If i don't go to the Winter Romp I would love to join you guys. Which trail were you considering? If you end up driving up to ME, contact Rugbier, he wanted to get a roof rack from ECR.

We will be doing Meadow Knob, AKA Flagpole. Very stock friendly for Puma's. :)

Harsh :) Sort of hoping you guys were thinking of something like Potts Mountian. I haven't been there in a long time but it might be a good idea someday. They have cabins at nearby Douthat state park which could be fun... http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/dou.shtml

rrc.swb

I've never been to Potts and do not know the terrain.

I suggested Flagpole so "stokers" (like my soccer mom/mall cruiser DI) could go :)

Potts Mountain has been part of the RAOV summer Rally the last two years, if you are looking to return they should be headed back there next summer. IT is harder than it was in years past, the rocky areas are more washed out.

Thanks Chuck, I bet it's been two years then I'm embarassed to say. Last time I poked a hole in my front diff on one of the ledges. Nothing an oil rag and duct tape didn't fix. That's a sweet place.

no, but I have a map somewhere. I know parts are closed during the winter, not sure what is open at the moment. It is a public rail so I know others plans a trip there from time to time. Last time we went a DII blew a diff and I had to do the last 1/4 trail while pulling it through on a kinetic strap.

I'll keep the run to Flagpole, just to have more people join us.

Not a lot of people want to damage their trucks...

Not everyone has a "heavily upgraded" rig... like mine... roflmfao (I'm being funny). :) The best mod I have is the RTE sticker in the back... :grin

Potts MTN is closed annually from January 1st to March 31st. Last year it did not open until late-April because of excessive erosion that needed more time to heal. I expect this year will be no different since clubs (like ROAV) take larger groups to the trails, yet never come back to do their part in repairing, maintaining, or cleaning up the trails.

If you guys are hitting FR-85 through Meadow Knob and then down Union Springs, enjoy it. They're trying to close that loop. Forester Elwood Burgess is determined to have it closed down. Erosion, trespassing on private land at the top of Union, trash, trail blazing...they're all to blame.

What a shame. The selection of trails really sucks in this area.

rrc.swb

As we did on our last run... We need to bring bags and cleanup the trails.

I hear you're running for a seat within the club. I hope you get elected because it's going to be great fun posting what a fuck up you are.

I doubt I'll do a trail ride since I'm on call for work that weekend, but if the group meets afterwords for dinner and/or drinks, I'd be game. I know Gus' favorite place in Harrisonburg is the Artful Dodger (http://www.artfuldodger.org/abc07.html), but I don't take it in the butt so that place is not for me. But Daves' Taverna (http://www.davestaverna.com/) would be good, or even the bar at the Local Chop House (http://www.localchops.com/).

A few other suggestions would be:
Union Station (http://www.unionstationdowntown.com/site/)

Cally's (http://www.callysbrewing.com/)

Dan,
perhaps you can stop sucking Bubba's cock for a second, and come to the ABM, make your voice heard the right way.

I might take a seat on ROAV ( not sure yet, nor I have enough people that like me enough to vote me in ), unlike you, I will try to make suggestions the right way and not be a keyboard whore as you are.. but no matter what , still like you :)

Gus,
Sounds like you've been talking to Chuckles Yarborough too much. Chuckles has been drinking the ROAV kool-aid for several years now and is more clueless now than he ever was.

If you want some real insight as to what really goes on within ROAV, give me a call or PM me, I've got several dozen e-mails I'd like to share with you.

But please, enlighten me as to what "the right way" is to present your point(s) to ROAV! And don't say by going to the ABM because that's bullshit. Why would I pay $25.00 just to attend the meeting, plus whatever the hotel room costs, plus the expense to get there and time off; when ROAV pays a fee to have working web forum the officers and Board members regularly participate in? Whats the point of the BBS? ROAV communicates to the membership via their website, so why can't folks be heard through the BBS?

Don't worry about having friends to get you elected to a seat on ROAV. You'll get a seat. Bring someone with you and they'll get a seat, too. The only qualification you need to get elected is to show up. If they haven't already, they'll beg you to take a seat. I suspect they have already.....

I'm not going to the ABM. I don't support ROAV like that. If I went to the ABM that would mean I support ROAV. I don't. Not as long as that fat ass John Tackley is involved anyway.

Call me, though. I think you need to see the other side of the bullshit Chuckles has been feeding you.

Nope, the carrying around signed forms at all times in your vehicle.
EVERYONE attending needs to have these forms at all times.
Who are these to be presented too? Do you need to present your papers on command? If you don't carry your papers with you will you be shot as a spy? I've wheeled with OCC before and never had to have any forms. But at the time I was member of another club that never requires forms.
Talking about prepared, I went on the Valentines day run a couple of years ago with OCC. Guess who had the only chain saw?

Look, put your big boy pants on for a minute. This is the first trail ride Pedro is leading, and he is just following the rules. Yes OCC requires non-members to bring waivers and medical forms with you and hand them to the trail leader. If you were not asked to do this before, then that person was not following the rules. I am guilty of doing this myself. But that doesn't make it silly, or a bad thing, or anything else that warrants your stupid reaction.

You can go to the OCC site and read about this yourself if interested.

Nope, the carrying around signed forms at all times in your vehicle.

Who are these to be presented too? Do you need to present your papers on command? If you don't carry your papers with you will you be shot as a spy? I've wheeled with OCC before and never had to have any forms. But at the time I was member of another club that never requires forms.

Huh? What's silly? Being prepared and responsible?x2

Ok, I'll explain.

One form is a liability waiver which you have to sign. It says you won't sue OCC if you get hurt etc. Standard stuff. How do you propose this signed form gets given to the club? In person is quite reasonable - do you find that silly?

The other form is a medical form to better give you assistance if you get hurt. You can list medications you are alergic to, give a point of contact etc. You keep this in your truck so if you hurt youself, someone can find it - do you find that silly?

And are these so onerous (or "silly") that they are reasons to not join a group of like minded people wheeling? THAT I find silly :)

How about you go look at the form and see if you could fit more than 10% of the info on a bracelet. It's a lot more useful than a bracelet.

Virginia: Addition to Earlier Alert Today, Governor McDonnell Issues Directive
to Allow Lawful Carry in State Parks!

Earlier today, the National Rifle Association sent out an incomplete alert about Governor Robert F. McDonnell's recent changes to Virginia's Administrative Code.

On January 14, Governor McDonnell issued a directive to the Department of Conservation and Recreation to cease enforcement of §4VAC5-30-200 (http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+4VAC5-30-200) which prohibits open carrying of firearms in State Parks and has immediate effect.

In September of 2008, as Attorney General, Bob McDonnell issued an opinion (http://www.oag.state.va.us/OPINIONS/2008opns/08-043-Cuccinelli.pdf) that the Department of Conservation and Recreation lacked specific legislative authorization to further regulate firearms.

In order for the regulatory change to conform to his previous opinion (http://www.oag.state.va.us/OPINIONS/2008opns/08-043-Cuccinelli.pdf) and current law, Governor McDonnell also directed that §4VAC5-30-200 is exempt from the normal Executive branch review process.

LOL, whatever Dan. Like you were coming anyway. Is this a southern VA thing? :finger

You're right that I probably would not come anyway. There are a number of reasons for that. First, I'm on call for work that day and need to stay within reasonable proximity of town. Second, I live here and have rode those trails since I was 15 years old and know them like the back of my hand. Those trail do not excite me unless they're covered in several inches, or feet, of snow. In other words, they're boring. I'm glad we have the trails that we have and I do all that I can to keep what we have open. But lets face it, those trails are boring.

That's not to mean I do not enjoy those trails. I love those trails. Those trails allow you to get away from everything and offer a very nice place to just go for a drive on. In the Spring and Fall those trails are really something to see. During hunting season I use those trails regularity and I'm appreciative that they're there.

But this time of year everything is dead. It's brown. Its been so warm that there is no snow or ice to spice things up or create a winter scene worth seeing.

If there was some snow on the ground, or if it were the time of year when the Laurel is in bloom, I'd be a lot more likely to find someone to cover my shift, or take a chance on getting called in to work and hit the mountains anyway. But it's not. I would be much more interested in sitting at a bar drinking beer talking to random people about random things.

I did not know this was an OCC trail ride. I think your "papers" are a bit funny, but I like the fact a club is setting an example of how to go prepared into the woods. This is what clubs are about -- teaching the Newb about preparedness and trail etiquette. Obviously, drinking on the trail is not a good trail etiquette. I would not believe in teaching Newbs it's okay to drink on the trail, in fact, I'd teach otherwise. So if I'm not going to promote drinking on the trail with Newbs, I'm also not going to participate in teaching Newbs how to go to the bar and get a few drinking before driving home on the street. If it's not okay in the mountains before driving around, why is it okay in a bar before going home?

This is not to say I do not enjoy a drink on the trail, and it does not mean I do not enjoy a drink before going home. Under the right circumstances I do, and other times I do out of bad judgment. But if I were in a club, which I'm not, I would not teach this behavior and I'm not going to push it on your club.

Should I ever want to participate in one of your club activities, I'll be sure to get my mom to sign a permission slip, though.

I've got one, and I think a few others do as well. But that's a good point, I didn't realize that was a prerequisite...though keep in mind that in Virginia, open carry is totally legal as well so I don't see why that wouldn't also apply. And, also keep in mind that due to the recent change in the law this past July it actually is LEGAL to have a firearm in either your glovebox or any "closed container" in the vehicle without a conceal carry permit (in Virginia that is):

MOTOR VEHICLES AND VESSELS (House Bill 885)
For those who do not have a CHP, starting July 1 they can have a loaded handgun with them concealed in their motor vehicle or vessel as long as the handgun is secured in a container (such as a zipped bag, closed gun case, closed briefcase, etc.) or in a compartment (glovebox, console, etc.).

NOTE: Remember that if you don't have a CHP, you generally can't carry a handgun in such a closed container OUTSIDE of your motor vehicle or vessel.

On federal lands federal law prevails and the feds have an agreement with VA to allow carry in the NF but only with a CCP when no hunting season is in.
The second exception to this law allows people with a concealed weapon permit to carry a loaded, concealed, handgun either on their person or in their vehicle while on National Forest. This does not apply if the person is engaged in a primitive weapons season or chase only season.
http://www.fs.fed.us/outernet/r8/gwj/general_info/faq.shtml#firearms
Because of the amount of time I spend in the NF this is one of the main reasons I got my permit.

For those looking for the easiest reciprocity CCW, Pennsylvania is a $26 fee to send in the app and you get a full carry permit that then gives you VA/etc. Link is above, and they generally get the permit back to you within 7-10 days after you send the paperwork in.

Never let them see you sweat! Plus, I had Pedro along so I didn't even have to get out of the truck...

Ed, pics look great, btw.

Two questions:

-Jeff, truck looks good. What happened to your winch?

-What kind of dog is that grey puppy?

It looks like a blue pit bull to me. And damn, that tan one is massive.

Not to overstep my bounds, but I believe Jeff's winch has been on his workbench waiting for a rebuild for quite awhile.

It went from Charles garage to Jeff's work bench... It's like the Equipe Diff guard.

Pedro, not to change the subject but I heard you are doing a Paddocks order. I may add a diff guard or two onto there, been having trouble finding one for my Salisbury rear (though I'm not sure if I'm going to go with a Qt or the one Paddocks has). When are you placing the order?

I have other things going on and I'm pussy footing on that one... I'm ordering over $1k in crap that I don't need.

Goose and Doug S need stuff also, so I don't know. Maybe I'll let the person ordering the big stuff be the lead guy and I just tag along too. With nut's and bolts.

For the record I had nothing to do with the QT diff guard saga. Jeff should chime in but I believe he sold or is selling his winch. The one in the box on the floor of his garage is a partially rebuilt 8247 that you helped me with sand blasting, now destined for the lelo truck.

If we had a decent trail leader he'd post a trip report and explain this kind of stuff. On the way up we ran into a group from the "poor x 4" club down in the Norfolk area. They didn't know the area and were looking for a friend they were supposed to meet up with. We told them our plans and they tagged along with us. One of them had these dogs and they were very well trained and quite sweet. The tan one was trained to fetch beer from a fridge - my kind of dog!

Remind me how this is any different from any of your other orders?

wouldn't any inexpensive Dana 60 cover work?

I may want to add some flip-up side steps (yes, i talk about them all the time, haha) now that i bent the sh*t out of my 1 remaining one (pretty sure it was THIS (http://media.backpurge.com/02222011/OB3D5789.jpg) rock) , I have an excuse to replace with ones not rusted in the down position.

Glapin is correct...I have a Milemarker 8000 that works fine but I stole a Warn 8274 from his garage (and moved the box to my garage!). Hopefully the 8274 build will be completed in the next couple of weeks and then I will be letting the Milemarker go...it will be officially up for sale soon but if anyone wants it, $250 takes it! Replaced a solenoid and has a brand new cable

Don't waste your $$ on a diff guard, go with a welded steel HD Dana 60 cover. They are all over eBay.

It's true, we were re-enacting that episode of Top Gear where they had the driver blind-folded and the passenger gave all of the verbal commands. I did forget to mention that.
