Well after all this time I am headed to OR to pick up the newest member to my my family - an orginal owner Beluga Black 97 ST w/60K miles, and although a little more than expected, a slight misunderstanding on my part, I think $23,500 is a good deal. Although I need to add the A/C kit which adds $2,000.
I am flying up on Thursday and have an inspection scheduled at Portland LR and barring any unforeseen damages/repairs will be driving it back to Sunny California after the check changes hands. It sounds a little crazy but I can't put into words my excitement. It is hard to imangine feeling this way about a car.
I want to thank everyone on this board for all the advice they have given me even though I didn't even own a D-90. I am looking forward to many years posting and reading this message board.
I 'll forward pis, etc ASAP to add to the BIOS.

$23K for a '97 with 60K is a good deal. Once you get pictures ready just email them over to me.

Good luck with your new rig... I know exactly how that feels and reading your post made me reminisce 6 months ago when I picked ours up. Actually, mine was more of a mixed emotions as the wife didn't know about it. It was going to be a "present" for her and I didn't know how she would react....;)
Anyway, congratulations again and looking forward to see it. That's also a nice price for a 97!

Joe,
Just wanted to let u know you're not that crazy. I know EXACTLY what you're going through and how you're feeling, cuz I flew from Chicago to LA to buy my D90, after having seen the car on AutoTrader.com and not knowing anything about Defenders at that point.
This was only about 3-4 weeks ago. I absolutely love mine and I know you will love yours too. Good luck with everything.
I bought mine from a guy up in San Luis Obispo, CA. He drove down to LAX to meet me there (we had agreed beforehand on price, not withstanding any surprises). I test drove it, gave him the check, and drove it to my friend's house in Santa Ana that night. It was awesome driving in So Cal, having the door tops off and soft top windows out. I flew back a week later and drove it all the home to Chicago, from Santa Ana! Now that's crazy. It was fun though.
In case you're interested, I bought mine for $27800. 97 D90 ST, 46500 miles, AC, wraparound front bar, side steps, hella lights, surrey top, great condition except for a ding on the driver side door. I would recommend looking it over in the daylight though when you're buying it. I bought mine at night and didn't notice some minor things until the next morning, but no biggies.
I think that's a really good price on your D90, even w/o the AC.
I would definitely recommend running a CarFax on it if you haven't already.
Here's a pic at the time of sale:

Hey Joe, that is dirt cheap for a 97, nice grab, if you want to know the history on the truck, drop me a email and I can get the info off land rover online.
mpodgorski@landroverfortlaud.com
I am surprised that the 97 doesnt have A/C, I thought that they came standard then.
Paul Huynh:
I noticed the pic you posted, that the front fender flare is glossy, and the rear is flat black, did you have the truck , is that part of the ding?

Martin:
Good eye, mate! yeah, that glossy fender flare was one of the "minor things" i didn't notice until after i bought the car. obviously, it's not stock. even though there's nothing in the carfax report of any accidents or claims, i think they replaced the whole front left fender, which includes the glossy fender flare. they don't make the matte flares anymore. I say they replaced the whole fender, because, if u have a really good eye, you'll notice that the side light is in the wrong position too for a *1997* D90. the light is actually in the spot that is for a 1994 D90. so, i think they used a 94 fender for replacement). oh well, just one of those things i gotta live with. but no, the ding was on the driver door itself. If you don't mind, I sent u an private email to see if you can run a history for my car. I'd like to really know what's up with that front left fender and flare.
Gord: you got me beat there! but how'd u get your Defender back to Canada from the UK?! ship, literally?

I bought my first D-90 from an auto wholesaler....it had an incredible 73 thousand miles on it...at the time an unbelievable amount. It was a '94 with a hardtop and tickford. It ended up having a lot of problems (the tranny had never been done)....so in a fit of "i've had enough!" I traded it in on a brand new Toyota Tacoma. This after having driven a 300 thousand mile series III for years and years.
I got the Toyota stuck the first day. Six weeks later (and six thousand dollars poorer) I traded it for the '94 D-90 I have today. A Toyota is like a refrigerator, plug it in and forget it. I learned the hard way that a Defender that pokes at you once in while for attention beats a refrigerator any day.
So, since all of that, I have wondered where my first D-90 went. The day after I bought the Toyota I tried to get it back...but they wouldn't undo the deal.
Now I have found it! On the trail ride in Paragon that Chris just posted...there it is! Now bearing a Nevada license plate! Who ever you are contact me!! There are a couple of things you might want to know about that truck. I know it is my old rover because of your unique tickford...stickers and some bolt holes over your license plate light.....gotta talk.

My PO in NC bought it from Natick, MA. He only drove it a few thousand miles and said it ran well for him.
Lots of holes and extra wires that I've been trying to figure out. Email me or PM and we can talk.

Home at last. I was pleasently surprised when I got there. Comes to find out it only had 40K miles. 41K now after the drive back to So Cal. Took it to the Portland LR dealer to check it out. main seal has a slight leak. Front dif is leaking and needs some work. The front drivers fender has a ding. mechanic said it was the best one he has seen. Other than that it is pretty much perfect. I spent well over $125 on gas just to get it back. Thanks again for everyones help on making this decision.

Ok, maybe not. But two of the Rovers I've got (one from Autotrader) both came from an area known as West Seattle only 3 miles from each other.
And then there's that one that I had driven out to Seattle from PA.

Ken,
I know your truck has a 380 in it. I PAID FOR IT!! I'll send you an email on what that truck has been through but I wonder if you found any white hairs in it. I see your dog in most of the pictures...that truck was the rolling attack platform for my two 140 lb Alaska Malamutes (brothers who were born in Alaska where I am from, and who lived to be 12 and 14.) I drove them deep into the woods for a run twice a day....for years.
The four holes above your license plate lamp were for my Hella work Lamp. That's why your belt rail is cut short above it...the Hella was already there when I changed to the belt rail system. Your top was custom done at Badger Coachworks on Cape Cod. I came up with the idea (the Tickford is so much better than the Bestop) and he executed it.
The reason I put the spare on the hood is because I had been driving a series truck for 300 thousand miles and it just seemed right. The guy who makes the USA Southdown stuff made the CB antenna mount. I am so glad to see that truck went to someone else who uses it like I did...I had that thing airborne about once a week.
Part of the trouble I had with it was the rust underneath which had taken hold when I got it. A New Jersey doctor had bought it for his kid who drove it back and forth to Boston University...hence the big miles. I later found out...he had (get ready for this....) rolled it while off road....tumbled down a creek bank and landed upside down in the creek. It got left there...halfway submerged.....for a week.
Lots of hocus pocus happened to it at the dealer (my friend worked there...) to make the insurance company pay most of the bill. I knew none of this when I bought it. The kids dad then bought him a Hummer...not my idea of a nimble off road truck..as I have pulled four of them a.) out of a ditch, b.) off a hump where it was high centered, and c.) 2 of them off a Cape Cod beach...(one with a series truck no less.)
I once went to a Rover show and they said the parking would be 10 bucks...but if I put my truck on display I could park for free. So they give you a card to fill out and put on the truck to boast its features. Under Best Feature I put...."Only Rolled Once."
Your truck has nine lives.....

I bought a disco off LRX once. 1997 with extended warranty. Flew from Columbus, GA to Philadelphia where the guy met me at the airport in the truck. We'd settled on the price already. It was lifted, mud tires, ARB bumper and a couple good dents. He was a salesman at the LR Cherry Hill dealership in New Jersey. We drove there and when I started looking over the rig I noticed a nice puddle of coolant collecting on the pavement below the engine. So they wheel it into the service bay and put in a new water pump, under warranty. I flew in at 10am and was on the road back by 1pm.
Somewhere in Virginia I stopped and noticed a drip or two of engine oil on the pavement, but kept on going. Made it to Charlotte by midnight.
Next morning I got moving by 7am and was arrived at the LR dealer just north of Atlanta by 10am. They replaced the front main seal, and did both rear hub seals and a tranny output shaft seal, all under warranty. They even replaced the windshield wiper motor... under warranty.
I wheeled the crap out of that truck for about 3 years. I sold it this summer and bought 1997 D90 ST #0752 from Copley Motor Cars in Boston. Dave Marchand was good enough to go over to Stu's shop and check it out for me. I had it trucked to my door and have been happy ever since. Been to Tellico twice, MAR and the recent Solaros rally in North Georgia.
My wife understands that this is a way of life, not really a hobby. I don't golf, so she appreciates the fact that I am either in the garage with the truck, wheeling in the truck, or driving around with the kids in the truck. Really a perfect existence if you ask me.

I got mine 4-5 months ago off of Ebay (I'm in California, and it was in NY/NJ), then had it trucked out across the country.
I did as much homework as possible before buying...but it was a scarly leap of faith.
It's been good so far, and definitely as advertised. It's got a good amount of rust underneath (suspention mostly), but it wouldn't have dissuaded me from the purchase.
On balance, after several months...I love it. Definitely.
Yes, it takes a ton of gas, I have to work on it every weekend, and it's not comfortable or quiet...but hardly anyone else has one.

I had a similar experience when I trade the 127 to the 110. After agreeing on the details of the trade, I (from Oregon) set off to meet the other party (from Alabama) in New Mexico. Thanks for the compliment. I have to say it is everything I had hoped for and more. Just like everyone says it is loud, it leaks when it rains (which it did the entire 1000 miles from OR) and I have already stuck a couple of grand into it.
I also did a ton of research and almost bought two different trucks before I found this one by accident. I guess the third times a charm. I got lucky. There is no rust on it and everything is in great condition. I just got back from vacation but I plan on taking it out and geting some photos. Once I do I will send them into Chris to put up an owners bio.

I've meant to post a message for a couple weeks now but have been swamped with holidays, travel, and a new truck. Well, not quite new....
Beast is a '94 Beluga Black Defender ST with leather seats (one of the 100 that year) and around 50K Miles. As it was that years' special edition it also has factory installed side steps and an A-bar.
I am in love.
Crazy in love. I sold my Ford Explorer. My only other transportation is a '81 Delorean. Not a realy sensible or practical car. Apparently my particular psycosis involves electrical systems designed by British engineers....:rolleyes
My story: I have lusted after Land Rovers for years. I think that the seeds were planted by the movies "Born Free" and "The Gods Must Be Crazy". Series Land Rovers.....Yum. But, also REALLY not practical. Don't flame me about Series Rovers. If I didn't live in an apartment complex in the middle of a city I would probably be in the process of restoring a 109. A partially dissmantled vintage truck in the garage would NOT go over well with the building manager. As it is it took me 5 days to get a parking spot in the upper garage - Beast wouldn't clear the gate to the lower garage. The spot was always available, the manager just felt like flexing his muscles...
When the Defender savings fund started to reach a point where it was real I started tracking them on E-Bay. (God I love the Internet. How did we live without this when we were kids? No auctions, spam, spyware or porn...)
I had originaly been looking at Station Wagons. Something about the profile and the Alppine windows has always caught my eye. On a recent trip to Seattle I met one of my sister's neighbors. He has a '97 Beluga Black ST. He had been warned that I was a Rover junkie looking for a fix and planing on buying a truck soon. Within minutes of meeting I was taking his truck for a spin around their neighborhood. It was a rare Seatle day, warm and sunny, so the truck was topless. That was the moment when I realized that living in Los Angeles the Soft Top was the only way to go, as long as it had Air Conditioning.
I had been looking at one that Copley Motorcars had in Boston when the Black '94 showed up localy. I'm sure that it is not news to the people on this board that a lot of the west coast D90's have high milage so when one showed up with 48K Miles I had to check it out. I didn't call first so was dissapointed to find that it didn't have AC. Didn't even take it for a drive. Later that night I was surfing my "Rover Porn" sites (D-90, Atlantic British, East Coast Rover, etc.) when I noticed Rovers North was now offering AC kits for defenders. The Black '94 was back in play.
I went back the next week to test drive it. I bought it the next day.
So far it is everything I expected. There are a few issues, but none that can't be resolved. I have already replaced the door top studs with stainless ones and Quicknuts from Atlantic British. The old studs were quite rusted and needed lots of WD-40 and force to remove from the tops. Mods to come include an ARB front end, Tuffy Speaker/storage boxes, Badger full top, stainless bolts, and a dash mount interface to the stereo for an iPod.
I'm going to try living without AC for a while. I suspect that around the middle of August while sitting on the 405 I'll decide that I REALLY NEED AC. Around $2500 for the kit and ?$ for instalation is a bit steep. It might need to be done. We shall see. On that note if anyone knows a shop in the Los Angeles or Orange County area who could do the install please let me know.
I'm taking Beast on its' first trip later this week when I drive up to Lake Tahoe. I've been waiting until after the trip to post a photo since I know there are some great backdrops in the high desert near Mojave, in the Eastern Sierras, and (of course) at the lake.
I just realized what time it was (Very Late!) so I'll end this posting with: Glad to finally be a full-fledged member of the club. Expect lots of questions form a newbie.

I am glad I have the AC in mine but if it didnt, I would seriously have to consider if it was worth it spending the money. I really only ever use the A/C maybe 4 times a year, the rest of the time, the windows out and vents open I am fine with as long as I am not in a traffic jam. I would be more inclined to spend money on an additional heater or SW doors. :)

Gotta go with CvC. The RN Kit to put AC in a 97 D-90 is a crazy $2700! And it's the new 2004 fascia, not the original unit. They claim it has been updated, but 2700 for AC? I'll sweat and open all the windows before I spen that kind of cash.

Have to go with CVC too. I have AC in my 94 ST and never really use it. With the top off and the windows out, provides enough breeze to cool me down. Never been to California though, might be a different story. Here in Virginia, its humid hot.

Mark,
Congrats. Nice color choice! I like yellow the best but couldn't see me driving a yellow car everyday.
When I bought mine it didn't have A/C - I bought a new kit from Mike at West Chester Land Rover for $1350.00 and had it iinstalled at West Coast Rovers here in Irvine. It cost about $750 to have the kit installed. So far it has been a waste of money. I haven't used it at all. I am hoping during the hot months it will come in handy - but in order for it to be effective I have to put the top back on which I don't want to do.
Give me a call sometime and we can meet up. I am thinking about trying to get a So Cal D-90 get togehter sometime in late Aug - early Sept.

Just an FYI, the PO of my 90 said he would use the AC to blow on his legs when it was real hot and he had the top off stuck in traffic, personally I think it is kinda odd to have AC in a convertible, but some people think I'm kinda odd. I think it would be a better investment to see if you could get new seats that have heaters / AC built into them installed. Then you could have the best of both worlds with the top off.

Have to go with CVC too. I have AC in my 94 ST and never really use it. With the top off and the windows out, provides enough breeze to cool me down. Never been to California though, might be a different story. Here in Virginia, its humid hot.
Yet another person agreeing about the A/C. I've got it and never use it. I've thought of pulling it and selling it to get money for more upgrades. I live in Texas where summer highs are never below 90 degrees and with the surrey top I'm quite comfortable. The only time I ever wish for it is in traffic which thankfully I rarely run in to. When I need to go run errands I have the option of the D90 or the 99' Mustang w/AC. I almost always pick the Defender.
So, who wants to buy a used AC? :)

Hey Guys,
I know this is a fairly old post, but I thought I would share anyways.
I purchased my Yellow 94 D-90 off Ebay a few months back. I remember when I saw one for the first time, back in the mid 90s, I didn't know what it was at first but I knew I had to evenutally have one. It wasn't until this year, sad I know, that I finally stepped up my efforts. I ran across one in the papers advertised at a LR dealership. It was a red 94 with a boatload of miles on it, or atleast to me it seemed like it had quite a bit of miles. The body had a few dings and dents, it was in need of care. It drove strong, they were asking around $22k for it, but my gut told me to pass on it.
That right there was the beginning of the end for me, I had to have one! As I always did, I was perusing Autotrader and Ebay and ran across 'the one'. I contacted the guy, who was down in Alabama, he and I settled on a price before flying down. I bought a one way ticket that Friday, got there around 10AM and was on the road by Noon. I drove straight from Huntville, Alabama up to Michigan, it rained all through the top part of Kentucky and half of Ohio. (I had the badger top w/o the windows on the whole trip.) Got into Michigan to show my family and friends and the next day headed back down to Columbus, Ohio (newly transplanted there with a new job).
The truck is everything I've ever wanted and more. 2 weeks into ownership, I had it thoroughly inspected by Eric of www.trailhead4x4.com (http://www.trailhead4x4.com). He's based out of Cleveland and only about an 1.5 hours away. He looked over the vehicle and gave it a clean bill of health. No leaks, and the combustion seems great! He says he can't believe it even had 53k miles on it.
The only modes I've done so far is swapping out the battery for a Yellow Optima and I'm in the process of replacing those paper woofers they call speakers. I also purchased a red Optima too, for a dual hookup. I would like the gutter kit from Badger, a hardtop, as well as a laundry list of other upgrades. Anyone know where I can pickup a pair of Hella lights at a reasonable price? And which ones to go with?
You guys mention not using the air much, I have to agree, it's rare that I use mine now, however, when I drove out of Alabama it definitely came in handy!
It's funny telling people that I flew down to pickup a car I purchased off Ebay...they look at you as if you're nuts. LOL

Ok..I'll bite. If you got the truck in Alabama, are from Michigan, and now living in Ohio...why does the truck have a Texas license plate?

Jonathan Morgan (the guy I bought the truck from, also a D-90 member) bought the truck from a British guy who lived in San An, Texas a month before.

I've bought lights from these guys. Very helpful. And they do parts and pieces. I don't know if they are the cheapest but they are reasonable for sure.
Your truck looks good Ade.

Thanks for the info! I'll check them out.
I appreciate the kind words...I'm very happy with the D-90, I wish I would have gotten one sooner.
