View Full Version : What brakes do I have(axles too)?

I have a '84 d-90 200 tdi. All is well and I know or am familiar with most of the truck's parts(ie which trans, transfer case, filters, etc. the vehicle has). But, the truck was imported from the UK and it has disc brakes, front and rear(I imagine it did not come originally with rear discs). I am hoping that someone can tell me an easy(or not so easy) way to determine what brakes are on the truck. The axles are defender and one of the service receipts mentions an upgraded or replacement rear axle. I don't need brakes yet, but, I'd like to know what I'll need before I am confronting the need for new brakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post some pics, so we can get a better idea. A picture of the hubs would be helpful too. If someone went to all the trouble of putting discs on the rear, I would guess they did not leave the 10 spline axles.

they should also have a number on the top of the tubes.

Dave,
Pardon my ignorance, but, do you mean the tube part of the axle?
Mike
Scott,
I will try to post pics this weekend, if the weather isn't too cold for this New York sissy!

Yes, on top of the axle tube.

The number on the tube will only tell you about the tube, everything else can be and could have been switched out. I know I had a 10 spline RRC classic rear axle, then swapped to ABS stubs and hubs with a 24 spline Detroit 3rd, then eventually changed to an ARB locker, then swapped out the rusty axle housing for a Disco 1 housing.

That is certainly true.

True about the number but that along with the picture will tell the story. Many UK imports will not have the axle altered from original.

Except, the OP's truck obviously is altered.... Disc brakes on a 1984. Most likely, it has a Disco or RR classic rear axle.

What I found was most will swap a complete axle and not inter mix the parts.

There are really one type of rear pads that go on a rear disc D90/RRC/Disco1, and one type of front pad that go on a Defender but another type of front pad that go on a Disco and yet another that go on some RRC's.
There are two different calipers that can go on the rear of RRC/Disco1/D90 early caliper will be held on with Imperial threads the later and proper to a 90 will be held on with a fine metric thread.
The fronts, I'd have to see a pic of the caliper.
Pictures of the drive flanges can also help with identification.

Thanks for the helpful info guys. Just as I was getting to remove the wheels and take pix for some help identifying my brakes, I was lucky enough to get in touch with the previous owner in the UK. He informed me that my 1984 d-90 has standard d-90 disks in the front and the rear axle was switched out for a range rover classic, including the standard discs on those axles.
Thanks for all the advice,
Mike
