how can you tell if there are new posts??

At the left of each topic, there are grey folders. When a new post has been added that you have not seen yet, it will turn yellow with a red star. You can see the differant icons at the bottom of the forums main page and each page will have a guide at the bottom of what any folder or icon on that page means.

You may have to wait 15 minutes for the information to be refreshed in your cookie. I think the board is set to refresh one's account cookie information every 15 minutes. I will look into seeing if thats adjustable either at lunch time or when I get home tonight.

It does the same for me and I notice it change around that timing.

Thanks,

CVC

Try going into your User control panel (User CP button at the top of the forum) and go into "Edit options". Make sure that both: "Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies)" and "Browse board with cookies?" are set to "Yes".

This will also keep you logged in the next time you visit. The issue of everything always being marked as unread is usally when you are not logged in or unregistered and if your security settings are set to high in your browser.

Let me know if that does it. If not, I will look into it more tonight when I get home.

Thanks,

CVC

I never had trouble like this with the old site in terms of seeing where new posts had been and new threads etc. thanks for your help, you are most generous in keeping this place going thanks a lot.

It does the same for me Phillip. But if I leave the site and come back in 30 min the folders I read turn grey.

okay I see. thanks for the info. I guess it will be something that the forum god will have to adjust on the program? how come the old BB would immediately show what new posts there were and that I had read them?

The old bord did not do that for me. The new icon would stay there but the link would change color indicationg that I had been there. Then if someone posted something the link would change back indicating someone posted and the link had changed.

Hi Phillip,

If you click the link at the top of the thread or forum that says "mark thread as read", are the folders still showing up as unread after it refreshes?

Thanks.

yeah it will make the star go away. I just log in and log out once I go thru the most recent posts then log back in and that makes those damn stars go away. I will just continue to do that. Chris thanks a bunch for your help and your continuious work here on the www.d-90.com.

Ok.. good so you have a bit of a work around at least. I will still look into it and see if there is something I have overlooked.

Ok... as a follow up I found some more info.

The read/unread status, who is online display, as well as other features that are user account specific are controlled by your cookies and the cookie timeout settings of the boards software.

The default timing is set for 15 minutes meaning that the information will not refresh unless there is 15 minutes of inactivity on your account. The only way to get it to refresh everything right away would be to log out and then back in again.

If you just want to clear the Unread mark from post you have already been in, you can use the "Mark all threads read" option on the forums main page or if you are in a sub forum use the "Mark this forum read".

I seem to continue to get emails whenever someone replies to a thread I've started. I like you guys and all, but it's filling my inbox. I turned off email notification, but it seems to still do it. Any pointers CVC?

Dave Hit the Edit button for the thread then uncheck the Email Notification box on the bottom of the screen in the options section.

David,

You need to go into your user control panel and adjust some settings. By default, the forum will assume that you want to be notified of replies to threads you have made a post in but this is easily toggled to your preferance.

Click on User CP and that will take you to your control panel main page. at the bottom you will see a listing of all the threads you are "subcribed" to that will send you emails. Just click "Unsubscribe" to each one and you should no longer get emails when ever someone posts in the thread.

Next, click on "Edit Options" and in the "Messaging & Notification" section, find "Use 'Email Notification' by default?" option and switch it to "No".

I too was getting over run with email messages and I think I will make that 2nd setting change as a default. People can always change it if they wish and it will reduce bandwith on the server.

Dave reply to this thread. Before you hit submit reply look directly under the"Your Reply:" section, there is an "options" section, uncheck the "Email Notification" there is no yes or no to check just a checkmark to be there or not be there. You must do this for every thread that you get e-mails for. I had to do the same thing when I started posting I did like you and clicked no in the "user cp" section but you still have to uncheck the ones already activated.
