I checked the fluid level in my swivel balls by using a zip tie as a dipstick with markings at 3" and 6.5". I inserted the zip tie via the fill plug up to the 6.5" mark and the lube level is at 3" on each side. Does this sound like I have enough lube in there? BTW, when I bought the truck, I replaced all the fluids, including the swivel balls with one tube of One Shot for each side. What do you guys think? Should I add more, is it possible to overfill?

Cheers...

Sounds perfect. Some swivels had a small check level screw (mine do) and thats about wehre it is. I can take a photo if you'd like.

Kevin,

A picture would be great!

FlaD90,

Use LR One-Shot grease (comes in a plastic tube, almost list toothpast), one tube in each swivel ball. This can be bought at the LR Dealership.

I measured the approx. distance between the drain and check plug and it's right about 3". The check plug is the small 1/4" square head just below the steering stop bolt head.

Yours should have a level plug as Kevin says. I think only a few of the 1997s (if any) had the balls without the level plug.

Not sure when the change occured, but my 97 #1008 doesn't have them.

I think I've heard some people recommend draining the swivel balls of fluid and replacing with grease to avoid potential problems with leaking out all of the fluid. Does anyone know about this, have any thoughts, recommendations. I have a '84 d-90 and this is the only fluid I have not tackled/replaced since buying my truck... mainly, because I haven't done it before and am uncertain about how straightforward or complicated the task is. Any advice would be appreciated.
