I was looking over a site with a 2002 D-90 in the UK, and the owner reported, "I have now had the Defender gearing taken out and had it replaced with the silent Series II Discovery gearing (Ashcroft Transmissions)."

Does anyone know anything about that? Thoughts?

I looked around at http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/ and the only thing I can think is it had a manual in it and they put an auto in it?

TDi and TD5(I believe) have 1.4 t-cases, DIIs have 1.2 t-cases. That is probably what it means

Hmm odd, I have the 1.4 T-case and I don't think it's noisier. Do they/you(Ron) mean the engine will be quieter because it's running at a lower RPM?

Mike you got the 1.4 for the 35" so you wouldnt have to re-gear? I thought the NAS came with the 1.2

LT230Qs and SEs have "quiet" gears with more teeth. Not sure if 1.4 has that too. I was not really addressing the "quiet" issue as what they meant by disco II gears.

Certainly lower rpms is quieter--in an open top D90 I doubt highly you can tell (I sure could not!)

Yep! Well sort of, I kind of broke some gears in the 1.2 that came with my 90 so I put a 1.4 in to help compensate for the 35s

And nope I didn't hear that much differance either Ron.

I think they are loud regardless, the disco is prolly quieter cause of all the padding and carpet and luxo stuff?
