Still a bit tenative,
1983 rolling chassis is done deal. Thanks Ron
Currently a 2.5 TD so it's an easy 200tdi swap.

Late Model 110 crew cab is just about done.

So far I have the boosts, and the LHD windshield wipers. (pics to come)
Need a 200tdi and LHD parts? Anyone?

Other than the turbo and the manifold, how different is the rest of the Disco 200tdi from the defender 200tdi?

Frame was cut and parts of it left just to hold the body together, drivetrain, axles, etc are gone, its pretty much everything north of the frame

The kids are awesome, but I do a lot of work myself as well.
Thanks for the advice and keep it coming, I do realize my equation is oversimplified. I shoud have used a couple of varibles in there! Some X's andY's maybe even some Z's
I'll try and get my 10 year austistic math savant in my summer school class to draw something up! No joke, he will do it, he was just helping me with my 50:1 ratio in my 2.8 gal outboard gas tank. 5-7/25 ounces of oil per tank.
No more guessing at the pump, and the engine may survive the summer.

I have to go pick up the Chassis this weekend, I hope. It's up to Earl.

200tdi is in the works. So the 2.5 TD will be going.

Yesterday I actually put a 235-85-16 on the hood of my 90 and I didn't really like it.

She's my second Ridgeback, I adopted her in June, shes awesome, its amazing how much like my first one she is.
I had my first one Haley for 12+ years.

The Rolling frame is home, and the 200tdi is on its way.
Spent the day stripping parts off the truck with Ron, Good times!
The frame looks good except for one spot I'm a bit worried about, pics on Tuesday.
Fist time with a carrier behind me, kept wondering who the hell was tailgating me.

Bulkhead is a bit rough, but not too bad, I'll probably use use the newer one from the crew cab.
I had a look at a few of the late model bulkheads at Ron's house, even the ones as late as 1997 seem to have all the templetes for LHD to be cut into, the 1983 are actually cut but covered.

The frame looks good except for a botched rear cross member and the 2 pictured spots of rust at the pictured arrows.

The dirt and water must have sat in these 2 spots and rusted the through the frame. I'll get some better pics Monday, but I was wondering what people thought.

Can't really see the problems from the pix, but I bet it will be super-easy to fix. Not a big deal considering you're going to sandblast and galv the chassis anyway right? Right? :)

The rust is in an odd place. Basically on top of the frame right where the arrows are. The drain channel got plugged and mud piled up and rusted that spot. Joe Z from Conn. did the welding with/for JimC. You might want to see if he is available because he is the most insane welder I have seen (it is like art work).

I think prior to spending time and effort trying to patch it and repair it you should have the entire frame blasted and see what you have as a starting point and go from there.

Maybe I'm optimistic but it doesn't look that bad - both the frame and the bulkhead. Yeah, I think Dave and you have the right move - get it blasted and then have a good visual starting point. And besides with it blasted the prep work to weld patches in should be a lot easier.

I cut the rear cross member off, I though someone was smuggling dope in the frame when some grass came out of the frame. Cut the wires by accident, yes I am an idiot.

picture 3 was me trying to remove the splined shaft to swap it into the 2000 110 which has the other shaft.

Picture 4 I was wondering what that is?

Picture 6 will the brake junction(?) stay there for LHD?

I don't see what the problem is when you buy a 'take out' engine you get the part which came with the vehicle. I see alot of 300tdi vehicles on the road with radiators worse than that in the UK. If you don't like it replace it. Did Dan say he'd provide you with a new Rad, I doubt it.

I don't believe I mentioned any names or placed blame, just wanted some opinions.

There were a few things wrong the delivery and I dealt with it privately.

He's a big boy, and he can defend himself.

So just to be clear, by your definition a complete engine would be OK as long as everything is there? Blown engine/Blown tranny/Rusty Rad. "if you don't like it, replace it"

Definitely some repairs to be made there. How did that one area by the large box crossmember come out?

Make sure you toss those awful orange Deflex bushings, I have them on the 90 and they are terrible.

Looked into the galvanizing, but due to the fact that the nearest guy is in Jersey and that i'm waiting for repairs and the new rear crossmember, i decided to Por15 it, so it won't rust up again. I have read a lot of good things and had some luck in the past.

Just got my Injector Pump back from my man Hans. When mine started to leak I bought an extra Inj pump on ebay. I dropped it off to get it checked and it needed to be totally rebuilt, $550 ouch but it sure is pretty. I also dropped off the Injectors to be checked out today.

Hans is a guy who I hooked up with when I started doing my Mercedes. I called out west for a Bosch FI expert and they said I was in luck their expert had the same area code as me. As you would imagine he's a German Dude, colorful old guy.

Since the leak in my 90 has subsided? I may do the Pump and Injectors in the 110 first to see the difference in the two.

Flywheel is cut and the clutch will be on tomorrow.

Frame is all repaired except for the rear cross member.

The engine is together and in the truck.

Had the Injector pump rebuilt, injectors redone, new glow plugs, clutch, timing belt, and the turbo is off and being looked at.

Got a education on the swivel balls tonight, took them apart, not as bad as I thought they would be, but I haven't gotten them back together yet.

I need the LHD parts for the truck and was hoping I could use them complete but the swivels are all pitted.

Axles are apart to put disc brakes on the rear salisbury.

Doing all new bearings and seals, there sure are a lot.

The front will be DiscoI: Hubs, stubs, axles, CVs, and Diff

On the rear I will be able to use the existing stubs, the 1983 110 front hubs, disco I rear Calipers and rotors+caliper brackets (3306)

Lots of crap in the axle, a bit concerned.

Tom

I've had several axles in that condition, in both instances I made a long handled wire brush and completely cleaned out the axle tubes and housing. I then flushed with a can or tow of brake cleaner followed by a swab with a rag wrapped around another long handle. I changed the diff plugs for magnetic ones and haven't had a problem with either one. Once you get the majority of that stuff out and start running it the inside of the axle should not continue to rust.

I got some new Brembo rotors and everything seems to be working.

I have fitted the Disco I Calipers and the 110 calipers on the front end and they both seem to be working.

I assume the 110 calipers would be preferable?

On the front, I did end up using the original housing with all Disco I innards, Disco I, hubs/rotors/stubs/axles/ diff. Fixed the problem with the short Diff studs by stealing them from my old 10 spline axle housing.

On the back I used the 1983 110 front hubs w/ Disco I rotors, and Disco I Calipers.

Axles stayed the same in the back.

Turbo came out very nice, and there seems to less shaft play.

I am not sure there is much difference between disco I and 110 front calipers. I would use whatever is in better condition.

The only things I can think of that might be different is the piston size (I think they are the same) and the hardware. It is not like a NAS D90 caliper where it is for a vented rotor.

Ren Ching
January 24th, 2011, 11:50 AM
I have the disco 1 calipers on my 90. They were by all appearances identical to the (presumably) 90 calipers that were on the car when it came over from the UK. I have compared what I have to standard 110 calipers and by outward appearance they are totally different. The 110 calipers are bigger and the brake line goes in @ a different location I think in the center of the caliper.

tomaco1
January 24th, 2011, 07:36 PM
They are bigger, and the brake lines match up perfect to the 11o lines i got from Classic tube.

Today I broke out the old fish scale and did the swivel preload, not as bad as I thought it would be. Would probably have been easier if i bought the new shim kit george sells.

does anyone know if the top swivel mount bolts need lock tight? the manual says the bottom 2 do, but doesnt say anything about the top 2?

You have done real well with the old girl Tom. I have to dig up farmer Andy's email and send him the picture.

Broke down and got some new tires, 285 BF KM2s very nice.

I also test fit the fuel lines, it looks like it will be close over one of the cross members?

I'm having a bitch of a time snaking the loom through the frame, contemplated running them outside the frame, but I'm going to try again tomorrow.

Its going to be tight if I get the snake through and was wondering if cutting off the plugs was a terrible idea?

airbornrover
May 5th, 2011, 08:16 AM
I would say yes that would be a horrible idea.

tomaco1
May 5th, 2011, 08:34 AM
horrible, but not terrible?

kidding, i figured running outside the frame was better than cutting anything

cgalpin
May 5th, 2011, 09:51 AM
Tom, search the forum, but others who have done this have described the technique they used. I think you want to get it inside the frame if at all possible.

grnrvrs
May 5th, 2011, 01:16 PM
I also test fit the fuel lines

Are those rivnuts and p-clips securing the lines?

tomaco1
May 5th, 2011, 06:16 PM
P clips, but screws at the moment.

I picked up a set of grayish/black flares, look nice on the blue. Brand new from some company in the Uk.

Its back in the shop where the kids really love to work on it, so a lot is getting done.
Seat box is in and will be painted black, I was going to have it sandblasted but it appears to have been galvanized so I don't want to take the galvy off. I'm hoping to cover it with a Wright mat anyway.

The bulkhead needed to come back a bit, looks like it will need 2 or 3 spacers.

Boosts are powder coated black and the KM2's will go on tomorrow.

this thing is looking insane tom! you think it will be done by the time school is over?

evilfij
May 12th, 2011, 09:52 PM
Tom, the battery box is galvanized (I did not want to let you take the seat box for this reason lol), but the outside is aluminum as they all are so you can blast it with soda (careful sandblasting aluminum as it can warp or pot mark).

One more thing, take out the big bulkhead bolts and slather them in antisieze so they don't rust in the frame holes. You will thank me later.

I need to get myself a shop class! Is there summer school?

Still a bit tenative,
1983 rolling chassis is done deal. Thanks Ron
Currently a 2.5 TD so it's an easy 200tdi swap.

Late Model 110 crew cab is just about done.

So far I have the boosts, and the LHD windshield wipers. (pics to come)
Need a 200tdi and LHD parts? Anyone?

i'd like some LHD dash parts if they can be shippd to the UK??

got a 110 rolling chassis here, approx 89 i think, plus load of other bits if you need anything.

The td5 double cab shell looks in great condition!

tomaco1

I actually made it LHD, I have some rhd stuff laying around

Tom,

Are you keeping the hood black?

tomaco1
July 27th, 2011, 04:57 AM
I am, for the time being. I missed getting it painted, so I had it powder coated flat black. I kinda like the black hood look, I got the idea from some of the buses at school.
Its going to have a tire on it anyway.

killahaas
July 27th, 2011, 05:14 AM
looking good tom, is the truck still at the school or did you have to move it?

tomaco1
July 27th, 2011, 05:41 PM
Mocked some stuff up today.

Truck is at a friends shop for the summer.

Tried fitting the aftermarket wheels spats I got, not sure if I like the look of them. Especially with the black hood and wheels.

Started putting the pipes on the engine, I had to go green, so to speak.

I was a bit concerned about a piece of metal I found in the oil pan, turns out it was probably from the oil dip stick assembly which was loose.

Man my phone takes shitty pictures!

tomaco1
July 28th, 2011, 05:02 PM
I started with the roll bar today, and took a look at he sliders. The 110 sliders seem to stick out a bit further than the ones on my 90.

I have to make some visible progress to inspire myself.

Anyone know what bolts and screws you need to put the wings on?
I have the bulkhead bolts already.

The combination of only having 2 hours to work in teh shop and my ADD has me all over the place!

July 28th, 2011, 07:09 PM
Does't look it.

tomaco1
July 29th, 2011, 07:10 PM
Rollbar is mocked up to the truck.

Question about the oil cooler lines, One was a bit kinked at the engine side so I heated it and bent it back. Seems like it worked, but was wondering if i'm asking for problems.

What cage is that and how is it supposed to look when done?

tomaco1
July 31st, 2011, 09:49 AM
It's a LR cage that's made for the double cab. It's supposed to have a 45 that goes to the back of the bed, but I didn't get that part of it.

bjf
July 31st, 2011, 10:48 AM
Does the cage tie into the frame? I talked to someone with a tomb raider double cab and they said the cage had no tie in.

tomaco1
July 31st, 2011, 06:33 PM
In the front it uses the bulkhead brackets like a NAS cage, in the rear I;m going to have something made.

bjf
July 31st, 2011, 06:39 PM
seems odd they wouldn't tie the cage in the back. It looks like SD so it would make sense to make it functional and not just cosmetic.

tomaco1
July 31st, 2011, 06:42 PM
It may be this cage was only on the Tomb Raider truck, which may have been more of a show deal?

I'm not sure its SD, it had LR stickers and part numbers, and seemed a little less heavy than my 90 cage.

bjf
August 2nd, 2011, 05:59 PM
How come?

tomaco1
August 2nd, 2011, 06:06 PM
I missed getting it painted in June, so I had it powder coated flat black. I like the look, looks mean, plus its a crappy hood.

bjf
August 2nd, 2011, 06:15 PM
Thats cool. It looks good. Just wondering

tomaco1
August 17th, 2011, 04:26 PM
I have a few weeks off so I'm actually getting some work done.
I think I have a bit of a setback as the front springs may be reversed. I have the Driver side on the driver side, but I think its labeled for a RHD truck.

tomaco1
September 15th, 2011, 12:06 PM
Had a huge headache with the freeze out heater, which I think is sorted
3100087 part number for the 200tdi was a pita to get in, I remember it being much easier on my 90
had to drop the fuel tank again and change the sender.
Had to put some flare on to make it feel like I made some progress.

Are you keeping your front middle row seat? Do you have any parts extra? I have a right hand drive 1983 110. Did you originally have a 300tdi? I have a lump with an lt77 engine and am purchasing a 300tdi is this better?

Are you keeping the center front seat? Its a nice build I am repairing my motor and might as well clean up the engine compartment while Im at it. (hydrolocked)

tomaco1
December 13th, 2011, 02:22 PM
I think Im going with a Tuffy console in the middle. I have a bunch of extra stuff, what are you looking for?

tomaco1
January 24th, 2012, 09:00 AM
Got all the wiring figured out, one of the grounds (RH front wing harness) ran through the ECU which is gone.

Lights all work, it even has interior lights, unlike my 90.

Dash is going together, interior looks good, just waiting on an interior mat.

I got a kit for the bonnet mounted spare but the bump stops made the tire sit way to high so I modified the bumps lower to get the spare lower.

Getting close.

All the gauges are in and working, put the dash together.
Just need to get the Stereo and some speakers in.
I also would like to get something for the center of the Mud console, between the gauges and the stereo.

I went with a VDO speedo to match the rest of the gauges and so I could easily set the mileage correctly, but now I have a problem with the low fuel light, it apparently runs through the TD5 speedo.
I used a 300tdi fuel sender in place of the Td5 sender/pump in the tank because the fuel pump/ sender wouldn't work with the 200tdi.

Does anyone know if the 300tdi sender has a spot for the low fuel wire?
