Moving to UK, selling US D90

I just took a job with an investment bank in London. Already looking at trucks for when i get there in March, but need to sell my Cali truck first

Beautiful inside and out. Actually had a Rover tech in Marin offer me high 30's before the economy crashed. NEVER offroaded in it's life. The first owner was an antique dealer who put 71K miles on it from 1997 to 2004. The second owner was a wealthy finance professional who put 3500 miles on it over four years and put $15000 into the truck to make it perfect. I bought it from him in 2008 with 74K miles.

Clean Carfax, never wrecked, and the only mechanical issue is that the odometer only displays the mileage about half the time, but this is common with d90s and it still keeps accurate miles. I can get it repaired if you like for $250. See http://www.eastcoastrover.com/speedo.html for more details

Very few NAS vehicles made it here, i only know of two, so i guess it would have a good value., also if it made it here he could rebuild it to SVX spec when its here and take it back when he goes.

Haha, seriously? Look into what's needed for a Defender's headlamps to be changed. Of course it's legal. It's the same thing offered over here, just with better bits on it. That wasn't supposed to sound dickish. It's really easy to get a US spec Land Rover past the inspection here as long as you don't have janky shite with it like disabled ABS, etc. As long as vehicles are safe they'll pass inspection without any real issue.

Nope. It's fairly simple. I had my 98 Disco imported from the US. Had to get some brake work done but it passed without any problems. Advisories/comments due to the inspector's opinion regarding my RTE bumper and pedestrians, but still passable. The lights will just have to be re-aimed. You should already have the rear fog light, the rest of the inspection is just like most state inspections for general safety of the vehicle. From the looks of it, yours will sail through better than most. Since it was built here and is nearly identical to the local model it'll be a breeze. You'll probably also enjoy having LHD for traveling in Europe. All the NAS goodies plus auto box and V8 would certainly be popular.

Not so fast, this isn't like the US 25 yr exemption rule where you get a free pass on DOT and EPA pretty much as long as its original. He's effectively permanently importing a truck (on paper at entry anyway) into the UK that must be complient with UK regs. You're importing a truck that has to conform to the UK legislation for the year it was built and this truck was built for and sold in the US market not the UK. US and UK Discos are more similar than US and UK Defenders. Most of it is the same but NAS trucks do have some US sourced parts fitted. It really depends on how much of an arse the inspector wants to be.

Off the top of my head, NAS D90s don't have a rear fog so that will need to be added along with the dash warning lamp being wired in. Front parking lights (side lamps) are orange not white so the lenses may need to be changed. May need to rewire the front marker lamps on the fenders to work with the turn signals as there are no side indicators and these may be required for the year. Tires will need to be checked to make sure they have E codes and are not US only DOT models. State inspections if they exist are nothing like an MOT typically so a number of surprises might come up like brake bias and effectiveness, handbrake operation and effectiveness, etc. Any penetrating rust within so many inches of body mounts, main structure points or seat belt anchor points, etc., etc. If the windscreen or any of the front glass has been changed it needs an E code. So do the wipers and mirrors (Windshield mounted mirror is a US part, that's why the mounts are different). Any extra lights or other US sourced add ons need an E code if fitted. Little stuff like TRE Boots and suspension bushes need to be checked.

Best option if you want to take the NAS is have one of the UK Forum members scan and send you over a copy of an MOT Pass/Fail Check Sheet and then go through it to make sure you don't get caught out by the little stuff.

Of course you might get a 'happy' inspector and sail right through but then again you might not if he wants to go by the book.

THEN you get the joy of finding out how much that Auto V8 costs to run in the UK AND how much Land Rovers really leak. But parts will be cheap (well the non-NAS ones anyway).... :)

Pointless taking a NAS to the UK ... sell it here, use the money to buy something much newer and diesel ... running a V8 in Europe, even working for an investment bank won't be fun! LHD in the UK is impractical and for the occasions you go to Europe it's not worth the hassle.

If you get your asking ... (and I think the price is reasonable! ) you won't be far off a brand new 90 if that's what you want.

A NAS in the UK is no more than a curiosity for a very limited market.

You have to remember that this is a 13yr old vehicle. If you are used to putting cars through an MOT then its no big problem to check and take care of any small items. Not so easy when you have no experience of the test and what to watch out for.

I am not saying it is impossible or even that much hassle, just that the OP be aware before he sets out of exactly what he's getting into should he choose to export it. Not so much fun to get it over there then have it held up on some now expensive little technicality that he could have fixed easily before putting it on the boat.

Extra lights would be things like Spots, fog or other Aux lights. If they are fitted then they must have e codes. Most will, I just suggested he check.

As for my info, try 32 yrs in the UK before heading over here. I've put my share of vehicles through an MOT and met my share of snotty inspectors. I own a NAS defender and have owned UK ones previously. They may have originated in the same Solihull factory and be similar but they are not the same.

The plan is still to sell if anyone wants to check it out. I don't plan on coming back soon and would rather buy a left hand drive (french model) and update to a quasi-SVX package than lug this one all over.

I have to sign my offer letter in the next two weeks (still working out a few small details), so i would like to sell in the next 2 months or so.
