I pulled the left front wing off for Gustavo last night (my Pearls Pond damage). I have the rear doors to reassemble. This truck is going to be neat in Beluga with 4 rollup window doors, new style roof sides, and new interior trims.

Gery,

I know Shrek was/is kind of good looking, but since he is getting new ( to me ) doors, panels and a wing ( well it's almost 50% of the truck ) I've figured, WTH, lets do it even nicer ...

the goal. Beluga/Alpine top, Roll Cage ( then a NAS Basket or similar ) and undecided if I will use White or Black Nato ( currently black )

opinions, pics of similar always appreciated

You're gonna have to change its name from Shreck to the Orca. And you could paint a whale tail on the back (take that how you like) or add a large dorsal fin :grin

Barry,

I guess, but all my Rovers were Beluga, and after a nice day playing, all pinstripes came out.

And for ding. dents, etc.. I think they look very CHARACTER APPEAL.. not sure how much more issues than the current Trident color.. I think whatever will show on the Beluga will show on the Trident as well.

I think it will be one SEXY truck in that combo ( can't wait till it is done )

I was hoping you'd switch over to those black steel wheels- that's going to look bad azz!!!

Instead of alpine white for the top, check out Limestone (Series color)- it's a creamy off-white but is LR correct; would offset that black really well. I just powder coated a set of 130 steel wheels for my 90 & they look great.

Jay,

I've swapped the wheels the first week I've got it.
The pic on the avatar is ON LOAN from Doug, until the truck is done.
Currently has a limestone color , but not fan of it, I thought the Alpine White will contrast great with the PP Cage. But not shooting it down until the Black is on, ( I believe my friends will paint the roof afterwards so I get an idea of how limestone would look.

I am on the fence with a light tint ( windows ) on the Tub area, Alpines and rear doors, but no worries until it is back together

No problem consuming the stuff by the gallon, really at any temperature, ice cold or "sitting out on the counter for 3 hours." It actually is not very high in alcohol content and in the right mood goes down like water. Yumm, wish I had one right now.

If you bring it stripped down probably $4,500.00
I know materials ( Paint, Reducer, Hardener, Clear Coats - 2 kinds - , primer, tape, paper, sand paper, miscellaneous BS ) were close to $ 1,800.

So by doing the paint yourself maybe save $ 2,500.00

The P&PCage and the SD are almost identical. Also, it sits on top of the panel ( no need for cut out ), it is taller than the SD so it will easily clear the Ribs.

Nooooo, Gustavo!...I'd say ditch the cage too and keep it old school. If you really have to "modernize" it, I'd say at most a front hoop and the rest should be an internal cage a la Camel Trophy. I say keep the cages for the NAS trucks...also show off that white roof and don't cover it up with a cage!

Thanks. It had the black wheels ( powder coated black ) and I like the look of the Chawton wheels matching the roof.

BTW, paint the wheels ( professionally done with several coats of paint and several of clear ) probably 500.00 and matching Frank.

After is done, and the cage on , I might do the wheels Beluga, but I think it looks RARE *LMAO*, seriously looks different

the 45 inches of snow in the past week has impacted the restoration. I special ordered some parts from RN that showed as NLA with my UK sources (door strikers) for second row doors with roll up windows and lift up handles-only used in 84-85. I haven't had mail delivered in a week. Not sure how backed up UPS is.

I vote for black wheels, white makes the wheels look a bit out of place, especially with all the black diamond plate. I do think the black cage on the white roof is going to look awesome. Are you going to put a basket and or rack on it too?

I think I liked the white wheels better on it as well but everything else on that build kicks ass. It's going to look sick with the cage on. Can't wait to see what it looks like in action on the trail. Very nice job

Sounds like you are busy as heck getting her done but if you have a chance I'd be curious what the build sheet is - like the axles and suspension.

jaygoss
April 2nd, 2010, 09:38 AM
If you changed out to 4:10's/4:11's you're going to like the way it drives. I was considering a 4.6 but my friend (and a few folks here) talked me into the re-gearing w/heavy duty axles (from Rovertrax) and it drives great; not going to upgrade the motor and I'm a lot more confident with regards to reliability on the trail. I painted the hub flanges flat black and I think they look pretty good...but my wheels are Limestone.

Rugbier
April 2nd, 2010, 11:02 AM
Don,

I thought so, but after I painted them beluga, I like it better.
When I am done will put the grocery list and pics of her in action will be ( hopefully someone takes pics as I always wheel alone ) after the trip end of April.

Some of the items are:

Qt Radius Arms 3 degrees
QT Rear links
OME 2" HD Springs
Terrafirma Turret Rings
Blingstein ( will change but unknown yet )
Equipe Turrets or in lack of Terrafirma
Polybushing ( Orange )
QT Panhard
QT portal Drag
( will do the cones after the trip when I lowered the rear shock mounts )
And if True Trac is fitted HD axels/CV from Keith will be fitted as well

Jay,

I have stock gears and drives awesome, only downfall is downshifting out of 5th on a long steep hill, but I did that on the 90 as well.
I kind of like the color of the flanges as my Turrets, radius arms, rear links, Portal Drag link, Panhard rod and diff guards are that colour, so I bling all around ( like Rico with the Gold Teeth *LOL* )

Currently has a Detroit SL on the rear Salisbury, will put a True Trac in front , but I doubt it will be done before the trip

April 4th, 2010, 11:32 AM
Thanks for the pats spec Gustavo. It sure is a nice looking rig. I'm sure the beluga black on the rims looks treats in person too and having them repainted will most likely keep them shinier and better looking than the stock black paint (like on my Wolf rims).

Don,

Those wheels have 5 coats of paint ( beluga ) and 4 of clear....

needed to sand the Chawton off as when applying the Clear it would lift.

The Powder color of the nato is nice but don't last long and make the wheels look dull

I think the CHawton Wheels made oldie classy look and the beluga gives the mean ready for business look

April 7th, 2010, 08:15 AM
I saw Gustavo's rig yesterday and it bears little resemblance to the truck I sold him in November. You guys should push for more pictures....

He's made a lot of custom mods to Equipe parts to make them fit with the existing accesories. He's gone through some frustrating times but the end result is awesome. He's also been quite generous giving his cast off parts to my son for his 110.

I wouldn't change the gearing. with the Tdi, tweaked injection pump, full width intercooler, and 1.4 transfer case, the gearing is perfect for the 33's. Truck will run over 80 mph and is comfortable cruising @ 75 and is fairly quick from a light for what it is.

Why not powder coat? Just curious as I am debating on my Disco wheels to paint or PC. Concerned about the winter roads here and durability.

Powdercoating can't be touched up, painted rims on the other hand can.

I have run a MB with painted rims thoughout the northeast winter with painted rims, they look as the day they were painted 3 years ago.

If painted the right way, they last forever ( several coats of paint and several of Clear coat - most paintshops do 1 or 2 - but I have some pull with the painter " ME " )

Wow - 5 coats of paint and 4 clear?! Maybe overkill like those shops you were talking about but I think not :) Must give them a good deep look and probably durable as a brick.

My 90's wheel look dull. I've used wheel polish and they look decent for a bit but once some mud gets on them they go back to the dull easily.

Don,
Thanks

Well the place I am doing all the work at ( and they did the whole painting of the 110 ) are friends that used to restore / repair high end exotics, so they are ANAL to say the least ( Doug has wittnessed it ) they tear me a new one everytime I say, screw that tiny dent, looks good to me, but not to them, when I did the 109, 1/4 of the tub was pushed in and they worked it old fashion ( heat & hammer ) and made it look brand new.

So when they told me, ( and I painted the wheels myself - with their guidance ) put 5 coats / 4 coats so if you scratch them will be fine..I did .

[QUOTE=Rugbier;215904]Michael,

That what I was going to do ( as soon as she arrives home ) no sense on me getting it now ( unless it is on the way ).

And again ..that was awesome of your Dad..to bring it down

Just paying it forward, I have someone helping me with an ARB. :)

Not a problem at all I will tuck it in the back of the garage. Let me know when she arrives.
Of course traditional Gustavo holding fees applies.:grin

Charles I might, I am having a small issue ( similar to the one at Rousch Creek ) , I can't keep it straight on the hwy over 35mph, my steering has a dead wobble of almost a 1/4 turn.

I know Trevor and Jarek did some tighten of the steering arm, I might attempt the same.
I can get any idiots around me to do an alignment ( and for the life of me I can do it ).

Wanna come to Towson MD? *LOL*

When it's sitting stationary, can you move the steering wheel that much?

Rugbier
April 14th, 2010, 02:59 PM
no , when I am driving

I'm no expert but it sounds like a balancing or alignment issue to me if you don't feel any play while sitting still. Does it smooth out at higher speeds?

Balancing is good.

Alignment was great before I park it.

My guess is flat spoted tires from months of sitting. You didn't touch the steering so why you would now have play is a mystery.

Did you check/adjust swivel preload?

TDI Guy

also check your tire pressure. I had this problem last year to find that the tires were just really low.. Put air in and got them back to 34lbs and all was perfect again...

Found the mistery
When we did the Diff Guard, we removed the track rod, then we put it back in place and got derailed to other things , we forgot to tighten the damn thing.

Thanks for all the answers

LOL. I was about to tell you to check all the bolts since I know you made suspension changes.

You guys have me worried. Why don't you borrow Janey for your trip, and Wolf can ride shotgun. I'd feel much better about things.

It's okay Goose, I miss the "cute blue one" (my wife's words by the way). I have cautioned my wife and son to never use the words "cute" and "Land Rover" in the same sentence ever again.

What is the axle setup on there and does it have wheel spacers? It looks like it's got a wider stance.

RRC front axle, Salisbury disc brake rear ( both 24 splines ) and yes I have 30mm spacers front and rear ( awesome turning radius )
