New non-corrosive alloy door hinges and bolt kit

The photo did not even have side mirror attachments.
Since my last look was I thought about $17.00 each for old hinges this is a bit hard to swallow.

It looks like they added a zinc or chromate finish when compared to the standard hinge, I think I will buy a few stock hinges and have them plated, that should help thwart the rust monster :naughty

I got a set of those from the dealer under the corrosion warranty. I haven't seen them yet though. I carried my truck today to the body shop, and won't get it back till first of the year. If I stop by and see the hinges, I'll take a couple of pics and post them.

By the way, didn't you know that LR plated the pins in the hinges, which was the main cause of rust on the hinge? That is how they justify the hinges costing $50/piece rather than $15/piece:grin

You all should know that motosource, the company that brought us the stainless steel bolt kits is planning some kind of plated hinge to be ready soon....

Yes, Tony is making up a nice set of hinges out of machines alloy and they are real nice. I think they will be the same price as the ones from RN.

I have the new rover hinges installed (those in the link above)

They were painted, then installed three weeks ago with the Motosource stainless hardware.

THEY ARE ALREADY BEGINNING TO RUST!!

Can't wait for the Motosource billet hinges!

They will be about $300 a set for the driver/pass doors. Don't know about the back door.

Please correct me if I am wrong (oohh and I know y'all will) but are not the hinges on the Defender pinched (that's english for lifted, stolen, pirated) from the Series III. And as Series III hinges are much much cheaper I can afford to replace the hinges every year for a decade and still make money.

300 bucks is quite a bit.


However. The amount of rust that managed it's way into my doors after 6 years was astounding. Of course, I saw my doors from the inside when they were replaced last month.

The rust comes from not only the outside where the bolts, are, but the inside as well. It works its way down the bolt threads and into the door.

Also, the pins inside the hinges rust and wear grooves into the hinges which rust no matter what kind of surface anti-corrosive you apply.

A one time $300 fix to apply to my new doors and new paint seems attractive. But I'm open to any advice!

Hey, McMaster Carr has Stainless steel hinges without holes for under $15 each * 4 = $60. They are made of .120" 316 SS and have a 1/4" pin. You could use the existing hinges as a template as long as the hing pins wer centered together. Or you could buy Titanium hinges for $33 each * 4 = $132 still cheaper then $300 although they won't look as good.

I'm at a point where I need to replace all of my hinges and bolts. I like Tony's idea but I stiff prefer the original look of the hinges. Maybe galvanizing the hinges and getting Tony's SS bolt kit would be the choice?

It's tough. Maz, I agree that the rust does penetrate the doors,
and nice hinges are a temptation. But for me, old hinges + Marine store bought stainless screws + that white plumbers teflan tape on the threads + heavy grease. The extra $200 will go to a rear seat or side sliders.

The hinges are actually factory. It's what rover sells now if you go to the dealer. They have a weird green hue to them, but otherwise look the same.

I guess I'm being a bit nuts about it. It will wear off. I just got the truck a few weeks ago when the restoration was finished.

I think I have a fix for the rust, however. Move to California. I'm jealous of you guys.

Maz, No I do not work for Amgen. My wife is working with them. That is what relocated us from NJ to here. It is nice here, though our 1st month was a kicker - the fires got to within 3 miles of the house, there was a 3.6r earthquake, the LA public buses went on strike, as did the supermarket employees. And the weather sucks! 65-70f all day, 40-45f at night.

hey guys, thanks for the positive feedback re: our aluminum billet door hinges. the hinges are to be machined from aluminum billet, they will be satin black hardcoated, hardcoat is preferred to annodizing because trhe finish penetrates the metal as deep as it is on the surface. if desired they can be painted. the pivot pins are stainless steel and there are stainless pivot bushings installed to prevent wear. an added feature are oil holes in the back for lubrication. the kits will be complete with all the required fasteners in stainless. i'm a little behind schedule, i was hoping for december, but a mid january date is more realistic. thanks again, tony.

How/where would we get these new hinges when they come become available? It'd be great if we could buy these directly from you (i.e. online store), to cut out the middle man. Win-win for everybody. :grin

And for those of us who already bought/have your existing SS replacement fasteners (including those for the hinges), can you please offer a hinge set available without the fasteners? Any little savings helps.
