View Full Version : Windscreen ideas

OK I want to fold down or take off the windscreen, but I have a slight problem. The State inspection sticker is stuck on the windscreen, so if I take it off then I can be pulled over for driving an uninspected vehicle. So if I could fold it down then I would still have an inspection sticker, but the roll cage is in the way! So other then caring the windscreen around in the back (not really a good idea) or trying to peel off the already faded and dying sticker and putting it on a sheet of plexy glass then bolt it to the cage, does anyone else have any good ideas?
The reason, I really don't feel I am getting enough mud on myself when I'm out wheeling. And if I remove the windscreen I have calculated that I can increase my mud coverage by at least 50%.
I posted in misc because I am sure there will be only a small amount of replies that actually have tech content. :grin
Thanks

Mike, although I don't have any suggestions to help you with your windshield issues, can I have first dibs on your windshield wiper motors if they are perfectly working? Would trade you a nice pair of goggles for the motor.... :grin :evilfinge

If you can get them off way not laminate them and epoxy them to the front roll bar?

HMMMM ahhhh no, they always seem to have questions, when I would think they would be giving me the answers. Although your not the first to ask!:grin And Dave Marchand thought I should be committed to a mental hospital, but he drives a SW so he wouldn't know.

How about making them into some kind of front grill badge? Does the law state they have to be in a certain location on the turck?

Sorry Glenn,I plan on keeping them to wipe off my glasses, I just need to reaim the washer nozzles. That and to "legally" pass inspection you need them, but you don't need a wind screen.

Go to the DMV or whatever and get a new sticker. Just tell them your windshield broke and you need a new sticker, and stick it on your roll bar. How hard is that????

Sandwich it between two pieces of plexy and run some silicon around the edge.

I think they need to be in the middle of the windscreen just under the rear view mirror. I am going to have to look into removing it, they do give us new stickers every year, but they are made so you cannot transfer them from car to car. The worst part is this years color is PINK!

How hard is that????Well the DMV doesn't issue them, the inspection station that inspects your car does, they allso have to put the sticker on, I guess I need to talk with the DMV or go to a shady inspection station. Doesn’t the registration show that the inspection been done???? I mean if you have a valid plates and registration that proves that your truck passed inspection right? Just take the windshield off and enjoy. I'll be doing that soon myself.

Nope, the registration here shows you registered your vehical this year, the sticker shows that you passed the state inspection, you can be registered but not be inspected, the cops around here let me get away with ALOT! But this would be pushing it.

You east coasters have issues. Good thing we don't have that stuff here in CO. You get your emission done every two years. Valid plates = passed emissions.

take a piece of plexi in the lower corner of your empty windscreen and put the sticker. Situation solved.

How about taking the lower bar around the frame off folding the windshield flat then put the bar back. Or do the same as above but with a bar that's bent to fit. Even better mount the windshield flat above your head to the cage. Instant sunroof.

Hmm Tyler I'm going to have to take a look at it in the AM! I like the plexi idea I am going to have to do something!

Mike, are you planning on going on trips with the windshield off? Like Paragon or Rausch? If so then be ready to be pulled over and hassled. I know a few people from a local Jeep club that have gotten tickets in PA for not having doors on their Jeeps. Most of which were thrown out in court but, they still had to go through the hassle of getting pulled over, getting a ticket, and going to court to get it taken care of. More trouble then it's worth if you ask me..
As for the sticker placement, go to get another inspection without the windshied, bring a piece of thin lexon plastic that bends, if the inspector passes you without the windshield (probably won't) then have them put it onto the lexon. Then slap some two sided tape onto the back of it, wrap it around the roll bar in the spot closest to where it should be on the window, and then zip-tie each end. Of course the first watery mud hole you hit the sticker will get wet and fall apart. Only way around that is to sandwich it like someone else mentioned before. Or you could just tell the cop that your windshield broke and you will have a new sticker put on when you get the new windshield.

HMMM, I have been down to Penn and VA and never been pulled over for no doors, I guess I have been lucky. Up here they look at the door thing like; well he is alot safer then if he was on a motorcycle, and it's easier to see if I have a seatbelt on. For trips I may have to do something about the door problem you guys have.
I think I'll call the DMV on Tuesday and ask what is legal and what is not.

Mike, you could also just remove the front part of the roll cage then you can fold down the winshield. there are 4 bolts in each front fender and 1 on each bar that runs above the doors. You can then just slide if forward and out. Wala...

Hey Mike, to get the sticker off of my old windshield when I swapped to a heated one. I just used a tea kettle. Let it steam up really well and then steam the sticker. It will come off in no time. And you'll be able to reapply easily...
And yes, your crazy. McLean is right down the street from me and I'm waiting for the call from you, when they commit you...

Mike,
Not to be a buzzkill, but check your state regs before removing the window. Many states have laws requiring the window to be upright (and installed) to be considered street legal. I've known Jeep owners who have been stopped for having a folded window.
If you're looking for more mud, though, perhaps the following might help. Mud skiing: ride behind friends truck while being pulled by tow strap. Works great in rain slicked muddy field. You get sprayed by the truck and get splashed in mud holes.

Well, I know a few guys with Jeeps that fold down andthey don't get pulled over. Here in NH they only rerquier you to have some type of eye protection, other then that they really could care less about the windows.
As for the Mud skiing, well I think I'll pass, I like to be the one driving, and we kinda do the same thing over here during the winter in a snow filled parking lot, fun until you smash into the ground.
I don'tknow about the Florida thing, isn't it a bit hot and humid down there?
Dave I think I'll try the steam Idea!

Alright! Windscreen off! Boy is it windy with it off! If you have driven with the top off at 85mph then you know what it is like to drive with the windscreen off at 40mph.
Easy to remove, one thing I forgot was the wires for the curtisy light, they run up the drivers side window frame, and there is a connector 1/2 way up the window.
The sticker problem, well I did as some suggested and mounted it up on the roll cage using some angle aluminum, and a small piece of plexi glass. I thought about what Dave said and just waited for it to rain then the sticker just pulled off, why I was worried is it has cuts in it like you see on some price tags, so you can't peel it off.
Don't worry about me driving through states that don't like it, it is very windy, not very highway friendly. But on the brighter side it is awsome at slow speed! Even at 5mph it gives you a nice cooling breeze, so as long as you are moving on the trail you are good. Oh yeah it feels real odd when it rains.

Ron, I'll have to keep track of my mileage, with luck it will go from realy bad to just bad.:grin
Oh and a pic from the front, I think it looks odd without the window but I have never seen one without a windscreen.
Edit: having the rear veiw mirror mounted up that high sucks! It should be at eye level so it looks back and not down.

I like it!
In one of my more delusional moments I considered removing the cage and folding the windscreen so I could fit in parking garages. Then it occured to me that the head rests (and MY HEAD) might still hit the roof of the parking garage!

LOL good point on the hole head thing, although you could remove the headrest and duck. How high is your 90? I think the top of the snorkel is only 7 foot or so, most parking garages around here are more then that. But I wouldn't feel safe with out the cage, even if it only helps a little that is much better then nothing in my book.

The garages in downtown Phila are often less than 6ft. Mine is only 2in higher than stock (well plus lights).
No cage would not bother me.

If you get to the point where you have to have a windshield to comply with someone's regs, you could get a cheap one from RDS and cut it down to only a few inches tall - kind of like old racing screens. Just cut the posts and have a glass hop cut down the windshield a polish the edge.

HMMM, I kinda like the idea, but I think I could make it better! I could get some chicken wire/ expanded metal and use it as a screen across the front roll cage, kinda like heavy equipment uses! Like this

Just kidding. But I do need some better eye protection! The wind is real annoying coming up under my glasses.

You could stop buy your local Harley shop and pick up a set of WWII style bomber goggles and one of those ear flap leather bomber hats to go with them..

Mike...Problem Solved!
Buy an old Series truck. Register it with antique plates and whalah! No inspection required and you do not have to display the city sticker. There is a fella down here that runs his truck like that all year. Mostly legal too....

Hmmm, no not quiet my style
And Troy, well almost. In NH you have to pass inspection if you want to go on the highway, otherwise you need to register as farm equipment, that wouldn't be too cool as I would need one of Dave's orange triangles to hang on the back, and I would be limited to about 30mph max speed.

OK, it's back on. Turns out driving in the rain at +50mph kinda hurts, that and I have a hard enough time getting passengers with the windscreen, I don't think anyone will ride in it without. I did manage to get an extra 10 miles out of my last tank of gas.
THANKS for all the ideas gang!:grin
