She is a 95. Has 74000 miles on her but for what ever reason had quite a bit of rust. I think it was salt on the roads from back east.

Tetanus is her name and she has quickly became a part of our family. Acually after much soul searching I had decided to sell her. It did not feel right but if felt like what I should do. I have three teenage children soon to go to college. I could not find anyone local to fix her and I simply don't have the room, knowledge or time to do such a big project. However my children, wife and my father rallied around the two of us and wanted to see if we could make it work and keep her. I'll spare you all the drama, but it was touching and proved once again that I am blessed.

Along the way came Dale Knepp and Steve Peters. These two have been instrumantal in getting this project started and moving along in a postive direction. I can't say thanks to the both of them enough. They have taken the time to answer all my questions and calm my fears.

I drive an 88 Izuzu Trooper with 242000 thousand on it and it runs on three cylinders, sort of. Tet is going to be my new daily driver. On the day I drove it to work to have the shipping company pick her up it was pouring down rain and I had five kids plus all their school gear packed in her. Maybe not a trip across the Sergenti but an adventure none the less. I look forward to many more.

Michael

P. S. I should also say a thanks to the D-90 folks, almost all of your comments earlier were very helpful. The others were funny.

Oh that's right, I remember Tet now. It made me feel much better about Janey's frame problem after seeing those shots of hers :grin

Looking forward to seeing the progress!

10.5 hours and the body is off.

As expected the floor board bolts all required a grinder and the firewall through bolts needed the proper application of heat.

She will need a new radiator, brake lines, fuel lines and a fuel pump (which explains the leaking fuel). This is the first time I have seen the top of the pump completely trashed.

More to follow. Will be posting a complete parts list as a reference, amazing what other things require attention when doing a frame swap. Some parts could have lasted another year but since the body is off seems proper to take care of whats needed now.

So far
Fuel Pump
Radiator
New Right Capping
(would suggest the left also)
Fuel Lines
Radiator
Few connectors for lights
bushings
Floor pans
Brake Lines

Awesome

Peter/Michael, I could use the old cappings for my trailer project if you have any interest in selling them cheap.

thanks,
charles

It is amazing what has to go that you thought was fine (even good).

I have never been involved in a frame swap "with a budget" at least not one that ended that way.

Good luck. If anyone can do it, you are probably the man for the job.

Charles you are welcome to them if Steve does not want them. I have no use for them. Contact Steve and see what he says.

Or you can have the ones off my 110 if those suit you better.

Thanks for posting pictures Steve. Considering that you got the truck Thursday night you have made quite a bit of progress. I guess the conditions of the fuel pump explains why there was fuel shooting out the back end when I drove it.

So far the only big surprise has been the radiator. I knew there was a leak at the fuel tank just not sure where. I guess the fact that it is the sending unit is a bit of a suprise.

That big hole in the footwell area explains why my left foot was soaking wet when I drove her to work on Monday.

Thanks again,
Michael

That would be awesome Jim, especially if your corner pieces are better than his (I'll be using them to finish off the front edge and the corner pieces would be useful and well as needing about 64" across the front). Let me know what you want for them shipped to me.

LOL. This one is actually a freebee. It would have gone at some point anyway if it wasn't bad now. So your killing 2 birds with one stone and it's easy to replace now.

Sorry for the semi hijack.

x2, the truck really isn't that rusty.... seriously. Good Luck with the build/budget. :)

Gunmaker
November 4th, 2009, 07:54 AM
Yes it is a bit crazy the way the rust is scattered. There are parts under her that look like they just came off the show room floor and then that same part will be covered in rust at the edges. The frame is a perfect example. On the drivers side if you were to look at it everything is fine go to the passenger side and you could stick your fist in the frame in several spots. But the interior is pretty good, a little water damage and some rust and the engine seems in great shape just needs new gaskets to stop the leaking, I hope at least.

Cut the frame and what not this week. Refreshing the axles and associated parts.

Expect the frame to arrive this week coming.

Adding new doors and hinges all the way around. Waiting on the new cappings so we can head to the paint shop.

Ordered a new radiator, fuel lines on the way as are various bits such as new bushings and other bits to make her nearly as good as new.

Almost finished welding and patching the frame. Had to plate in several areas. Once back on all 4 gonna start bolting the old girl back together. Working on small incrfements to keep the cost low.

Just putting in new valve gaskets, oil pan gasket and where ever else it is leaking from.also putting in new main seals. I don't think the main seals are not leaking but we figured that while Steve had the engine out we might as well replace them.

Which reminds me does anyone have a good solution for removing oil and rust stains on concrete. It looks like the Exon Valdez docked on my drive.

As usual good work Stephen and Ash. It'll be cool to see the progress the next time I come up that way. All I can say is I'm glad my/Safari Rover's 90 is sitting in my driveway not the shop, despite making the shop look good, heh.

To the Owner, expect it to take more time any money than you anticipated, but it is worth every penny and every minute. You took it to the right place to have the work done, I really cannot say enough about the work Stephen and Ash do.

PS: Don't forget the fender washers...

Josh, Thanks for asking. I love her. She is my daily driver and the engine is running well. It is wonderful to have a car that makes you smile everytime you climb in. I have been meaning to post some pictures but I am so slow at all this computer stuff and busy with work that I just have not done it. I did post some vids on YouTube of SCARR so that my grand father could see. Nothing crazy but great fun none the less. My whole family went and we had a GREAT time.

I suppose typical of rover, but she has started to leak. Oil and water. Much of it came after SCARR. Maybe I was harder on her than I thought. A little out of the bottom of the engine and now three of the four axels drip. She only leaks water when it rains. :) It did not leak water or oil out the axels until after SCARR So who knows. I need to get a new rear bumber as I still have the old one and it is rusty and after the rock I hit it now has a large hole in it. also want to get some armor for underneath as right now she has none and I am just living on the edge. Other work still needs to be done as this was done on a budget and so had to leave the little stuff for later. Got a SD roof rack on her and that is great to have. She looks great driving down the road all loaded up with our camping gear on the roof and the inside filled with family. Truly a joy.

Steven and Ash did a fantastic job and Steven treated me more than fair. And just between you and me he was really patient with all my crazy questions and dumb ideas.

The two vids I posted are below.

Take Care,
Michael
