tranny rebuild

i am clue!!!less!! when it comes to the transmision.i have mine out right now and want to have some then done with it before i put it back in. it has over 100k miles on it. i saw rds (rovers down south) has rebuilts for $1550 and after shipping probably over $1700. they have a rebuid kit for $450 i was just woundering are all those little parts worth it (i know rds always has pretty good deals) and what would it cost to have a shop install those parts. thanks for the help!!

When I had to replace my T-case it would have cost more to have someone rebuild it then it would cost to buy a rebuilt unit. Also if you buy a rebuilt one from RDS then you are getting one rebuilt from someone who is rebuilding them all the time not someone who is rebuilding a Land Rover Tranny for the first time. Oh and after looking at my manual I would not try to rebuild it myself without a shop to work in.

George is also pretty good on a warranty. You can bury yourself without someone there to help you that knows a tranny very well. Good Luck.

yeah i wasnt planning on trying that one my self! but do you think i could buy his rebuild kit and have a local shop rebuild it?

That is a good option also. It all comes down to price I imagine. If you have a shop you trust and they can do it for under $1550 then you could do that. Most shops charge about $70 an hour labor so it should be cheaper. I wish I knew a shop close to you.

theres not much close to me thats rover related. maybe the nebraska lr dealership and thats about it! does anyone know if that rebuild kit is worth the $$$.

It is but do not go to the dealer. That is asking to get bf'd.

i was planning on going to a tranny shop here that says they specialize in 4x4

The thing is that if it needs the synchro hubs or even just one synchro hub or the mainshaft is worn it is no longer economically rebuildable if you are paying for labor.

I have been real busy this week. Did you get it sorted with scotty? I have not had a chance to call over there.

As far as R380s I have a different view that the rest of the world.

If its my truck (in which second synchro is slow) I live with it until, well until forward progress ceases, then I will DIY it and put in 4 balk rings (2nd and 3rd) and two seals (input and output) and the input bearing and call it good enough.

Otherwise I would buy NEW. Because on remans I get the feeling that someone else did what I said I would do above, maybe I am wrong but parts are so $$$$ for them I don't see how else it could be done.

I think the R380s are serious bank new genuine, $2500 or so. If you have a few months I could rebuild yours for you (to whatever spec you wanted) or I could see if I could get one of the techs I know to do it sooner. it is not hard, and the "special" tools it says you need you don't really need.

Personally if it has no real issue I would run it the way it is.

ron thanks for all the helpful info! drained the tranny fluid tonight after i talked to you and when i pulled the tranny plug it had a pretty spike ball on it. is this a high dollar decoritve plug or is it bad news.just woundering if this is normal or should i worry?or like you said dont worry adout it tell it craps out.here is a pic, i thought it was metal shaved spike like bits but went to pull them off and it seemed like grease like substince

Normal,--probably some wear on the hubs but if it shifts fine, there is no concern.

I remember reading in LRO that it was pretty normal for the drain plug to look like that when changing the fluids, in a feature they did on servicing one of their Discos. As a matter of fact, they had a pic that looked just like yours.
