Hey guys, can someone help me out ASAP? I have my d-90 over at British 4x4 in Mission Viejo b/c of a rattle from underneath. When I am pulling up to light, slowing down etc.. there is a rattle from underneath. They believe it is a heat shield or my cat conv. any thoughts? cost + labor? I need some ammo in case this is gonna be a big fix!! :confused

If it is the heat shield my guess is the welds broke. Have them weld it back on shouldn't be more then $50 (at leats not around me). But normaly when a cat rattles it means the internals of the cat have goon bad. Then you are into more $$$$.

i just read about a guy who used the summit universal cat on a fix. Does anyone know about CA emissions with one of these in place?

Follow-up Post:

Or is re-builing the cats out here a legal option to spending the $600 on anew cats and a Y pipe?

Could this be a u-joint problem? My D90 makes a noise when decelerating from highway speeds. Sort of sounds like when you are off the shoulder on those grids.

i just experienced the exact same symptoms. the diagnosis was the cat converter in the y pipe was falling apart. i was told i need to replace the entire y pipe which is not cheap. there's also nothing wrong with just letting it contiue to rattle.
