I wouldn't mind spending $500 for one of these but $1000 - $1500?! No way.

I wsa aware of the traditional looking ones that look like a tent:

but recently saw some that are in self-contained containers and pop straight up to expand:

I prefer the first type as they take up less rack space and open to the rear.

Anyone want to consider a group buy??? I doubt we can get it down to $500 but who knows...

Also look at the Tent Cot available from EE.
https://www.expeditionexchange.com/tentcot/

Supposidly there is a double sized version too but you may have to call or email them to find out more if info is not on their site about it. Have not heard a bad thing yet about the Tent Cot.

In the Misc. Chit Chat section below this is being talked about as well... It's the "Hannibal the Cannibal..." thread.

I was amazed at how simple/ basic the construction of my old roof top tent was.

Personally I think if someone were handy they could make one with little effort/cost/time.

I have both sizes of Tent Cot (regular and double). The Tent Cot concept is great: extremely fast to set up/take down, all four sides zip almost entirely open for great ventilation, up off the ground, rain fly, etc. The one downside is size: folded, they are still BIG. In fact, the wide version, which folds to 5' x 3' will NOT fit inside my D-90 at all. Another downside to the wide Tent Cot is there's a beam which runs lengthwise right down the middle of the cot. You've to sleep on either side of it, or cover it with a lot of padding.
