how many miles can i expect out of a d90?

hi folks.

long time reader, first post. this board has been amazingly helpful.

i've got 15 months left on a lease (which i'm counting down daily). when that lease is up, the car goes back to the lot, and i'm seriously considering ponying up for a d90. i've got no problem buying a used truck, and i've got no problem buying a high mileage truck, as long as i can expect to enjoy it for some time.

my wife has a disco ii and loves it, so she's well on board with adding another rover to the garage. it will be 2006 when i buy my d90, meaning the truck will be 9-12 years old. going by the mileage on the classifieds i see now, that means i'll be looking at probably 75k - 100k on a truck.

question is, how many miles have people gotten out of their d90s? can i expect to have it for many years? i have a good rover mechanic, and i'm expecting to spend some money on it. i love these trucks so much that i want to enjoy it for a long time once i've finally gotten one of my own.

any insights would greatly be appreciated.

My truck has 140k on it and is going strong. A couple things have happened that could have been catastrophic if I wasnt lucky/careful-
- An oil cooler line blew in traffic and I pulled over immediately. I just installed new lines and was fine. Could have killed the motor.
- One of my cats got plugged and the engine started to run rough. Cut the cat out and everything was good.

One guy here was selling his 97 with 180k a few weeks back. So there are at least documented cases of them lasting 150k+. Plus its so cheap(ish) and easy drop in a new motor at any time because there is so much cross compatibility betwen Rangie, Disco, and Defender mills.

I saw a 94 with 240k on it and that was 2 years ago.

I have a good friend with a range rover with well over 400k on it.

My 1997 Disco (wife's daily driver and main family car) has 175K on it. Still runs fine. Note they share many components with the D90.

There's no reason a solid, well-built vehicle shouldn't last indefinitely. In the long-term, serious accidents and/or rust will kill your rig. Everything else can be replaced or rebuilt. If you're serious about avoiding rust, there are several things you can do to slow or possibly prevent it.

The better you maintain your truck, the longer you'll go between replacing or rebuilding parts.

:lol These guys crack me up! "I saw a D-90 in Turks with 1 milllliioooon miles on it!" The truth is these engines USUALLY start to crap out at 100k. Now I know people get more out of them sometimes but that’s when the problems seem to get out of control. It’s an Aluminum block that has inherent over heating issues. That’s not a good recipe. But, the good news is, who cares! The engine is cheap to swap out for a rebuild or takeoff. If you are not afraid of spending some money then you will love your D-90. Good luck :)
