View Full Version : Clicking in tranny when downshifting from 5th to 4th

I have this clicking sound like if you were to bang two metal pencils together. It happens every time I downshift from 5th to 4th... also seems like there is some resistance now when trying to put it in gear in 4th.


Am I in trouble?

is this an r380? is it the locking dog thing that keeps you from going straight into reverse from 5th?

is this an r380? is it the locking dog thing that keeps you from going straight into reverse from 5th?Yes, it's an R380 - not sure of the suffix (Truck is a 1994 ST, #CDN-80). was planning on getting under it tonight and scraping the waxoyl off the casing and seeing if I could find a replacement unit or a rebuilder locally?

Does anyone have any insight if a generic tranny rebuilder can get into one of these and fix it? Or do I need a Rover specialist? I'm pretty good and keeping the truck in good repair, but when it comes to something inside the engine or in the drivetrain, I leave it to the professionals.

sounds like there might not really be a problem. try shifting slower. what oil are you using?

My R380 has been making that clicking noise when going from 5th to 4th for at least 10 years and it has not caused any other issues or tranny failure FWIW. I have about 80K miles on the truck/tranny. I am running Red Line MTL. YMMV

Yup, that's the "don't shift from 5th to reverse" lock releasing.
