Hey everybody,
My name is Max.
First of all, I would like to say that I’m happy I found this forum, I spend a lot of time on this forum and I already learned a lot!
I always wanted to have a Defender when I was a little kid, however, moving to the US kind of ruined this dream. That’s why I ended up with a 1995 Range rover classic.
I love this car, but I still miss the Defender…
So…I finally found an original 1984 Camel Trophy 110 in Europe. My dream came true.
As this was a vehicle from the German team in the 1984 Brasil event, I contacted one of the German drivers (Volker Lapp). He was very helpful and send me pictures of his 1984 album. Thanks to his help, we were able to confirm that it car was indeed the German vehicle.
According to what I have seen, the truck is in relatively good shape (for a 1984). It is at my house in Europe right now. But the moment I have some money, it will be shipped to the US.
This summer however, I will be restoring this car. In Europe or America. That’s why I need some advice. As it is for the most part still a completely original Camel Trophy vehicle, I would like to keep it that way.
The first thing on my list is to completely clean the defender, however, I have no idea what to do after that.
So what would you guys advice here? I would love to completely strip it down and restore it, but then it wouldn’t be a Camel Trophy vehicle anymore…
How could I improve or restore this defender without ruining its unique background?
Thanks,
Max

Give it a good wash and tune up, then if possible leave it alone.

Fix any rust and leave all the dents, dings, and scratches.
No SD cage? Curious.

84 did not have the full cage. I would just abate the rust and treat the inside of the frame with waxoyl and do basically nothing else. If you actually intend to drive it, I would consider pulling the engine and trans and swapping for a 200tdi and later lt77 and saving the originals.

She's a beaut. sure is nice, I would almost hate to add any of my own dings to it off road.

By not being obsessed with it as a collector's item. Rather, by enjoying it and driving it, since you have always dreamed of having a Defender, and adding your own stories to its already colorful history. And if there are dings and scrapes that happen along the way, don't worry, it can take it. You can repair and rebuild things without destroying their character. But sometimes it takes more patience, creativity, and a more nuanced level of understanding. A Defender was never meant to be perfect and sit in a hermetically sealed box.
That said, a 200tdi would only further add to your enjoyment while the collectible, valuable original lump can sit in a nice padded crate somewhere out of the weather. :)

2.25 or 2.5 diesel? Is this that one the Italian guy was selling?

Congrats! Thats a pretty awesome find.
I saw this 110 in person at Classic Defenders when I went up to Holland on a Landy hunting trip. The old 2.5NA fired right up in the middle of winter. I do not have the time or the requisite skills to take on a restoration, and I wanted a 110 I could build up. I'm looking forward to seeing this restoration in progress.

You lucky bastard. One life...and you've started living it. What that 110 needs is another couple hundred thousand km's by you.

9 model years newer. That 93 isn't eligible for entry here.

I would think you could bring the 93 in as a show and display car.

extremely hard to get for vehicles where more than 500 were made or the model is still in production. IE would have to be very historically signifigant like have done a circumnavigation etc.

Are you saying a camel trophy isn't significant? Lame

The Camel Trophy wasn't legit until they started getting serious in '98 by using Freelanders.

its an uphill argument. I'm just stating what DOT's "guidance" is on applying for a show and event import waiver. You are allowed 2500 miles per year max. If the production numbers exceeded 500 or if the model is still in production per DOT it "would have to be highly historically signifigant".
Again its an uphill argument and probably not one that would end favorably.
The other one I get a lot of emails about is "importing for off road use only". They will only consider this if the vehicle was "never meant for use on the highway by the manufacturer". Ie-also not going to happen.

Is there somebody on this forum who owns a Camel Trophy vehicle?
Or is there somebody here who already restored one?
It would be really helpful to talk to a person with this experience

I had one, and have a buddy who has one currently- feel free to pm me.
Pls do not restore- just drive and enjoy...
a great source is the CT owners club- you will need all your info and it will need to be confirmed, but worth the effort...
