3.9L V8 Oil capacity?

I need to change my oil. I changed it once after I bought it, but then my owner's manual was stolen. I don't remember how much oil to add after changing the oil and filter. Also, I don't remember what type is recommended. Can some one help me out?

Also, If you could help me out with the fluid capacites and recommended types for the tranny, diffs, etc., that would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe somone could just scan a couple pages from their owner's manual and send them to me.

6.5 to 7 qts. Make sure you change the filter only after you have drained and replace the oil. fill the oil filter with oil also. NAPA gold filters are good. As for the diffs and t-case I think i needed 7 or 8 containers of gear lube to fill all areas. Uh. as for viscosity it depends sort of on your weather. I will look in my manual and post some what it calls for. Go with Mobil 1 syn. its good.

What is the best type of gear lube to use in the diffs? I don't have any traction devices.

Phillip, Why replace the oil filter AFTER you drain and replace the oil?

because thats what you do with Rovers so you wont have a "dry" start. takes it a second to get the oil moving around the motor after you drain it out and all with oil in the filter that "dry" time is reduced. This is what I have always been told to do with the Rover v8's.

Ken, I think Phillip is saying you should not remove the filter until after you drain the oil, then you should put oil in the filter before you put the filter on so that there is less air to be pushed out of the system and everything gets oil right away.

Jared, I use Mobile One synthetic gear oil in the Diffs, and T-case. Keeps everything quite and running smooth.

nope, drain oil replace with new oil, then replace filter/fill filter with oil. thats what I have been told to do wiht the rover v8

Does the new oil come out when you take the filter off???? I can see putting oil in the filter but I don't know why you would put the new oil in before changing the filter????

nope no oil comes out. look at where it is in conjunction with the sump. I honestly have no idea why people do this but its what i have always heard been told, I dont think it really matters maybe the people at D-Web no more about this, I have seen it discussed over there a bunch.

I heard about the strange order of oil and filter replacement last summer, and I feel confident that Philip is correct. I was also told that there is some kind of washer or something that goes around the oil pan plug. Supposedly, this "washer" needs to be replaced after every oil change. Is any of this true? I haven't had my rover for long enough to change the oil, and I cannot even verify the existence of such a "washer." Can anyone shed some light on this "washer?"

Yes, there is a copper washer that must be replaced prior to fitting the drain plug. Torque to 32lbs.

As far as the filter sequence, The service manual has you drain, replace washer, remove and replace filter, and fill with oil.

Rovers North sells them for $1.50.

yeah that washer...... maybe thats why there is always a drip or 2 by the drain plug

Sometimes the oil can drain out of the oil pump if you remove the filter with the sump empty. The pump won't always self prime which is a monumental pain. You then have to either remove the distributor and stick an electric drill down it to spin the pump gears or strip down the pump, pack it with petroleum jelly and put it back together. All in all its best to do it like the manual says. 99% of the time there's no problem but the worst will always happen at the most inconvenient time:rolleyes

As far as the copper washer goes I only change it about every third oil change. Put I do flip it over every time. So far no leaks. I think they call it a crush ring???

I've changed the copper ring once in about 18 years of LR ownership and nothing bad has ever happened, although the engine did nearly fall out last weekend but that's another thread entirely(Horror2).

In the three years I've had my D90 I've never once changed the copper washer. No leaks!
