frustration sets in!!!!!new door tops

I am trying to remove my old door tops and cant make headway. i finally figured out it is an 11/16th socket but the damn NUT just spins and spins. i havent removed the door card cuz i dont want to unless i have to. anyone had issue with this? does wd40 work if i spray the threads? i thought this would take 10 minutes. uuuggghhhh!

I let mine soak in that PB Blaster stuff for a night and then they came off.

They are threaded into the door top itself too. Odds are you are spinning it inside the doortop. Keep undoing them while lifting up on the doortop and the doortop should separate from the studs. Then hammer the studs through the bottom of the door and then cut the nuts off with a dremel and buy new nuts. Then thread back in the door top.

Since yours are actually spinning (most of the time the stud seizes in the hole), it should be really easy.

I can remove the door tops in about an hour now. It is the first thing I do when I get a D90. Of course, the most recent D90 they popped right off (I cut its nuts off in 2002 when I first owned it hehehe).

Better yet, buy the quick nuts so you don't have to deal with a socket to get the windows off again.

Ha...actually, John, my door tops were stuck on the very first time I took them off. I had to use a rubber mallet and a lot of force to pop them off. The nuts were stuck too. I found it easier to take the door cards off to access the nuts and studs. Just beware that the cappings might be corroded when you finally get the tops off. Mine were badly corroded and I had them redone 3 times. All thanks to the door tops trapping water under the rubber gasket and the gasket itself sticking and pulling the paint right off the cappings. I've vowed to never use the door tops again.

Take my advice, buy badger soft door tops...worth the money and convenience. John's getting them for his Jeep too.

A long while back someone fabed stainless studs, matched with the stainless quick nuts you get fairly free from this problem. however you will still see rusty water as the doorframe rots around the stainless you put in. I have a set of the original door top studs with little to no rust. If anyone needs them make an offer.

finally some progress! I had to cut its nuts off with a grinder on one door, straight through the stud and it felt great! the other top came off with some duralube after sitting overnight. looks really cool with the windoms off, and i might leave it like that till winter.

Hey this brings a thought to mind would there be interest for a run of Stainless Studs? If I can get the school shop to make up a bunch. Ill look into it next week if there is interest. Nt promising anything at this point I will ask though.

Pretty sure AB's are stainless and RNs are not, err well, someone makes them in non-stainess as that is what is on my red truck.
