Help buying comparing d-90's

Need help comparing these 2 d-90's. They are both white (the color I would like) and both from so. cal.
Main concerns, must be reliable and have a/c. I would eventually like to have hard top for winter/soft for summer.

1. $26,500 will sell for $23,800 has 95,100 miles removable hard top & bikini top, new transmission and transfer box. all maint. records, no leaks, no back seat, no air, daily driver, no off road, I would need to buy a full soft top and a/c.


2. $23,500 will sell for ? has 104,000 miles soft top, and a/c. daily driver, no off road. replaced head gasket
at 100,000 miles due to small fire which he said was common and was a very small incident. Have you heard of this? A local shop said someone had it in to check it out and decided not to buy it.


Both look very clean. The same shop said he could put in a/c for $2,500 installed.

1. seems to be the logical choice but I'm hung up on the no a/c. Should I just wait till something better comes around.

You can find AC here if you want (like when I decide to shell out for a Badger you can buy mine). Small engine fires have been common lately (oil cooler lines) but that doesn't mean something else got messed up.
Thing is, with any of them you're going to probably have the same maintenance so in my opinion, buy the cheapest and save your money for the next repair.

BTW are these 97s? Seem a bit steep if they aren't.

you didn't mention what year they were. I agree with Jesse, if these aren't 97' you're paying too much. You can find a 94/95 for as little as 15K, you'll have to look though. The one for 23,5 seems a bit high even for a 97 considering it has fire damage and 100+ miles. I'd keep looking neither of them sound like great deals, I spent a year looking for my last truck. Patience

jburt and skeki thanks for the reply. I hope I can recieve even more replys from the forum. I respect the comments and humbled by ever ones knowledge of d-90's. Enough said.

These are '94 models with the recall changes. In your opinion, if everthing checks out with the local shop and thier d-90 specialist what would you be willing to pay as a fair price. I love these trucks but do not want to over pay- wallet not deep! and future repairs probably ain't cheep!

1. I wouldn't pay more than $18/19K, depending on condition. 1 owner? The thing I like about that one is the new tranny and transfer case.

2. $16K because of the fire and 100K+ miles.

You should ask yourself what you are looking for in a truck like this. Do you want to keep it stock or are you looking to modify it. If you want a nice looking stock vehicle you should look for something low miles and pristine. If you want to off road it and modify it, you should look for the least expensive truck you can find, you will spend the difference in mods. When I bought my last truck I knew I wanted a white 97' to put a 2.8l diesel engine in, so I found a truck with 155K miles for about 10K less than anything else I saw, but like I said I spent a year looking. Good luck with the search.

Look on ebay. There was a white 95 that was up there a bit ago in montana.

Like David says, look around (Especially in this forum's for sale section). It took me 6 years to find the truck that matched my funds at the right time.

And definately decide what you're doing with it. And remember with either of those trucks you should be prepared for something moderately big to go wrong with it. They are 12 years old.

Oh, and what are the "recall changes"? I'm an idiot, I just don't know. (And yes Hippert I searched)

1994 Defender 90 Soft Top (photo)

If you are interested in a Defender that has been given a good start towards being a great off roader read on. All regular maintenance. Some of the usual Defender issues. Rust on the bottom of the doors, odometer stopped at 100,007 miles, synchro between first and second finicky, and dent on front fender. This is a great truck starts first try every time. I drive it everyday and consider it extremely reliable, which is unusual for a D90. I am selling to help finance another Land Rover project.
