Driveshaft weights? Help!

Dealer is telling me that there are lead driveshaft weights that have partly fallen off.

They want $715 for a new rear driveshaft.


any thoughts?

Call Bill at Great Basin Rover. I think his replacement shafts, balanced are either $299 or $399. Can't remember which.

They want $340 for O2 sensors I need. (A PIECE!)

And like, a million dollars to install them.


Are they difficult to put in? Any special tools?

It is a universal 4-wire which you splice into your wiring. Bought a couple last year at $95 each and work great. Get some butt connectors and wrap the vinyl sleeve you already have as well as some duct tape.

O2 sensors are expensive but search around. I think people use to get them from Nathan Crabtree at Discount Rovers (http://www.discountbritishparts.com/Defender/defender.html). They are "usually" easy to put in. Nothing you couldn't try yourself and that a regular mechanic couldn't back you up with. That's only if they get stck and you break them off. It's rare you need all four.

I'm plagued with miserable Rover shops. One disaster to the next. They often charge me huge $, and rarely manage to fix the problem.

It's a lose-win relationship.

There was a scene in National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation where a blackjack dealer suggested to Chevy Chase that he not bother sitting down to play the game, but rather he just take his money, kick him in the balls, and be on his way.

If your drive shaft is in decent condition and is just missing a weight call a local drive train shop in your area. They should be able to balance the shaft for you for very very little money.

Bill makes a good shaft but it does not sound like you need a new one.

I'll second Dave's suggestion about going to a local drive shaft shop. I have taken drive shafts in to have balanced and inspected at a local shop near me and they only charged 50 bucks each.

I've replace the O2 sensors twice. They are very easy to do. No special tools needed.

$715 sounds like the highest possible retail price for an OEM driveshaft.

For comparison, a custom driveshaft is significantly less expensive. I had one made for my car a few years back that cost me just over two hundred. Granted, it probably wasn't as beefy as one for a Land Rover but it was about a third of what you were quoted.

If the only problem is that a balancing weight has fallen off, then I agree with the others who said to just take it to a driveline shop and get it rebalanced. You won't spend anywhere near what you would for a new driveshaft. It's hard to believe (well, maybe not) that the dealer would even have the gall to suggest a new driveshaft if the only problem is a balancing weight.

About the O2 sensors...

I just ordered some... searched around for the right one's because I really don't feel like doing any 'splicing' and I also hear that as far as O2 sensors go it's not good to 'splice' because it's an easy 'IN' for moisture and the elements to get in there.

After doing a bunch of searching for GENUINE O2 sensors that you don't have to do any 'splicing' ... Nathan at DiscountBritishParts.com had some for $89.50 a piece...

Oh and 2 more things...
The O2 sensors in theory are an easy install but if they're corroded and seized on there it can be a fairly hair experience... If you do a search on this board you'll find some horror stories.

And yes Nathan's price is very good but you'll be waiting at least a week for them, I think he gets them from the U.K. hence the decent price.
