Clunk Clunk Clunk front wheel

Driving to work today in the 110 and I hit a small bump in the road. After that the slightest bump i n the road sounds like my passenger side front wheel is going to fly off. Sounds like my spring is broken in half. Seems to drive okay and I am about to do the suspension anyway. Any ideas what to look for?

Will it be obvious?I would first get under there to see if its anything obvious (broken shock mount etc) If everything looks alright after a visual inspection your going to have to take the hub apart. Good time to check the wheel bearings as well. Good luck. A bad cv joint usually is a clicking noise especially when turning. Jack up the entire axle and try to spin it by hand and see if you hear the same noise.

Ah I just used needle nose pliers. Are snap ring better. I was just in sears.

I have new shocks, springs, securing rings and bolts on the way.

Is it a constant clunk when rolling or only when you hit a bump or what not? So you just redid the bearings? So probably not that. Sounds like a shock mount or something suspension related. How long ago did you redo the bearings?

bearings were about 4 to 5 months ago. Just that wheel. Only when I hit a bump.

If it is only when you hit a bump I highly doubt it was a CV. I would say suspension and maybe bearings but I doubt it also. Jack the truck up and wiggle the wheel. If it feels loose then it is probably hub related. I assume you tightened the lug nuts!!!!

umm, not to sound like a total ass but have you checked the lugs? This happened to a guy I know..

Poke around under there and tug and pull on things. Grab the top of the wheel and push/pull violently. If nothing looks amiss visually I am sure you can drive home safely. But it sounds like you need to stop abusing this truck Barry - driving on roads with small bumps and all!

Well I know it's not the lugs as I just had the wheels balanced and watched the lugs get put on with an impact gun. Anyway, I go outside and look around and grab the front shock and it is totally loose. Only tight on the top. Just rattling around in the spring. Look around some more, the bottom nut is missing. So the shock is only being held on at the top. This is a funny coincidence since I ordered new shocks and springs anyway. Now don't blame me for the nut falling off. I haven't done a thing to the suspension yet. Who puts ranchos on a land rover anyway!!!!

IS there a bottom shock mount to break or is the bolt all it is? It moves around a bit but the threads still come through the bottom mount hole. I would think the expansion of the shock would hold it in place

No the springs expand and contract much faster than the shock will on it's own. You should be able to get a washer and locknut for it at the hardware store to tide you over until you replace them.

There is suppost to be bushings and washers clamped down by the threaded shaft on the shock and the lower spring mount that holds it all down on the lower mount.

True - you have probably lost the lower bushing along with the nut and washer.

Actually the bushing is still on it. So weird this happened after I ordered shocks. I was just doing the shocks and springs in an OCD fit not thinking i really needed them. I just parked it and took the other truck. The beauty of two defenders. The new shocks will come with these replacement bushings I assume.
