View Full Version : Exmoor: Cloth, Vinyl or Leather ?

I'm looking to buy a pair of the Exmoor Trim seats for my SWB project. I don't have any existing seats so the re-trim option is ruled out. Trouble is I'm having a tough time deciding between cloth, vinyl or leather seats.
I realize that part of the decision has to do with how I intend to drive the vehicle and, to be honest, I'm not altogether certain just how much water will get into the vehicle. It's a hard-top and I don't see myself being super-hard-core.
Does anyone have experience with their seats to be able to share some insight?

Well, I initially bought their LR logo fabric retrims for my front seats. The samples looked nice, but when I received them, I just wasn't happy with the color and slight shimmer of the seat. It was supposed to be grey, but ended up with a greenish shimmer. Hard to explain. But looked like the MASK.
So I turned around and bought the XS leather fronts with heated seat pads. These are super nice, and I'm very pleased with them. They breath well, as the center section is a denier type of fabric, and the rest is a nice leather. I would recommend going to the leather. My feeling us, they hold up better to use and abuse.

I have set of their G4 material seats - its a much heavier vinyl than OEM. I don't really know how well it would go in a vintage rover since it has a fairly up-to-date look. What is your SWB project? A 88" series truck? I'd probably just go with some of their grey vinyl. I wouldnt worry about anything exmoor sells, it all appears to be of excellent quality.

Martin - mine arrive -no sh!t- in 4 days. I was f'n stoked.
After that it took me 2 months to get around to the install. I'm so lame.
You are going to be really, really happy with these seats. I got them heated as well.

Tdi asks What is your SWB project?
I'm restoring an 88" with some modifications to make it easier / more comfortable to drive. Originality takes a back seat to comfort and useability.
I have a quote for the Extreme Trakker cloth seats (TKE1) at $820 US for a pair with heater and lumbar support included.

I too have installed the leather seats with heaters. I'm very pleased with them, but in all honesty, I don't think there is much moo in that leather! ;)

Yeah Jim I am pretty impatient when it comes to ordering things, I want them now, I cant stand when things are on back order. But I will be amazed if they arrive at the end of next week. I would have ordered them Air Conditioned, but that wasnt a option:)
Matt- I will have the seats for sale, i will send you pics and you can tell me what you would like to pay for them. I have a good shipping company that I use so no need to worry about costly shipping charges, stay tuned.

Martin -
When you say G4 seats - are those the same as the XS style?
I'd love to see a few pictures after they're intstalled if possible.

The G4 seats are not the XS ones - here is a pic of my G4 seats installed (which I did with the DIY retrim kit) and a closeup of the texture.
I have since sandblasted and repainted the seat tracks, so they dont look like butt any more.

Jim - thanks for the pic's, those look pretty awesome. Is the material the same as the XS with just a different design? I can't seem to find them on Exmoor's website - where should I look?
2 more quick q's - How well do the seat heaters work and what are you using for switches to control them? Thanks for helping.

Here is the XS. I think the difference between the XS and G4, is the G4 is a vinyl.

You can see my switches in the 3rd pic, center of the center console just in front of the radio. They are both round, three position switches.

I did something similar with my heated seat switches - I have a tuffy console so I put them in the little front section where the radio goes. I also wired 2 cigarett lighters in there too. The seat heaters work just fine - I have no complaints with their performance. Whe you buy them from Exmoor, they come as a complete system, so all you have to do is connect the main power lead to the batter, a switched lead to a 12v swichted source, and a ground.

If I read Exmoor's web site (http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk)correctly, their XS range (http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/xsstyleseats.htm)can be applied to any of the Exmoor seats such as the Extreme Trakker (TKE1 (http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/extreme%20seats.htm)) or G4 seats. (I couldn't find the G4 on Exmoor's site).

Do those switches come as part of the package from Exmoor?
Still can't find any info on the G4's on Exmoor's website. Is the G4 a full seat, retrim package or both?
Thanks guys.

Yes, the switches do. The wiring harness is quite complete and a nice bit of kit.
You can buy any of their stuff as retrim, complete seat or other. Just call them. They are easy to work with, responsive and flexible.

Hi Martin,
What was the cost...including shipping? I saw that fabric a while ago in the SE3 and loved it! I recently discovered that Exmoor added that option...and I am psyched!
Thanks,
Brian

How much did the seats run you? Jimmy, how much was the G-4 retrim and foam? Was it easy to do?
JimC
March 19th, 2005, 05:53 PM
The seats were very easy to re-do, but it took two hands so i didnt get much in the way of pix.
I think that, shipped, the new foam, upholstery, and heaters came to around 700 bucks. I dont remember what the pound rate was, but it wasnt good.
It took me longer to clean up and repaint the seat frames, mine were rusty and ugly and I had to sandblast them to get them decent again.

I'm surpised it came US Post - I seem to get repeatedly hosed by USPS. My stuff came UPS.
Glad the clock works.
Now if you want to be really cool, call George at RDS and demand a limited edition G4 clutch bracket.

Also David is the black leather as black as the center console?

Have any of you guys tried going to a local upholster shop and getting the seats redone there? I had my two front seats in my disco redone for $80 by a guy who works out of his garage near my work. You cannot tell the differance from the original. Granted that is a exceptional deal and not the norm but it is worth looking around. I am getting my Defender seats done by the same guy in the near future.

What the hell happened to your plans of a 100". So let me get this straight, you sold your 90, so you can buy another 90? :confused
You want to put Dana 60's on instead of the Salisbury's you had on your red 90.
Can we at least see pictures of this new truck?
you know if you put a 3-link on there you won't be able to use it as a daily driver :grin

I am curious if anyone also purchased a retrim kit for a rear bench seat. I am trying to have the front seats match a second row forward facing bench.
Exmoor has some information on their website for the front seat kits and I also checked out some of the offerings via Atlantic British. Unfortunately there is not much regarding a rear seat kit.
I was considering the retrim kit with the logo until I read the negative review on this thread. If anyone has a picture of that material it would be helpful.
Any information would be appreciated.

I'm going to look at an ex-mod 110 today and might buy it also. This D90 went for sale at a great price and I couldn't pass on it (Tom Peacock's 94 D90). I won't turn this D90 to look like my old one. I'm only adding gears, lockers, axles, and off course the a 3-link b/c I think this system sucks and the 90 won't be very streetable :grin
I'm also interested in the rear seat retrim. Anybody know anything?

I have the XS leather trim in my rig. I like it alot. Very high quality. You need seat covers though. The leather is good but stains kinda easy.

I love it, key word being "only"
an Ex-mod 110, wow. Where did you come across that? That must have been tough to get through customs :grin

You're better off calling Exmoor direct. They ship it fast and are easy to work with, especially with questions you will have like:
"Should I get lumbar support?"
"What about heated seats for my little dog?"
:)
