For those who have built their trucks or done extensive refurbishment/rebuilding. How have you gotten the vehicle appraised for an accurate insurance value?

Who did you use, etc?

My insurer was less than helpful by suggesting I needed it 3rd party appraised, but didn't recommend anyone in particular. I would rather find someone that has some experience with expedition-type vehicles....

I have the same questions. I just bought a 1984 110 that has a lot of newer parts and will soon have a 300 Tdi. I need to get it insured. But my usual company (USAA) will only insure it for the market (blue book) value.

Any suggestions on getting it insured and/or appraised?

I wrote a letter to my insurance guy and attached copies of receipts for all the work done. If you did it yourself you can attach the parts sales receipts. I ended up doing a "stated value" insurance policy, so my justification for the value was acceptable.

And what is that? Since it's not in the KBB. I have never had any insurance luck with my grey market truck. Even NADA had no effect. Good luck.

I'm with Allstate...I've always had to do stated value. Now with the '95 and even on the '97 when it new(ish)

Yeah, Allstate told me that it's KBB or stated value if I want to.. I need to sit down one day and get together print outs/receipts for all my modifications and do stated value.. especially for my d2, the mods are worth more than the truck is now.

My 83 is with Allstate. They called ahead and spoke to an underwriter and were told ok. When the policy came in to be underwritten they got a different underwriter who chastised the agent for tricking the computer system (some vin trick) and was indicating she didn't want to insure it, but the policy got issued. As Buck indicated grey market trucks with non-Us conforming Vin numbers are a bit of a problem.

I just bought the thing (it's actually a 1984, not a 1994) and it hasn't even arrived in CA yet. It's supposed to be shipped out here sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I know it's likely to be an uphill battle getting it registered in CA, but where there's a will, there's a way. I've done the research, heard the horror stories, and just decided to pull the trigger finally. I've been thinking about how to get a diesel land rover or land cruiser in CA for about three years. I know the potential pitfalls. Maybe I'll get lucky when it comes time to register it. Maybe I won't. Got my fingers crossed . . .
