View Full Version : Dead Battery! And Random Stuff

I went out to start my 90 to go pick up some lunch and guess what, the battery is completely zapped. No lights nothing! Dawgnabit check it with the DVM and it goes flat line when I try to start. Apparently something was turned on by all this rain and it drained the battery. The battery is inside charging now, the problem well when I checked the voltage with the key in the off position the battery read 13 volts indicating no load, it only gets loaded when it's pouring rain out. Anyone want to guess what’s wrong? It's going to rain next week well see what causes this soon enough! Maybe this is incentive to get a dual battery setup going.

It's really slow today that’s why I'm posting this anyone who wants to post something completely irrelevant should! :grin

1 in ziplock bag

2 radio wet but worked on the way into work this AM

3 the fuse box was splahed wet

Maybe I'll start hosing stuff down until I see a current draw off the battery.
This could be fun:)

How about putting a roof on when it rains Mike? :grin

How about putting a roof on when it rains Mike? :grinNo way man! That’s how I keep it sort of clean inside! I had to ride in a coworker’s car, it was weird! It felt very closed in and quiet. I don't think I liked it; it was erie being able to hear and carry on a conversation.

Yes, no roof is the way to go 89mph on 87 and the turnpike for 4.5 hours, got to my sisters house and I could not here a word they were saying. LOL and I was cold, apparently even when it was 85, the windchill made it cold.

LOL Ron. Its even more fun for 12 hrs when temps go from 65 to 22 (a bit chilly but after an hour or 2 you stopp feeling as cold). I was only doing 75mph. For me the wind gets much worse at 80 mph, at 90 it becomes hard to see, and 95 mph well lets just say you shouldn't drive that fast without some kind of eye protection as you can hardly keep your eyes open.

I once went when it poured and I had a roof but no door tops but it was COLD, the dog and I fought over the blanket the whole trip (this was before I fixed the heater).

It's amazing how much airy the cabin is without those darn things! :)

Get out your voltmeter and start pulling fuses to look for the draw. Also, check the loom running along the bottom of the bulkhead, it gets ratty from mud and water and can short out pretty easily.

Good luck,

Tony

Hey Anthony, thanks, but the probmem only happened once, and only happened while it was raining real hard. I think the rain shorted a relay causing it to turn on. My bet is the electric fans as I just relocated the relays and haven't waterproofed them 100%. It still may be something else but I'll find out soon enough as more rain is in the forcast:( .

Could well be the fans -- I was thinking that the harness on the bulkhead is really susceptible to getting soaked, hence the short being there. I'll be in Manchester in a couple of weeks, if you want I can come by and take a fire hose to the truck . . . :)

Throw the voltmeter in the console just to be safe. Good Luck!

Well it hasn't happened to me again and it rained last night so go figure. Never happend before and I will just have to wait for it to happen again. Maybe I'll take it threw the water hole in PA again just to see what happens.

If the rain is hard enough or there is wind I get water in my dash and fuse box. It used to play havoc with my windsheild wipers, they would stop right when I needed them most. I traced the water to the seal between the windsheild frame and the bulkhead. I haven't fixed the seal yet, it's summer now, but I re-routed the flow of water away from my electrics. I figure it's a Land Rover, it'll never stop leaking so I'll just protect the stuff that shouldn't get wet.

Mike, how do you like those electric fans? Are they noisy, do they cool better than the viscs. fan? I like the idea of being able to switch them off.

Mike Hippert

Noisy yes, they make a bit of noise but it's only when your hood is open that your really hear it. I think they cool a ton bettter then an old clutch fan, but a new one, well I haven't tested that. I like being able to switch it on and off also, I also like all the room it gives you under the hood to work. It makes changing belts allot easier! Another plus is I can turn the fans on when the engine is off so I can cool the engine it its real hot.

Mike, did you notice any of the rumored power gain when you switched to electric fans? I could use a few more horses

I need to switch to electric fans that I can do that with as well. The one in our D90 sucks. We were starting to overheat wheeling on Sat and it was only in the mid 70's but I could tell the fan was not kicking on when the truck started heating up.
