So it is time to start a thread on this here project. I have certainly been on here long enough with many questions and many parts for sale and I have finally found time to start a thread on this build.
Some background first. My first car at 16 was a 69 IIA Bugeye 88. After driving it all through high school and most of college and adding many dents off road we retired it when I bought a salvaged title rebuilt 1997 SW 90 LE with 8,000 miles on it.
After many many years of wheeling and modifications in the 90 life changed on me and after starting a business and having 2 boys the truck was pretty much useless to us. We wanted a 110 to make room for the boys. I had two choices. Sell my 90 and try find a 110 or convert my 90 to one. I decided I could not let my truck go so I might as well just modify it.
The biggest challenge is fighting ever urge to not totally restore the truck. Finances and time just will not allow it. So I am doing my best to rebuild it fixing the vital problems and not cutting anymore corners than I have to.
The other goal was to do it spending as little as possible. With a TON of luck and some ingenuity I am progressing rather well on that front. Here are some images of it started out as as well as some progress images. I took it apart in June of 2007 then started hunting for parts and selling others off my 90. I was able to get a 1983 110 parts car of off ebay which gave me the frame and other vital large parts. The rear crossmember had to be replaced but otherwise the frame was in good condition. The only real obstacles were the footwells in the 90's bulkhead. I was very shocked at how rusty they were as the truck was in really condition when taken apart. We replaced them and stuck the bulkhead on the new galvy frame. The plan is to keep it willow green with a white top as well as retaining as many LE options as possible including the rear ladder that will later be modified to bolt to the NAS 110 cage I have for it.
Specs are going to be-
4.10's with ARB's front and rear
Stock 4.0 to be upgraded to a 4.6 down the road
Rear sals disc conversion
Dynamat throughout
sunroof
Full NAS cage
Custom front ARB bumper with Warn 8274
Snorkel
Tire size unsure but as close to 35" as possible
Custom rear bumper and tire carrier
Rovertym rear links
Custom off road sway bar in rear
possible SG 3-link- will decide how it handles when done
Make the cabin as comfortable as possible without breaking the bank
custom sliders with bars
Custom interior storage
rear AC if I can ever find or afford an elite unit
Fox or the like shocks
lift is yet to be determined
Some sort of custom middle seats- possible Range Rover
I am sure the list will grow.
Hopefully I can start giving back a bit to the great help I have received here.
I will do my best to keep it updated.

Thanks! Yeah the series truck is technically my dad's. It was my first car at 16. Love that truck. Needs to be gone through next. Good eye on the Healey's. The red one is my dad's first car he bought in 1964 I think. Ground up on it over 15 years ago and rebuilt to a works rally replica. The green one is a 53 104 rebuilt ground up also.
Hard to believe my son was 2 then. Now he is 4! I gotta start picking up the pace!
I will update soon with some more detail images.

looks great so far Tyler! looking forward to seeing more pics of the build. (I'm partial to Willow Green 110's though - pm me if you want to see some pics of mine).
I'm intrigued by your modified ARB bumper. Care to share any more details on how you modified it? The approach angle looks much better.

Thanks Tom. Yeah i would love to see some images of your truck. Back when I started this thing I knew of no other willow 110's I have since seen a few now which is cool.
As for the Bumper it was one of the very first ARB bumpers. You know the early ones that hung pretty low. So I got the bumper for next to free and ran it for a while and then decided to modify it. I first cut the ends like the photo shows and re boxed them in to raise the clearance in front of the tires. To help with the approach angle I cut the bracket off that mount to the frame and took about an inch or so out of them to move the bumper closer to the truck and then simply bolted them back on the truck and raised the bumper up to where I wanted it and re welded them on. I then made some gussets and reinforced the entire thing. Finally had it powder coated. I love it. It offers a ton of protection and now sits where it needs to be. Oh I also trimmed off the D-shackle mounts on the bottom and the upper winch fairlead mount since I was going to run a synthetic line fairlead.
Hope that makes sense. The bumper is packed away or I would take a photo of it and it would all make sense. Back in the day we did it with the newer style ARB bumpers and simply cut the brackets at an angle if I remember right and just slid the bumper up the brackets to move it closer to the truck as well as up at the same time and then just re weld it.

Forgot to add the photo showing the first mod to the bumper.
You can also see where the red arrow is is where I moved the bumper up and added the gusset.

243/300 Mk II?
Yeah I was thinking of 243.5 but I liked the 1/2 better, but then when I typed it today with the two /'s it looked kind of stupid so I do not know.
I will also have the old pate mounted on the truck somewhere not sure where.
Mike I also thought of that - 301/300 but that would possibly not be correct as someone else could build one out of an LE and then I would be lying or would have to prove that I did it first!

Was over at the shop and shot a few more updated images.
Fuel lines almost done. They were a bitch to bend out of that coil but in the end look pretty good. Brake line done. Rear harness extended and fished in and done. For the harness exstension we used a piece of 19 conductor SO cord, basically just a big extension cord but made for the elements and soldered and heat shrunk it to the orig harness. Worked perfectly.
Shot some images of the finished footwell patch with seam sealer and repainted and also of the start of the body work to repair and update the rear tub. I am also having a blank made to fit in the fuel filler cut out so I can update the filler neck to the new style. Tub was in pretty good shape but needed some TLC and repair. In the end I feel it will be just fine.
I also had new tabs for the rear cross member made and removed the ones that came with the replacement cross member and welded the new ones on to make it as close to factory as possible. Plus the flush mounted ones would not allow my rear bumper to work so I had to. I was very surprised after galvanizing the frame that the old welds popped back up as I had ground them totally smooth. Kind of sucked but it will be fine once the bumper goes on.

No problem however I must say the photo is misleading. My tub was sitting high there so I could shoot a photo of the lines. The tub support there actually sits on the little bracket there so the lines need to really be tight. I will shoot another photo of it for you with the tub sitting like it should be.
Sorry to get you excited!

Not sure why but when you weld something and grind it down flush then go and galv. the piece, the weld bubbles back up and swells... I had that happen every time. Prob. due to heat or something.. IT once did that on a front Radiator support that I rebuilt on a series 3. After the metal work, it looked great. Dipped it and the repair area all showed up. I was pissed.. I was luck hat I just grinded it down then, and was able to prime and paint it.

Not sure about the problem, but I had a _really good_ welder do the work on my chassis - it didn't have that problem anywhere after I galved it. Maybe I'm not understanding...

I am glad it happened to someone else as I thought it was something I did.
Basically Jim it seems to happen where you have ground down a weld that was previously there. The galvanizing seems to then slightly raise the weld again. Weird as where I ground down the welds on my cross member that were there from the original tabs it was perfectly smooth and totally gone. Then after dipping it they were there just not as prominent as before. I can not explain it either.

Isn't it something to do with residual weld material reacting with the zinc to build up more in a localized area? I thought Matt B posted something along those lines, but I can't find the thread.

Time to resurrect this thread. The part that depresses me is that I last posted on it almost a year ago! Unreal where the time goes.
Good news is that a ton has happened since then so this is a bit of a long thread. You would think it would be done by now but time is the smallest resource I seem to have.
So in the fall all the paint was finished up. That was a crazy process as the rear tub was pretty rough and took way more man hours than I thought to prep it. I also wanted to make sure the galvanized t-posts were painted properly. In the end I took them back to the galvanizers and had them acid etch dip them. That prepared them to accept paint. Then my painter used a self etching primer and then paint. All seems pretty good.
From there it was months of work on the one of the biggest mods of the truck, the installation of the Disco II middle seat. I have never liked the stock middle seat in a 110 and wanted to give my kids a way more safe and comfortable place to ride. So I saw a post here of a DII seat installed in a 110 and decided to go for it. I bought a used black leather DII seat and started to cut and fab. I am really happy with the result. It was not easy but it fits really well. We had to cut out the tub and have some replacement panels to make room for the seat as well as fab some brackets for mounting as well as some nut plates so the seat can be removed with ease.
I then undercoated the tub and rust proof anything I could as well as spent hours seam sealing the tub and seatbox. Got the holes cut in the tub as well for the NAS cage as well.
Finally as of late got the tub on and spent a few days aligning the tub, bulkhead and t-posts. Thanks to posts by JimC, and MUDSUX for help on the string trick. Mine was a bit different as in the end it appears that my bulkhead might have been sprung a bit as I needed more washers on one side than the other to make it all line up. Frustrating process but in the end all seems good.
Also spent a decent amount time modifying the rear exo cage mounts as an early 110 tub is different from an NAS one and the cage feet that mount to the rear x-member need to be cut and fished through the tub in two separate pieces.
Finally got my Safari Gard rear shock towers modified to fit a 110. Had to cut them down and fab up some more brackets to make them fit. I am now in the process if restoring my FOX shocks by having the shock bodies re-plated to original looking finish as mine were pretty rusty.
Then of course hours researching the rest of the mods.
In the months to come I will be building the new rear door as well as the other 4 doors. Installing the sound deadening mat, and hopefully bolting on doors and roof soon.

Hello Tyler, the D2 rear seats are great, do you have some more detail pics of the conversion?
Did you need to do some work on the seats them self too?
I also rebuilding my 90 into 110. Not as good as you do it, but also nice and for the same reasons.
I used my trusted 90 200Tdi 1993 for parts to put them into the 1984 2,5 NA 110.
Replacing the engine of course and change from RHD to LHD because it was also an UK import.
Also the rears and fron axle.
I aslo looked for a D3 second row seats but the are hard to get and also difficult to fit I think.
Hope to hear from you.

Hey Erik-
Thanks for the kind words on the project. Glad to hear you are doing the same project. I know it will be worth it but this project sure is a big one. Loads of time.
As for the DII seats. There are no mods required to the seat except that I cut off the child seat latches on the sides to make it a better fit. Other wise no mods to the seats just the mods to the rear tub like I showed.
I do not have any more images of them right now but I promise to shoot some more when I put the seats in for good. Just not promising when that will actually be!
Thanks and good luck with your project.

What tires are in that last set of pictures?
And I wonder if the seat mod would work in a double cab, if there is enough room to move them back?

Thanks Tom. The tires are my old BFG 35x12.50's from my 90. Not sure I am going to stick with that size. I will for sure get new BFG KM2's just not sure what size they will be just yet.
As for the double cab and the DII seats I have no idea to be honest. My gut says it would not as there will not be enough room to scoot them back.

Tyler - great thread and great job. I see you've done well in resisting doing a total restore :). Great job on the fuel and brake lines.
Your DII seat post couldn't have come at a better time - I'm about to pull my tub and do the same mod for pretty much the same reasons. I'm going to try go a step further and do a dual install - the three position DII rear for carrying more passengers or just two front DII seats with a middle cubby box(to match the fronts I'm replacing with same) so the rears get even more comfort and heat - but lose a passenger. We'll see how that goes.
beautiful work. Kids do slow things down but so worth it....

Hy Tyler,
Thanx for these pictures, these are the ones I was waiting for!
This is looking great.
I just bought the same seats for my 110!
By chance there was a 2003 D2 TD5 STS rear seat availible at our Dutch Land Rover Club site! (www.LRCH.nl (http://www.LRCH.nl))
The guy had it still, after he bought the car second hand.
Here in Holland they made a commercial car out of it and that means the the back side windows have to be black (not tinted!) and the rear seats has to come out.
So this one is never used! I only payed about €100,- (about $145,-) for it, not much I think.
I think I´m the first one here in Holland that will do this on a 110.
Are the hooks you used for locking the seats to the floor, the original ones or are these after market parts.
Are the seats sitting lower then the original 110 seats?
That is what I'm looking for in this seats.

Plugging right alone on the project. Spent the past months acquiring parts and getting some work done on the truck. It really is coming alone nicely. I feel like I am actually gaining on it for once. Got the rear axle almost done and under the truck. 4.10 gears, arb locker installed, axles, gears and locker all went smoothly thanks to Keith at Rover Tracks! Also spent some time bending the brake lines for the rear axle as well as messing with the hubs and rear disc conversion. Almost done with the axle just need to machine a bit more off of the caliper brackets then that can all go back together.
It was a bitch getting the rear axle under the truck but all is good now with RoverTym rear links.
Also spent a ton of time on the carpet. I am really happy with the final product. Carpet cost me about $100 to buy all of it then I cut it all myself and have a shop bind it and put insulating foam on some of it for only $86. So all new carpet came out to under $200. :) I also talked to the same shop about recovering and repairing the foam on the front seats to match the disco II middle seat. We found some black vinyl that almost perfectly matches the black leather of the Disco II middle seat for only $350 for both seats. Very excited to get that done.
Also installed the window sides. Very exciting to see the truck start to come together. As well as getting the roof ready for paint. Cutting the sunroof in was a bit unnerving but all in all pretty easy.
Finally got my Rubbolite LED lights in which was cool. My parents were able to find some while on vacation in the UK so I saved a few $ there.
Next up is roof install and exo cage blast and powder coat.
Till next update.

Hey Erik! Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.
I ended up just mounting the seat pretty much to the floor. It seems to work out well and fit the best. It was a bit tight for my legs as well but way way better than the original 110 seats that did not hardly allow for me to fit at all. Plus I do not plan on riding much back there. So if I could fit okay then others should fit perfectly fine as I am not a small person. :)

He is on the bridge (to lift the car) so I have to wait till he is finished.
My help will speed things up.

Erik

Time for a long needed update!
I have been working hard for what seems like forever so I figured it was time to update. Was able to get some major visual progress done on the project last week. Awesome to see it come together.
Got the front seats redone in black vinyl that looks and feels like leather. They found fabric to match the Disco II seat I put in the rear. They look amazing and only $350 to do both. I am very happy with the results. Got a total of 38 pieces powdercoated now waiting to go on. Had to rework a custom rear bumper I fabbed up using SG corner protectors back in the day. I had to extend them for a 110 rear tub so I had new pieces bent and then welded them to the original bumper. Turned out great.
Was able to get the entire cage on as well as front and middle seats all done. Front and rear drive shafts are on, clutch is bled, working on headliners now. Doors are very soon.
Really happy my father made me take the front of the cage off and drill holes for the wires for each hella and then fish all the wires inside the tube of the cage and into the engine bay. No more zip ties and smurf tube! Looks great.
I also welded new tabs for the lights on the cage to make them more like a 90 equally spaced as opposed to a NAS 110.
Found a great solution for gaskets on the feet of the cage. I used neoprene that had a sticky back. For some reason my cage when fitted had some pretty good unequal gaps where it met the body so this was a great way to fill and seal those gaps and look great also.
Things to come in the next month. Assemble and hang all five doors, finish up engine compartment, build new oil cooler lines, install custom sway bar on rear and engineer exhaust routing, install sliders, snorkel, front bumper, interior, mount custom spare tire carrier etc....
Lots to do but excited to see the light at the end of the almost 5 year tunnel.

On a side-note, I may end up using your original frame, that my friend bought from you on my 90!

THanks Kenny!
I am going to use the same bumper I had on my 90.
It is a first version ARB that I modified back in the day. I moved it back and up then cut the wings.
I really like it. It is also modified for a Warn 8274

Nice. I think ARB should have "cut the wings" like that from the factory.

Looks nice Gustavo. I like it. I like yours better as since mine is the old school first version when I raised it up and moved it in it made the top bar to high for my taste. It is not horrible by any means but your is nicer.
I agree as well never understood the arb wings on these things.

Hi Tyler.
Big progress on your build! Looks better then new. 👍
Love the front seats, they fit the rear seats perfect.
I started afsin too on my project. My brothers RR Classic is ready.
I removed the rear axle and stripping the back part of the chassis for cleaning and painting. Making bigger steps again!
Hope to see more from you soon.

Erik

Hi Erik,
Nice shop! Did you lift that body of your frame in one piece with that Lift?
Leuk om meer Nederlanders te zien op dit forum!
Cheers Jeroen

Looks like the frame is actually still on...I think he removed the drivetrain/axles/etc only.

Hoi Jeroen,
Leuk om te zien inderdaad.
Zeker als die andere Nederlander in Canada zit, met een 110! :)
Back in Englisch.
This ramp is just to lift the compleet car to work on the bottom.
Nathan was right, I removed the rear axle here.
The planning was to just put in a 200tdi engine and change stearing from RHD to LHD.
The more you remove from the car the more you see that needs some attention.
After all it would have been easier to have removed the complete body. I didn't :sad
Two years and still not ready, better late then never :).
What are you doing in Canada, except diving an LR110?
Nice meeting you this way.
Groetjes,

Yep Jasnon you where right! i looked to fast! I assumed that the body was lifted because they do that a lot in that way in Europe.
For Erik: I am a fly fishing guide and loving it! I use my 110 to get to some very remote places in northern BC.
I will PM you later! Keep up the good work!
