D90 Rally truck?

New owner here of a 97 BRG ST with a fiberglass top and about 85k miles. Truck is solid with minimal rust issues and has been well maintained. I've been lurking here and wanted to get some experienced feedback now that the truck is actually in the driveway. My plan is to turn the D90 into a truck able to run a 9 day North African rally with minimal of available mechanical assistance. Reliability will be key as there are no support crews during the day. Some things I'm considering: lift kit, suspension, 2nd gas tank, exhaust, intake, bigger tires, seats, underbody protection, lights. I've read some of the threads about engine swaps but don't know that I want to undertake it if enough can be beefed up on existing V8 to get up and over the big dunes. Need to be able to handle rough terrain at moderate speeds with out anything breaking, get up and over mid sized boulders, make it through all types of sand and be nimble enough to navigate fields of camel grass mounds. Think it's feasible?

Import a winch challenge truck from the UK and use that as a base. A NAS ST is both too valuable and needs too much changing to be viable IMHO.

I would get a hold/look at their threads of Buckon37 and the other guys that have heavily modified their 90's for desert terrain.

Good point, don't waste a NAS truck on this project. You can bring over a good donor/ base vehicle for under $10k and use that extra money you save to build up the truck.

They've built a lot of trucks for the sort of thing you're planning.
Unless the turns are very tight a 110 with the rear overhang shortened/removed might be a better base to start from - more stable with less fore/aft pitching and more space to add fuel tanks etc.
Devon 4x4 did have a very capable 110 desert challenge truck a while ago.

Absolutely
Maybe even a basket case Series, but don't use an NAS.
