View Full Version : 300 TDi EVO kits, Group buy.

What the heck is that you ask?
All the parts required to upgrade your 300Tdi to the turbos system on the 2.8 Powerstroke.
Including Turbo, exhaust manifold, plumbing, piping and other goodies. You install it and have the exhaust shop connect the downpipe to your exhaust.
The way I understand it a 300 TDi without turbo lag is an amazing thing!
The cost of the kit will run around $2025 depending on the exchange rate (UK pounds). Not making any $$$ on this, I figured it was just too cool not to share.
My friend in Europe that will be arranging this will need cash up front as he is poor and owns a Land Rover...

I'm still in the honeymoon phase of my Tdi relationship. Its so much better than the 2.25 I traded up from that I don't think I'll be looking for a sleeker model for quite some time.
But thanks for including us, sounds like a great mod.

You want two on your truck John?
These are standard product available in the Uk currently, I'm hoping that if we get enough to bring in a crateful we can save some on shipping and perhaps the duties..

Is this the kit that Allard sells? A lot cheaper than a 2.8 with similar numbers...
diesel_jim
December 15th, 2009, 03:18 AM
I have a similar turbo (VGT) on my Td5... pulls lovely, just like a "modern" turbo diesel engine. (although mine's chipped to 190bhp too which helps!)
but that turbo makes driving "nice" and smooth.
revor
December 15th, 2009, 09:36 AM
It's not the Allard kit but it is the same idea. This kit takes the parts directly from the 2.8 PS motor the way MWM designed it.

What type of power are you talking about?
Cube II
December 16th, 2009, 09:09 AM
Maximum power
standard: 111 bhp @ 4000 rpm - "Evo": 117 bhp @ 4000 rpm
Maximum torque
standard: 195 lbf ft @ 1800 rpm - "Evo": 224 lbf ft @ 1400 rpm

15% increase in torque at 22% lower RPM. Ho Ho Ho.
$2,000 plus installation. Hmmmm
How soon do you need to know, Keith?

You can always increase fueling to get much higher power and torque numbers. The numbers above are with the turbo change by itself.
The real difference is the usable power band increase, which is a night and day difference in driveability. If you've ever driven a VGT, you'll know what I mean. No more turbo lag. No more revving it way up to make sure you don't shift it below the turbo boost point.

If I did my homeworks correctly, the torque would be more or less equal to a Td5 but...@1400 rpm.
Sounds more than enough for me.
Add an improved intercooler one day (some may already have one) and tune the pump as per Red90 suggestion, and there you go...

You get a VNT of course :naughty

And the exaust.

I have a basic stock setup, with stock intercooler and hoses. Just wanted to make sure I would be taking out the stock stuff - putting in the new stuff - and I'm done. No sourcing other parts from UK that didn't come in the kit. Are there any photos of this in a defender 300tdi that I can look at?

Indeed it may be worth it to look into it again. I looked into it, while the quality of what could be had was excellent we tryed to work things out through Brazil or Argentina a year ago and a complete kit was actually more than I could pick up the parts here in the States.

Cool!
Michele, if you are able to source or obtain a VNT variable geometry actuator (it pushes on the variable geometry lever and has a hose that is hooked to manifold pressure, looks like a small can wiht a hose coming out of it) I could use one for my very own VGT project... No big deal, but if you are dealing with parts houses that deal in these parts maybe you could ask? I would really appreciate it.
Yah it's for Brutus :)

Hey Art,
Getting the numbers up helps with the price, we can probably get another buy going in the future. I'm not even included in this buy as I can't afford it currently. But I'll likely need two kits in the coming months that will put us a coulpe away from 5 kits if you go in. (5 is a magic number.)

I hear ya...I've been waffling on purchasing a "real" car for the last month and was looking into a BMW 1991 M5. Then I realized that the last thing I need is a money pit just to feel good driving fast.
My Rovers have been essentially trouble free. Although I'd love for the 110 to be peppier with this kit, in the end I want an automatic in it. So, now I'm thinking moving the Tdi/R380 into the 90 and the ZF into the 110 - not with the 4.0. :) Think Chevy.
Assuming the 90 is much lighter than the 110, I'm hoping not to need the 2.8 turbo kit in it. It will also allow me to avoid MA emissions testing on the 90.

I have wired the $$ today and the kits will ship next week. That should put them here the week of 4/1.
Once I get them I'll turn them as quickly as I can.
Hopefully the following weekend I can get mine installed so that I can check any unforseen problems.
We have installed on kit in Italy and it went well. Michele is thrilled (he want's to go race Ferarri's now). There are some points he noted during his install and I will write these up and either post them on D-90 or include the notes with the kits. Or do both.

As I wrote today before being interrupted...
...the D90 used as test mule had the VE pump set more aggressively than mine (weekend warrior),
straight air intake (with foam filter) and custom injectors nozzles.
The dyno chart reported 167HP (IIRC), then the fuel pump had was de-tuned a bit :rolleyes 'cos the truck was - accordingly to my mate - hard to control, it kept digging :)
Temperature within limits!
I should get more details, like the dyno chart.
Sincerely that sounds too much to my taste, so I preferred a more "conservative" setup.

revor
July 12th, 2010, 11:31 AM
I don't see why it wouldn't, but there are individuals on this board that know more about the 200 that could answer the question better.
Of course if that is the case then there should also be a few extra 300 turbo's and manifolds out there for dropping a Disco 200 into a LHD Defender.
Wolf Fabrication
July 12th, 2010, 11:38 AM
I've got a Disco 200tdi right now and my understanding is that I need to change my intake anyway to do a LHD conversion.
revor
July 12th, 2010, 11:42 AM
I can't say that for sure the 300 manifold will fit directly on because I've never done it. The bolt pattern on the head looks to be the same and it doesn't seem that there would be much in the way on the 200 to obstruct the 300 manifold.
I do know that a Disco 200 turdo leaves you with no room for a steering shaft on a LHD Defender.
That said I have a 300 Manifold and down pipe in good condition for sale:)

I may be interested, what about the turbo itself? It may worth it to test fit your bits just to make sure the kit will bolt up. I want to eventually do a LHD conversion, so this might help that along.

July 13th, 2010, 09:20 PM
I have a 300TDI turbo and manifold installed on my disco 200tdi, so i could do the LHD conversion. The outlet of the turbo is still very close to the steering column because of how far back the 200 sits, but it does fit. It bolted right on, but I think i may have had to enlarge one hole on the 300 manifold, but it was more of a Land Rover tolerance thing. I can take pictures if anyone wants them.

Looks like there are no more 'group buys', and I can't justify the cost of paying ~$2600 for a kit shipped from the UK. Does anyone have a parts list for the EVO kit? Really, it seems to me the key components are:
1) the VNT
2) the exhaust manifold
Everything else looks like fairly simple plumbing.
* I can source VN Turbos from SA or China but I need a P/N/model #.
* I don't have a source on the exhaust manifold yet... I need one... worst case, there is a manufacturer who does one-off castings for a couple hundred dollars in the LA area. of course I'd need to machine the thing... but I have some contacts for that. If someone has a not-yet-installed 2.8PS and would lend out the exhaust manifold to make a pattern that would be great :-D
I could see the turbo + manifold it for under $1K.. and plumbing should be easy enough to fabricate up. This I could justify....
