I have not started my Land Rover in over a month - with holidays and travel getting in the way. I hope to start making cold weather modifications in the next few days and get it all prepared for the 660 mile trip Northward.
I need to think up a design for my custom rad muff for this year....

The frame and drivetrain are in great shape. The Tdi is mint. The body has terminal corrosion. I've redone it twice in the 17yrs I've been owned by her and it's just done. I have a nice 2 door body that is going on but have had a silly busy year in the shop and I haven't had time to make the swap......that and shopgirls rig has pretty much occupied any *spare* time.
Soooooo......it's back to the basics. Actually having a lot of fun w/ the dirty old IIA and I'm sure she'll Romp just fine. Prolly no trail breaking heroics though.

If decided you wanted 4 doors there is a 1988 on craigslist in Freeport they are probably ready to let go cheap.... Dont worry at this rate it doesnt look like theyll be any need to break trail.

Eric
yeah, Jake called the other day about that. I've already got a pile of RRC's( 5 me think). I just liked the idea of doing the 2 door.
I have a sweet '95 LWB tdi but I think I'll not be romping that. The IIA is fine. I've already done every trail up there in it. The drive up is OK after the first 1/2 hr of raging 2.5na :).
Shopgirl might bring up the Disco mule loaded with some hotness.
I have a ridiculous amount of pre romp prep jobs showing at the shop and more getting dropped every day. Anyone going by early is welcome to stop by as I am right off the highway as you come into Maine. I'll be there until Friday night.
So Chapman is showing up? It's going to be really boring for him after all the epic wheeling in his neck of the woods. :boring

AT's and chains work really well as long as you take the time to learn or be educated on how to use the chains before you hit the trail.

Plan on going Thurs as well, earlier the better for me - asked Jarek on NJLR if he wanted to meet up and I think we'll do something.
I'm going to trailer the LR up their. Just too damn long on pavement to sit in the defender at 55 the whole way!
as the day approaches, let me know where everyone is meeting and at what time
Also - my other half can't come, shes got a baby shower to go to (god those things must suck). Anyone looking to split a room? I dont need to but figured if someone is looking to save some coin I'll be glad to split a room and do the same

Yes we got some snow. I was in NYC yesterday and it was like spring and it was 30 here! No truck still has no motor in it. Was waiting for the clutch to arrive and hopefully bolt everything on tomorrow and drop the motor in Saturday. Lobster for dinner or live ones to bring home?
rijosho

Going to need some live ones for the trip back. Last time I was in Portland, ME I got a lobster roll from Portland Lobster Company that was pretty damn good, though!

I tore / broke / rusted my brake line through on Saturday at 430 pm on the furthest section of the Narrow Gauge Trail . We crimped the remaining line and i limped back to Bruce's for an all night fix-it party. I got done a midnight - so i missed all the in town socializing but was back on the trails on Sunday
Off the trails now and ready for long drive home tomorrow.
I discovered tonight that my heater valve is leaking. Hopefully the slight weep will stay a weep until i get to Virginia.
(I hear it is snowing in Virginia, now.)
Here are some random photos from today.

Whats all that brown stuff? I thought winter romp was a snowy, freeze your ass off with a piss poor heater kind of event. That looks downright balmy!
-Jeff
No shit. I've been going up there for 18yrs or so and this was pretty much the easiest it's ever been. Even the "pit of dispare" was easy compared to the usual. Some of the other small obstacles were a little tricky due to the *brown ice*.
I'm not complaining. There has been years when all forward movement for the first couple of days was behind a winch. This year you could drive any trail in any direction in a stock IIA. Fantastic conditions.

Nope. There were 3 white 90's that I saw there. I actually don't have a pic on mine. I do think I saw a black 90 on the steep ice hill where those drunk guys were falling and drinking moonshine. That really was the highlight of the trip.
Did you see when the guy yelling "drive like i stole it" was pulling laterally on the winch cable while they were winching? The operator released the winch and the guy fell flat on his ass. Hat went flying and he was bald as could be. Effing hilarious.
My friend told me that teeth could be used as currency up there. I think he was right.

Ah Dennis I did see your truck! But, it was on Saturday morning at the lineup, and I saw your truck allll the way across the field toward the next queue up out on the trails. I remember the Hella Cat eyes up top, and the rear windows out. Actually, it convinced me to take my windows out as well, and I think it was the smartest thing I did all weekend. It seemed like only some of the trucks could make it up that hill. Longer wheelbase trucks seemed to get up it better and also trucks with different tires would make it up no problem. Jorge and Josh made it up with their KM2s, Jarek and Adrian with their SSRs or whatever they have. My KM1s had no chance... even when I was wearing my sombrero! But on the hill after that I made it up and they didn't. Everything was pure ice.
Lucky for me I snapped it right at the flange. took it apart and the piece was sticking out of he flange about 2 inches. popped the CV off and stuck a new CV on the axle, drank some beers and that was it.

Nope. Just observant. The whole first day and half everyone kept yelling at me to use more pedal, or "drive it like you stole it" - I thought I was, but my floor mat had rolled over under the screw on the other side of the accellerator, so until I realized that, I was just lying when I told them I had the pedal to the floor. haha. oops.

You might need a new stub axle bushing and possibly a new axle flange. It looks line the bushing is shot and allowed the CV to wallow around and wore on the outer end of the stub axle. Never seen wear like that (or that type of failure) before.

I was around 20psi. The rest of the guys were 20-18 I think. I felt like mine were aired way too high for that hill. My KM1s are a bit worn out too. the fresh KM2s that Josh had did great up it. They have a tighter tread pattern and better on ice like the BFG all terrain tires. I think my KM1 tread was spread too far apart for the ice. The stock series with us made it up that hill too and I think he had normal all terrain tires on!
Jorge had a fresh set of KM2s and I think he was fully locked up that hill. Josh and Adrian were unlocked like me and they made it up while I didn't. Jarek had a rear locker, Merc diesel and his tires are also like 15" across deflated.
One thing I did over the obstacles was to put it in high 1st gear just to keep my tires from spinning. too low of a gear on that shit would make you lose it right away.

2/3 :) Winching doesnt count. Steep ice requires momentum...or chains.. If you didnt get moving before you hit the steep part of the hill you werent getting up. Jeffs large side lugs on his tires seemed to help him. My tires are a fairly dense tread and filled up quickly and lost traction.

The first day I had no problem with that hill. 20lbs in my 235/85/16 TrXus
See vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItbhrBxVMtE&feature=channel[/URL]
Second day I had 20lbs in the front but almksot 30 in the rears (I had a plug in a tire and didn't want to risk it coming loose) I got cocky and let off halfway up and then had to regain my momentum to get it up the hill
2nd day vid:

The Trxus did great and I'll be putting them on my next wheel/tire combo. They have a ton of siping and it does well in the wet/snow/ice
The other hill was a bit longer, and it wasn't so much the tires that gave me trouble but finding the right gearing. Low 1st and Low 2nd didn't get me the speed to make it past the "bumps", High 1st or High 2nd, didnt get me the acceleration to get the rpms up. The second day I made it up easy starting in low 3rd. I think yoiu may have been better off with more air. Typically soft powdery stuff you want a wide footprint (like snow shoes), hard icey stuff you want a narrow footprint to "dig" through the ice and get traction
That being said, if its a sheet of ice its gonna suck regardless unless you have chains or studs
