I thank you for the offer. There's plenty of room at the house, which is waterfront with all amenities save for computer connectivity. I get two or three bars of 3G on my iPhone. There are 4 kayaks.
I am free the weekend after MAR onwards. Maybe Columbus Day weekend we can do the demolition on both, which will be extremely helpful. The place is about and hour and forty five minutes away near Cambridge MD on the Eastern Shore. Thanks.

That's 2.5 hours from here so 5 hours of driving for a day trip. With my current workload to finish my garage project and the perpetual list of rover projects I doubt I will be able to assist anytime soon because I can't spare more than a day at a time and I'm not sure I'm willing to drive 5 hours to help for a day :). But who knows. remind me closer to the time and I'll see. Columbus day weekend is doubtful for sure.

If you come pull the stuff it's yours. I don't want the hassle of selling/shipping off used parts. Tailgate is OK, just needs some minor attention. I think the heated glass is not heating, otherwise very usable. Interior is typical; all the seating good except for the driver's seat bottom. carpets need cleaning. Headliner was done once but it's saggy again. Console not too good. Wood pieces generally good, save for window switch panel.
There is overnight accommodations, as I believe that the trip from Raleigh to Cambridge will take you about 8 hours each way.

So I'm looking thru the Defender parts catalog looking for the heater control valve for a 2 or 300 tdi and I see nothing. It appears that the heater always has engine coolant flowing through it regardless of where the dash control is set. I guess the controls are used to open a flap on the heater box, there by allowing warm air to be blown into the cab via the blower motor. I guess I have shin burner mentality about these things as the Series trucks had a control valve on the engine that opened and closed to control the flow of hot coolant in the heater.
Looking for a Unified Theory about heating the 109 project.

Wait...are you sure Doug? My heater box has two wires and 2 cables going into it. The wires obviously for the blower motor, and one cable for the recirc/"fresh air shutoff", and the other, I assumed was for the hot/cold setting?
There is a control for the flaps in the kneebox (the one used to control airflow from either the windshield vents, or the windshield vents and feet) but that's not the one I'm talking about.

Yup, leaning toward that solution, but I'm kinda not keen on holing the wing, especially cuz the "Diesel Powered" badge goes where the hole would be.
jaygoss
September 28th, 2011, 08:16 PM
How about a Kodiak Mk I style intake on the inside of the passenger wing/radiator panel area? (see link). Better yet you could do it in the style of a later Kodiak where the intake hose runs inside the engine bay down the the radiator panel. I would bet Ike Goss of Pangolin might have parts for this. You may even be able to use the heater core/blower from a new RN Mansfield and route the hoses like you would for a Kodiak. I'm wondering if you could rotate the heater/blower 180 degrees so the intake faces toward the engine bay (instead of the passenger wing). You could then attach an elbow to the intake, attach a dryer hose to that and run down the inside of the engine bay (passenger side) to the radiator panel just under the passenger side light for fresh air. I went with the Mk I style as it's rare and was original to my Series II.

Loving the pics Bill. Having a tractor around sure helps. We had an old Case that barely worked but my old man would get it running for various jobs. Once my brothers and I got bigger, it was easier just getting us to move stuff like pickup beds.
The Designa Chassis could be a good move depending on how cost. Once you figure the time and sweat to get the LWB stripped and to and from the galvy house might be close. There is a lot to be said to have ready to bolt parts on hand. Even with the smaller projects I've been doing, the clean, strip, grind, cut, primer, paint parts of the job take by far the longest.

November 30th, 2011, 08:26 AM
I had a chance to strip down the lift gate and rear tailgate last evening. I bought all this from another forum member. I ran into a couple small things. First of all the galvanized steel inner plate for the tailboard is hopelessly warped. Probably from galvanizing. I will have to do what I can to get it to lay flat but don't have much hope.
The upper is pretty corroded. I peeled off the skin and it is in fair shape and the frame has a pretty good amount of rust. The latch mechanism was grimy.
I will take all of this to the stripper. It will clean up but I might as well have gotten 'unrestored' bits since it's all going back to clean metal anyway.
The attachment brackets have been modified so that they are no longer "handed" which isn't a big deal but is one of those things that you wish the PO hadn't done. Having the original NLA ones would have been better of course.
Lotsa holes, some certainly unnecessary ones along the upper tailgate bottom edge that are going to have to be filled somehow.
Oh well, live and learn. Moving on...
------ Follow up post added November 30th, 2011 09:33 AM ------
Doug I haven't gotten a final bill yet. Even then they don't break it down by parts, they charge by the job lot. I was told it'll be somewhere near 3 grand all together for everything, which is a significant amount of work they are doing. Roofs (2) tub wings bulkhead breakfast floors seatbox t pieces doors bonnet tailgate rear door and a gazillion bits of trim supports and misc whatsis.
I had to take all the skins off the doors and anything steel that was connected to aluminum had to be disconnected, so my labor is probably going to equal theirs, money-wise.
One thing that will save you some time is to make an itemized list with check boxes and give them a copy as you drop off the stuff they will go down the list and be sure they have a record of whats in the lot.
It took me over two hours to do this all by hand when I first went there. If I had known.....

So in your checklist, how the hell do you describe small items to them in terms they would understand. I mean, who knows what a liftgate hinge bracket looks like. I'd imagine in a perfect world you'd have a picture of it and include the weight and dimensions :)
I've often wondered if there is any software for doing a rebuild. Something to help keep track of all the parts, and dependencies...

Actually a plastic bin is more important than a checklist. What you bring in the bin goes back in the bin. A software that would install rivets would be more help I think.

December 18th, 2011, 04:19 PM
Update
All metal stripped and ready to go to galvy, except for the bulkhead and the t pieces, both of which need some work first. The bulkhead got some attention today, but it was not much due to the fact that i just don't have a clear picture of how much demolition to do. I have new metal parts coming from the UK which will allow me to plan the exact surgical process needed. For now it's just sitting on some sawhorses and waiting for a box to arrive.
The T pieces need to have the bottom curled lip restored. The ones for a 110 don't match up quite.
Speaking of boxes, this kind of pursuit really brings home the cardboard. I made a run to the recycling center. Filled the RR with all my flattened boxes. Lordy.
So, with the cold weather here my next thing is to rebuild the LT230 on my workbench, refurb the bulkhead, and get all the steel to galvy.
o2batsea
December 21st, 2011, 06:58 AM
Limp noodle sound Well the door posts that I ordered, which go all the way up the side of the bulkhead to the second hinge, arrived yesterday.
They are in BritPart bags, which sent up red flags right off. Upon inspection they are the right shape, but they are fabricated and not pressed like the original. That means some amount of clean up as the shoulder bend is full of grinder scars. In addition, they are powder coated, so that has to be stripped before anything else as the BH is getting galvy when finished. Must be all clean steel.
o2batsea
December 28th, 2011, 07:01 AM
I'm sure it has been mentioned, but the one piece heavy duty cross shaft for the LT230 diff is an awfully nice bit of kit. I just installed it last night and I think it's how they should have made it in the first place.
If I have one complaint about the Ashcroft LT230 rebuild kit, it is that they do not include new snap rings. Minor thing, but for how much they cost it's not a big expense.

Found the MM adapter kit that comes with new solenoid valve, the hydro fittings for the LR steering pump, hoses and a remote control on the web for 345 and added a coupon code I found (googled) for another ten percent off with free shipping. So, fully kitted MM 10K hydraulic winch for roughly $600.

Played with the winch over the w/e. Turns out that I didn't need the entire adapter kit, that the solenoids are good on the winch and that the thing is more or less ready to bolt on and go. Even the cable is in good condition, although I'd prefer to have synthetic rope. The adapter kit does provide hydraulic hoses, and the wired remote for the solenoids. I'm thinking I'll return it since it is more than I need.

Not unusual was the big nail subbing for a bolt on the panhard rod bracket. The thing needs a few mods for it to work for my project, but it is a heck of a lot better than getting one from England, and it came with lots of goodies.

Did you get my email?
I want my nail back. ;) The panhard kept dragging on the floor so that was my tempory solution. It has been there for 8-10 years or so.
I have the fourth matching yellow wheel and a bunch of other stuff here at my place for you.

Yup got your email. Just haven't moved the pics over to my regular computer. I want to send them to you via email, and my iPhone is barfing on them.
Need to do another sweep of your property.

Sway bars or no sway bars? I wonder. I guess if it's going to be driven on road it should have sway bars with disconnects. I would want to be able to remove the disconnected sway bars tho, so that engineering issue needs a solution.

It's been done. But no sway bars is the way to go

The Rostyle (early RR 2 door steel) wheels just arrived today. They will go to the stripper, and then on to galvy and paint. So cool. Certainly not everyone's taste but they are definitely the wheel for a retro coiler hybrid.

Thinking about it, these wheels are the perfect candidate for another home brew Jeffrey Dahmer bucket. Save the stripper for the really awful jobs.

Check the size of the center hole. One of the sizes (dont remember if its smaller or larger) allows you to run the alloy center cap if you would like.
The only downside to the rostyles is that you have to take the wheel off to pull the axle. But that is the same as running alloys.

Many thanks to Briggs for the visuals. Just imagine there's a 2A 109 wagon where the blue 2 door Rangie body is and you get the picture. Oh and there wouldn't be any bit of Welsh landscape in the background either.
You have no idea what a pain in the neck finding these things in the USA has been. Talk about unobtanium! Thankfully a fellow list member came thru with the goods. They're rivetted too, so it's a manly man's wheel.
They still seems somewhat common in Blighty, but shipping was gonna be killer.

Rostyles at the stripper. RRC SWB off to new owner. Parts run to Ron's in the AM. Paint order placed.
Next order of bizzy; fill all bolt holes on galvy-to-be parts with silicone. Clean up old tank and assess. Get V8 engine and trans un-assed from chassis. Weld in repair pieces on door frames so they can go to galvy.

Got the frame rear crossmember looking pretty dope. BFH and wood blocks did the trick.
Old tank rotten. Too bad.
Got Rons engine out and broke down some suspension bits and did a lot of wire brush work with the angle grinder.

Oh, one other major accomplishment that isn't really Rover related. Got my 1954 vintage Evinrude Fastwin going. Starts on the second pull. Now I have a decent kicker/trolling motor for the Allmand.

I am sure I saw somewhere a website with pics that showed exactly where to weld in your engine mounts for a 200 Tdi. Now I can't find it. Kinda would like to see that one again.

They look galvanized! Are you going to paint them silver, or do the shadow trim?
Are you sure that Was Art of Noise? Maybe you are thinking Yello.

They will be galvanized, then epoxy primed and top coated with two part poly in limestone.

Over here they are as rare as an honest Englishman, so I want them to live a long time. I'm prolly going to be outlived by this vehicle.

Chassis work. Got all the stuff off it, down to just the chassis.Nice to have the loader to flip it over for priming. Using Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer. That schmidt is a hundred bucks a gallon and the activator is 85 bucks a gallon. The thinner is 27 dollars a quart. Faaaak.
I paid the price for taking too long with spraying and clean up....extra two hours tacked on to the ride home.

PS You may spot the incredible extendo-buks. They kinda fell apart during the flip process and had to be rebuilt.
