4-5k will buy you A LOT of rover V8.

2800 for 4.6 short block, 1200 if you want to stay 4.0 (both will fit in place of a 3.9)

400 to redo heads

60 for a 4.2 chip

300 for a cam

300 for gaskets and bolts.

As far as the trans, if the mainshaft is ok you will be fine with new synchro balk rings (50) and maybe a synchro hub (200) if second is really bad. Maybe $50 for input and output seals and a tube of right stuff.

ron where do you get these prices from. the places i checked wanted about $4 or $5 just for the 4.6 short block. which is crazy by the way

Those are prices that I used to sell them for as a dealer (main line). I would have to check on the 4.6 (which I am sure would be within a couple hundred bucks) but the 4.0 price is still good.

GEMS 4.6 short block is the cheaper one, and Bosch DII 4.0 is really cheap.

The bolts you can go aftermarket as well as the cam, everything else I would go genuine. head work any machine shop can do. Skim 10 thou (or not your choice), valve job, new seals.

New, genuine, in crate.

I am in school at the moment. Ring the dealer and ask for Scotty. Tell him I reffered you. For the 4.6 tell him to look it up for a 96-98 4.6 HSE range rover.

You can send me an email directly, I have a couple other ideas too.

i'll check on it tomorrow & let you know something.

if i do the 4.6 im guessing i need new front cover and water pump, new oil pan? what else would i need or what could not switch over from the 3.9

Oil pan, front cover, etc all fit from the 3.9 (you MAY need to clearance the pan 1/8in to allow for the one rod bolt but this is a maybe, and you don't have a choice as 4.6 oil pan will not work.)

A 3.9 cam will work, 4.2 is better, aftermarket is nice, well in reality a 3.9 cam will be fine for torque which is what you want so I might save my money if my cam was good.

The other thing you need is a crank pulley spacer (grind the teeth off of a timing gear (at 145 I would recomend replacing both gears and chain with edelbrock or genuine) so you can use your old one.

The final bit is the tricky part, and that is you need to do the cam update if it is not done on your truck. Also if the update was not done and you do not update to a cam plate type cam you need to plug those two holes or else you lose oil pressure.

It is not hard you just have to know what you are doing and what you are looking at (compare to old will work fine).

Chip the ECU (I hear a 4.2 RRC chip works but I have not seen it done in a D90 only in Disco/RRC).
