I'm away from the workshop manual and a computer. What's the recommended fluid for Series I trannys?

GL4 gear oil. NOT GL5 it eats the yellow metal. How are you posting if you are away from a computer?

Isn't the same as for SII, 75-90 wt?

Ron is right about the GL-4. I personally like the Amsoil for that reason.

Rumor has it that the newer GL5 formulations don't eat the yellow metal like it did when GL5 first came out.
At least that's what Castrol Heavy Duty (formerly Drydene) told me when I rang them. YMMV.

I have heard that GL5 with an MT1 designation is safe for brass. True?

I'd rather run a modern oil... as long as it does not just leak out:)

Well, I was second guessing myself so called Castrol and they said their GL-5 is not recommended for units that have yellow metal. Though the person didn't seem to be speaking with confidence, so another call later may get a different answer. I guess to be safe, stick with GL-4. Which is difficult to find in dino oil.

It's a very confusing subject and I suspect the oil companies like keeping it that way. Basically it comes down to the EP additives used in both GL4 and GL5 and what corrosive effect they have on yellow metals. GL5 has more EP additives but it still is almost impossible to find out just how corrosive these additives are unless the oil company specifically provides a test result.

Answer: Nissan recommends a GL-4 type gear lubricant for your Pathfinder. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube (http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Fully_Synthetic_Gear_Lube_75W-90LS.aspx) is an API GL-5 gear oil and would not be recommended for your manual transmission.

I ran Drydene/Castrol ESGL 85W140 GL-5 in my Series Rovers for 10 years or more with no noticeable ill effects (before I knew about the supposed risks of GL-5), but I'd never suggest someone else do that because of all the claims of GL-5 eating yellow metal.
