View Full Version : Electric Cooling Fan 97 info needed.

Just was wondering if anybody had any info on what triggers the Electric fan on a 97 D90 to come on. Mine is seized up, I am going to replace it but I can't find any blown fuses? I just want to make sure after I replace it, It will come on again with the factory settings. Many thanks for any response.

It should kick in when you turn on the AC.

On a 97 the ECU runs the show. There is a trinary switch that runs that fan. Unlike a lot of other trucks, the fan is not suppose to run whenever the A/C is on (according to the dealership). It is suppose to run when the A/C system reaches some insane high pressure or when the ECU thinks that the engine is going to overheat (above 235 degrees). The engine officialy overheats at 240 degrees.
It does not turn on with the A/C as Mike stated on a 97

Of course, a little temp switch added to the radiator could change all that :)

You can also cut the wiring, add a relay and wire it up to come on when ever the A/C is on. I think that little fan retails for about $250. You would be better off getting some after market fan to use for supplemental cooling or go with the total electric set up that is listed in the custom mod section. That is what I am going to do this fall when the temperature in my garage dips into double digits! (Yesterday it was 124 degrees at 3:00 P.M. with the door shut. The record is 139 degrees! :sunny )

You can buy the original fan direct from the manufacturer - Spal
VA11-AP7/C-57S FAN (10") 79.4500

Under 90$ shipped to your door - just need to cut of the generic connector and put on the one from your dead fan. Or you could spend $200+ on the same fan with the right connector already installed!
