Oil Change Screw-up

I purchased a 94 D90 and changed the oil the day after purchase. I did not rtfm and drained the oil, removed the oil filter, replaced the plug, replaced the filter and then added the new oil.

I then heard a slight tapping that lasted for about 10 minutes. I no longer hear the noise but I am worried that I damaged the engine???

Do I still need to prime the oil pump??

No. The above sequence is per the shop manual.

I thought it was drain oil, refill oil then change the filter?

Do I still need to prime the oil pump??:eek: on the sound, I hate it when I hear an engine tapping, my friend said his belt has been going for the last 200-300 miles, he asks me to listen to it, I said thats not the belt it is the engine, he was down 2 quarts and his motor only holds 2.8 quarts :eek: , well we filled it and after a few days it went away. He has been driving for over 2k and it is still fine

How long did the oil pressure light stay on if it did come on? By the sound of it for 10 min you were running with no oil pressure., not a good thing, I'm not to sure what you could check other then to make sure there isn't any metal in your oil.

The above sequence is not "per the manual". You're supposed to fill with oil before replacing the filter, in order avoid losing prime in the oil pump.

Did the low oil light stay on the whole ten minutes? If it's out, then the punp should be primed.

The oil light did not come on and the truck ran for 10 minutes on and off. When I heard it tapping I shut it down and restarted it a couple times.

Assuming the oil light is working ( ;) ), you should be OK.

Tapping is usually just the hydraulic valve lifters; the tapping goes away when they get filled back up and adjust themselves again. 'doesn't usually take that long, though.

Check the Oil. Is it Black? 10 min. after changing?
Did you go from a cheap oil to a high detergant oil?

This sounds exactly like what happened to me when I bought a CJ-5 15 years ago. The high detergant oil loosened all the crap in the motor and deposited it in the lifters. I had to replace the lifters and clean the inside of the block. The oil pan had a 1/2 inch of crap in it.:cry

If it runs and no longer taps it should be fine.

If you switched from dino to synthetic I would change the filter at 500-1000 mile intervals until it is not heavy with crap when you remove it. You can just top up you do not have to change it again, but I would change at 3000. I did this with my disco and by the time I was done the engine was clean where it had been gunked up do to by the book 7500 mile dino changes.
