hardtop sides? I am having a hard time understanding why you would want just the roof and not the sides? I assume you will not have passengers in the back due to the fuel tank sitting there?

Have you thought about going with a UK style soft half cab? I know you already have your cage built but if you went with a canvas half cab you would get a bunch of that weight off and it would fit in tight areas better.

Not to mention it would give you a nice weather proof cabin.

They do not require the NAS cage and do not cost too much.

http://www.johncraddock-trim.co.uk/90-110-inch-truck-cab-hood-2611-0.html

If you want to keep a full roof you could always go with a UK spec full softtop

Canvas (not too expensive)
http://www.johncraddock-trim.co.uk/90-inch-full-hood-canvas-2584-0.html

Mohair (about 2x as much as the canvas)

These are actually really good ideas, and i had thought about that, It just seemed like it would be pricey to get the ROW roof bars, and the canvas.. I actually would love to have the half cab.

As far as sitting in the back ,I have a seat for back there, but it will only be back there when I have my girl with me, otherwise the seat will be out and the tonneau will be on. plus the aluminum SW top will act as a surrey in the summer.

The drop curtain will only be on when it rains, then in the winter ill run my van sides...

Mohair half cab $375 USD + shipping

Bikini gutter kit / hoop set $266 USD + shipping ( you would need a 2nd hoop for the truck cab but you have skills and could bend on out of conduit or tube)

http://www.johncraddock-trim.co.uk/90-inch-bikini-hood-stick-set-2490-0.html

Shipping the hoopset may add to the cost some, maybe keith could stick the hoops in the spare holes in his 90 when he ships it from the UK to save you shipping :)

FYI, I have a full hoopset and gutter kit here at my house if you want to look at it since you will only be about 10 miles from me next week.

OK more updates.. friday I got the plumbing all finished and cleaned up, I got the new gauges wired, I got my tonneau mounted, and I got my new Yukon grizzly yota locker installed in the rear.. She was driving amazing, I was so stoked to start driving her more.

Then Saturday i went over to fill her up with fuel, and when i got home i noticed there was gas leaking out of the back. Well the cell cracked along the side weld, so the new cell is on its way and will be here Tuesday.

Thursday I'm dropping it off at my buddies shop, and hes gonna shoot the front for me to color match it. HE has a paint booth, so i Don't have to do a garage job on her.

Also i got some patch panels to cover my alpine glass hole. they are the vertical corner pieces on semi truck trailers. The perfect curve for our roofs. Rivet it on and its done.

last week at the swap meet i found a fold up seat for 15 bucks that fits in the back PERFECT!!!!!!!! I have no idea what its out of, but it has the seat belts built in, it folds up.. great for kids...

Ill be out of town the week after next, but after that i should have some good pics...

Looks fantastic Lane. Love the green color with the white top. Classic color combo.

I think ARB's look good on Defenders. I just sold mine to get a Rockware but I did like the looks of the ARB - just wanted some more clearance (shouldn't be an issue for your rig) and I think Rockware's look pretty bitchin' too.

Are you going to put flares on? I think they would really complete the Defender look - although getting some to fit on the back might be hard.

I like that idea and think you could make it look like a nice clean stretch.

You could use a set of 110 3 door rear tub skins, they have enough blank area around the wheel well that you could set the wheel opening wherever you like and it would look nice and clean.

Drill out some spot welds, some rivets take out the old and install the new ones using some panel adhesive and pop rivets.

Not sure how much they would cost but the ones I have seen for 90’s were pretty cheap
