View Full Version : Tapping sound from brakes?

Guys, I am no professional mechanic but I am no slouch either. I have noticed that my '97 has a tapping sound coming from the front end. It increases speed with increased road speed. The noise instantly goes away when I touch the brakes.

My question is what the heck in the brakes or that general area could be responsible for a tapping sound? This is not what I would expect from worn brakes which might squeal or have a rattle sound but this is a very precisely rythmic tapping sound.

Any ideas??

I would pull the front wheels off and have a look, see if anything is caught in the breaks. Possibly the rotor is warped.

You may want to check out the gas tank. Sometimes I once had a clicking sound and turns out there was a rock in my tire treads, and a zip tie was hitting the tank. You may even wants to check the wheel weights are not should be hitting the brake shields or tie rod endses.

Wheel weights could be the case....good idea!! I do not think it is likely to be warped rotor though because I would think I would feel a pulsating in the pedal right?? Brakes feel and work fine. I will check this out when I get a day off this coming Wed.

No I have not...I have been too busy to actually look yet. I am not certain it is coming from the brakes themselves or not but hiitting the brakes makes the tapping go away somehow.

Wheel bearings loose. Could be cv but probably wheel bearings. Jack up vehicle, shake wheel by holding at 6 and 12 and if you can wiggle it then you know what it is.

Check the brake pad return springs. On my '95 Defender they are coil type springs.

I had the same problem with mine and all I had to do was stretch the springs out a little to stop the noise.
