1984 ROW 300tdi D90 - RHD

Hello all,
I’ve decided to sell my ROW 300tdi Defender 90. My reasons for selling the truck are simple. I have found another Tdi D90 that I’m going to purchase, and I can only have one (sayeth thy wife).

The truck is imported from Scotland. It arrived in the states in 2/2010. I have all the DOT and customs paperwork. I have in hand a clean and clear PA title.

This truck is in fantastic condition considering its age. The chassis, battery box, floor boards, rear cross member and bulk head are rust free. The motor is a 1998 Disco 300Tdi with the proper T-case, R380 Trans, drive shaft and axles. That also means that it has 4 wheel disc brakes. The chassis, frame and body have aprox. 107,000 miles on it. The motor, trans, t-case, drive gear have aprox 72,000 miles on them from what I was told, although I have no way of verifying that number. The entire interior is diamond plated, and while I haven’t pulled it up, all of the floor boards appear solid and rust free from the underside. The rear cross member is rust free and in great shape. It does look as though the truck had a lot of goodies on it that were removed prior to it being imported to the US. It drives straight and true. It starts strong, pulls strong, and stops strong. When I purchased this truck I drove it home at 70mph for 4hrs+.

What I’ve done with this truck:
Brand new Yokohama Geolanders - 265/75/16 – less than 50 miles on them
Sump was removed, cleaned, and new gasket installed
All filters changed, oil change
Feeder hoses replaced
New thermostat
New temp sender
New water pump
Brand new set of Polk Audio speakers

What I haven’t gotten to:
There is a small leak coming from the radiator

I was planning to do the drive/serpentine belt and timing belt because I don’t have any service history

The gauges and dash – Most of the gauges, including the speedo, are non-functional and the dash is showing its age. Included in the sale is a full 2002 TD5 dash including sound dampening materials, TD5 bindle with harness. I was planning on going with a VDO speedo and gauges. The truck has an electronic sender installed, so a VDO will hook right up. I will also include a brand new manual cable and the hardware if you want to go that route instead, just needs to be hooked up.

The air filter housing is cheap plastic and not proper. I am including a proper metal 300Tdi air filter housing and new filter, just needs to be installed.

The passenger side door has a bad hinge. I am including a brand new hinge, just needs to be installed.

I am also including a set of round-tube diamond plated side steps.

I will be washing and waxing the truck this weekend and will be taking more pics, so if there are any specific areas of interest let me know and I’ll snap them up.

Looking to get out of the truck only what I have into it: $11,000

VERY interested - I think I emailed you a while back from a Craigslist ad where you had some fuzzy pics of the truck?

What is up with the red paint underneath? I assume the chassis is from a red truck that had been painted horribly? :)

I get down that way a fair bit, maybe we could meet up in a week or two.

What is your human organs as payment policy? I don't need 2 kidneys anyway.

Hey Doug,
Wasn't me you replied to. This is the first sale post for this truck, never been on CL. Anyhow, feel free to hit me up via e-mail / PM and we can talk.

Also: it looks like the frame has been welded in the middle? Or am I seeing things?

------ Follow up post added September 2nd, 2010 02:20 PM ------

Left side rear bumpstop looks odd - crusty or has it been welded?

GreenRover
September 2nd, 2010, 01:23 PM
Don't think it's been welded, but I see what you mean in that pic. Will climb under again to night and verify cause I never noticed it before you said something, may just be the way it appears. There is welding in the rear, it has a new cross member.

And I very well may consider human organs ... have a wedding to pay for in 30 days.

Here's a shot of the portion of the frame that Doug was questioning. It was taken from the back side of it. Also included shots of the rear cross-member.

I'm happy to help. You could have someone closer come and check it out, then have it shipped to you. :)

Seems like an incredible deal for someone- kind of surprised its still for sale. I can't think of one US shop where you can even get a 300 tdi conversion for 11k ?

I'm trying to convince myself to fly out and drive it home if someone doesn't beat me to the punch.

I received a good question about the truck

"Just a quick question, is your Defender still having overheating problems or did you solve it? Did you end up replacing the head gasket? Thanks."

If you look through some of my old posts you'll see questions about the head gasket, radiator and over heating. As it turns out, it is just the temp gauge not working. If you hit a hard bump or even whack the dash the reading will change. My mechanic checked it all out with a infrared thermometer and the truck actually runs cool. It has an electric fan. I have since purchased an infrared thermometer and use it almost every time I get home from driving the truck, just to see. I haven't seen it go over 190F.

Also forgot to mention that the truck has an immobilizer & alarm that I've been wanting to remove as I think it's a PITA.

Any concerns about it making a 700 mile trip? Radiator, belts, anything else?

is it a v8 temp guage? I would bet you have the wrong one, if all else checks out ok. I received a good question about the truck

if the gauge jumps when you hit a bump that sounds like a poor ground to the temp gauge-simple fix

On your small radiator leak. Just recently had one on my radiator. Turned out one of the black zip ties holding the electric fan in place had cut through one of the little fins(I think this is what you would call it) on the radiator. It was causing a slow leak over time. Mechanic fab'd up a bracket guy to hold it in place. Might be worth looking into. He had said it was the first time he'd ever seen it happen but wasn't surprised that it had seeing as zip ties suck and he hates that they are what is supplied as mounting hardware with electric fans.

Anyway, good luck on the sale. The price is pretty solid. You can get a tdi 90 with a solid frame for about $6k. Add shipping and you're up to $7k-8k range. Add a paint job and you'll be closer to this. Then you'll have to add a radio. Perhaps new interior. Basically this is a good deal.

Hey all,
Thanks for all the feed back on the truck. I know that most of the outstanding issues with this truck are not huge and most are pretty simple fixes. That's why I feel it's a solid truck at a reasonable price. I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere, but I'm very mindful of the issues on my list. I have many interested parties and it looks like this will be licked in the next day or so. Thanks again!

I am no mechanic by any means, but I will be in Scranton all weekend if anyone wants MY honest opinion on this 90-
just thought I'd throw it out there.
Frank, are you around this weekend? I live in La Plume for most of the summer.

Is a 300tdi disco engine (in a Defender) easier to Convert to LHD than a 200tdi Disco engine (In a Defender)?

Disco and Defender engines are the same with the 300 except the late fly by wire automatic disco's

I was planning on waiting till after my wedding to revive this thread, but I had a few requests for some more pics so I figured I'd throw them up now. Pics show all areas for concern / rust. I tapped at all the spots when I took the pics and it's all surface stuff, nothing chewed through. The truck is also pretty dirty right now and I'm planning on washing / waxing as soon as I can, but I'm getting married in a few days. Will post pics when she's all cleaned up. Truck is still for sale. Any questions just hit me up.

I read through your sale post and the thread where you bought the RRC and this is the Defender you're looking for. If you're really driving the boat down the coast, why not stop by here and pick this truck up and use it to trailer the RRC home ;)? As sharp as that RRC is, I've got another Tdi in my sights.
