Who has burst them?

If so, me.

Who has had their truck catch on fire?

Me too.

Who replaced them with braded steel?

Me.

I did the mocal sand W/thurmo pulled out the adapters in the rad. 20mm[oem] taped with npt & fit russel adapters & ss lines. & Bobs my uncle! I have better OP & looks clean. I will post a pic of the setup. The OEM adapters in the rad have a small id. My next step is to add an external oil cooler & a oil accumulater. That is after I gear & lock the Disco.

Oh I rebuilt mt stock lines & GAVE them to my cousin!! His 94 had original lines.

Mocal here as well, planning on a fan-driven oil cooler in the future.

I upgraded my oil cooler lines in 2001, after seening a burnt d90 at the dealer. I took them to the local hydrulic shop that makes hoses and they used the same ends but replaced the hoses with areo quip hose and fire sleeve The fire sleeve is only secured at the top of the line so if the hose burst the fluid will not spray right onto the manifolds They will spray on to the Axle. I have had no problems since and not even a little leak. This is a far better hose then stock.

I listened to the sage advice from Hans and upgraded my oil cooler lines employing the Rover Accessories (http://roveraccessories.com/) braided SS lines and sandwich plate. After reading the write up that Hans posted at his web site, I decided to upgrade both my LWB and D-90.

The upgrade was very straight forward and cheap insurance. If someone needs a Rover Accessories tech write up I will do that with pics. I called Charles at RA and he was very helpful with the order fulfillment as well as the question I had during install.

My rationale is that if you are serious about keeping these trucks running in the longer term, then you are serious enough to make the oil cooler line upgrade. I was sick to read about Chris' fire, and there are simply too may examples of this weak link prematurely killing off Defenders.

Do Rover Accessories make braided line for a 97 NAS?

I have a Defender 50th Anniversary LE which there are 385 of here in the UK. They are basically a 97 NAS and the only 4.0l V8 auto defender ever made over here. So we will have the same problems with the oil cooler lines i guess. I havent herd of any catching fire yet! I will have to advise themembers of my owners club of the problems.

Best regards

James

Replace mine at 75,000 miles with genuine. Tried to have a local hose shop just change out the hose and reuse the fittings but they were incapable of getting the ends turned in the right directions.

Did the mocal setup (thanks, Hans!) and found a source for the brass fittings for the cooler. In retrospect I should've put fire sleeve on them as well. Will do the lwb next and will use the same setup.

Oh and isn't it great when the Site Admin and the Forum Moderator take a thread off topic in the tech section :grin

I'm going to as soon as it warms up, unless someone can give me good reason not to.

I'm planning on taking mine out some time in the next month. I read another post where someone had done it and been running like that for some time without problems. Plus he mentioned that the newer trucks don't have them at all.

Whats you logic?????

I think you'd only be in danger of overheating if you were towing a loaded trailer across death valley. I have been running without the oil cooler for a month now. Also, the 87-88 classics never had one and Land Rover deleted them from the D2s in 2004...they found they didn't need them. I'm thinking about leaving it off permanently. I also gained about 7psi of oil pressure without it.

I've been to New Mexico and the temperature is pretty comparable to Florida, maybe even hotter in the summer. I don't think humidity has anything to do with overheating so if it worked for Rob I don't see why it wouldn't work for me.

If removing the oil lines caused the truck to run hotter you would see it on the temp guage ,right? If that turns out to be the case I'll get them fixed and put them back on. If you have some reason why this is a bad idea I'd really like to hear it.
