View Full Version : I've Got A 97 D90 Frame That was just Galvanized

I'm in the process of restoring my 97 D90.
I'm converting it to a truck cab and like the idea of having the extra wheelbase of a 110.
I galvanized my 90 chassis 6 months ago, and have an offer from someone to trade my 90 chassis for their 110 chassis that's galvanized.
My question:
Is my 90 frame that's been galvanized a hotter commodity than a 110 that's galvanized? Should I expect to have to pay him or the other way around? Is this an even swap? What's my frame worth?
Thanks for your help.

Where are you going to find another galvanized 110 frame AND a guy wanting your 90 frame? If I were you I would the even swap and stop messing around with trying to get top dollar. You'll be wasting a lot of time if you did and for what? Very little gain.
Certainly there is more demand for 90 galvanized frames but priority here should be to get your project going.

Generally a 110 frame is worth ~1000 more than a 90 frame.
How was your frame before being dipped? How was his?

$1000 more?! I paid $1000 for mine - a V8 frame, brand new, never installed and it's still sitting in my garage for 5 years now.

Generally galvy 90 frames are $1500 new, while 110 frames are $2500 new.
I paid $700 for my new galvy 110 frame but the secondary market is not what they cost new.
Although you do have me beat, mine has only been in the garage 4 years :-)

Where are some of the places that you guys have found galvanized 90 frames? I called all the OEM places, roversnorth, DAP, atlantic british, etc. and none of them have any in right now.
Also, on another note, if I did have to buy a regular frame, where could I get it galvanized at??
TIA!

Try Roversdownsouth.com.
Any galvanizer in your area should be able to do it, depending on how big their tanks are.

Thanks Eric, but they only have TD5 frames, no V8 ones. Are TD5 frames easy to convert to V8??
Any other ideas?

Try www.lrx.com and look in Canada, there are some 110 chassis's and rolling chassis for sale.
They wiil be 2.5NA military's and will not be galvanized.
You should just do the swap. Who cares how much it's worth, I would think the hassle of buying one and then selling yours would be worth the grand that you MIGHT save.

I have no fabrication experience and wouldn't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I assume that you'd need to move the motor mounts and a few other items, but I'd be talking out of my butt so I can't offer any advice or direction. Try searching Pirate4x4 - should have some info on the topic.
I am still researching frame swaps because the salt kill things here and It's only a matter of time. I found Richards Chasis that will fab a frame to LHD NAS spec, but haven't been able to find out if his frames are any good. I am also sure that Marsland would be able to fab a NAS frame for you. I think Atlantic British is a dealer and perhaps they could order one up for?
Sorry for the lack of any decent advice. Just in the planning stages myself. I am envious that your already progressing on the resto! :)

Anybody know how much a NAS d-90 frame weighs? the galvanizing places around here (there are 3 of them that will do it) charge about $0.28 per pound of metal (weighed after the galvanizing process which adds about 6% of the total weight before galvanizing). Most of them have a minimum charge of $140 also. So, any figures on how much the frame weighs would be great!!

Doesn't ECR sell galvanized frames specific to your application? I'm sure they aren't the cheapest but it would most likely save some fab time and the pains if things aren't right.

My experience on the frames I have had galvanized is 200-300 dollars on a D90 frame. Hope this helps.

Joe,
What's ECR, I'm not sure that I'm familiar with them, do you have any contact info?

Very cool site.
http://www.eastcoastrover.com/usedparts.html they have used frames for sale. I bet if you worked with them you get them to galv and ship it as well.

They also sell new chasis from Designa Chasis that are galvanized with TDi motor mounts. I can't find the exact page but I remember seeing it on their site.

Joe,
I don't want the TD5 mounts, I would need the V8 mounts. Sorry if I was vague in earlier posts. I emailed them (couldn't get them on the phone) and asked them if they had any frames (glavanized or not) for the V8 NAS D90's I'll let you know what they say!

ECR will only sell you a new galvy frame if you have them do the conversion work. They won't sell them alone. They do have some used non-galvy frames for $1500 though. Might be an option... we'll see

Bradlee, try calling DAP (http://www.dap-inc.com) , they might be able to get you the NAS chassis. However it might take some time. Getting a used 90 frame is also not a bad way to go. Just as long as it's not too rough. But even a bad rear member is a relatively simple fix.
A TD5 frame wouldn't be bad either. It already has the NAS gas tank mounts (if I recall correctly). All you need to do is move the motor mounts. Relatively easy to do prior to getting it galvied.

Thanks David,
I tried DAP already and they're prices are pretty steep. When I called they didn't have any used ones either. I'd have to check my notes, but IIRC they wanted around $3000 for a new one.
