Back from the door hinge thread. I received an email from Tony of motosource last night. Detailing some of the products he's working on. Namely, stailess/anodized door hinges. Here' s a pick he sent, and the release date appears to be around Christmas of this year:

I thought about painting mine black since I smashed a couple of them on rocks, but it look like those hinges will work for me better.
Let us know when they hit the market.
P.S. Isn't Tony the guy that makes the SS hardware kit that AB sells?
dmarchand
September 30th, 2003, 11:02 AM
Yes, he is. He also makes a diamond plate door sill that AB sells, and some other stuff.

Will he offer them "as is" so that we could paint them if we wanted to?

That looks like a thin pin going through the middle - they wont rust but do you suppose they'll last any better than stock?
Now if he makes rear door hinges that can withstand the battering from the spare tire carrier, then I definitely want a set.

September 30th, 2003, 06:15 PM
I dont think the hinges are the weak point in the SW rear door. The fact that the door is more than once piece is what causes the problems. The rear door is good for what it does not haulin around a mud grip tire. IMHO the only solution to the rear tire is a spare tire carrier such as the mantec or to put it on the hood.

Here are some more pictures of the aluminum billet door hinges. These pictures from Tony are the prototypes, the finished product will be anodized black, and they'll have stainless pivot pins and bushings and be packaged with stainless fasteners.

hey guys, thanks for the positive feedback towards our hinges. the photos are the prototypes, we should have complete kits available in december. the hinges are machined from aluminum billet, the pivot pins are stainless steel, there are stainless steel bushings in the pivot plate as well as oil holes in the back. the hinges will be annodized in black. i have a white d90 and painted stock hinges black, they look great. plus black goes well with any color defender. i hope to hit a retail pricepoint of $250.00-$300.00 for a complete kit including all stainless steel fasteners for mounting. if you have a d110, you'll need two d90 kits plus a "110 retro kit" with the appropriate mounting hardware plus plugs for the mirror mounting holes. keep an eye on my site it's on the links for updates. also i'd love to talk to any of you regarding our products. my number is 914-271-6661. i'm in new york. thanks, tony. out.:grin

HEY GUYS, THANKS FOR ALL OF THE GREAT RESPONSE REGARDING THE HINGES. MY FIRST ORDER IS BEING BUILT RIGHT NOW. THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE LATEST MID FEBRUARY. I'LL HAVE KITS FOR D90 AND D110. THE HINGES WILL BE HARDCOATED SATIN BLACK. THIS FINISH IS PREFERRED BECAUSE WE FEEL IT GOES BEST WITH ANY COLOR DEFENDER, AND IF DESIRED THEY CAN BE PAINTED EASIER THAN IF THEY WERE ANNODIZED. I'LL BE SURE TO POST AS SOON AS I HAVE KITS. I CAN BE REACHED AT 914-271-6661 OR 914-441-6690 FOR ANY QUESTIONS. THANKS AGAIN, TONY.

The hinge kit complete for D90 will retail for $299.99, the kit for D110 will retail for $599.99. I'm expecting enough product to assemble 50 kits on my "start up" order, so immediate availability will be good. Any interested parties should let me know so i can put the names on my list. Thanks, Tony.

Reviving this old thread. Has anyone had luck with getting replacement hinges, whether via Tony's new hinge, or the Rovers North hinge kit?
If so, how did they work out for you?

Surfing around tonight I checked his web site and found the hinges. He is referring people to Rovers North and Atlantic British for sales
http://www.motosource.com
I calculated that I can repaint my hinges 1729 times for the price of his new ones.

They don't look right to me. They should be shaped correctly, not like a DeLorean part.
Only for trail rigs that are beat up and people who don't care about any detail.
Would recommend the new design genuine hinges. George @ RDS is advertising a set of them.
Actually I can't even believe that anyone is carrying these motosrouce parts. The guy makes stuff out of Jeepish diamond plating for Rovers. What did he miss? :nerd

There's a page on ECR that goes into detail about it. They've been testing a set for a while.
It's got some bushings and stuff in it to prevent corrosion and better pot metal or something.

They're also completely zinc coated which the stock ones are not. All in all they are nice. RN has a picture of them on they're site. You get everything to install - all bolts, gaskets, captive nuts, ect.
You get more than the hinges alone.

That's what I did! Took them off, sanded, primed, and painted them flat black and they look awesome :)
However, as always I appreciate what Tony did and what he produced. It is nice to see someone uses their skills to bring something new and different to the market, and I don't see why there is always someone that likes to talk smack about what people do :rolleyes

Tony's hinges are super sweet, for sure. I'm not sure I like the 'square-ness' of them, nor do I like the price.
I've had a lot of custom stuff machined, CNC'ed etc...and I KNOW I could get some hinges made that looked stock and still make a profit for way less than what his are or what RN is making.
The line I liked the best was: "Land Rover has designed a new, non-corrosive alloy for both hinges and bolts to prevent rust for good." What a bunch of crap.
Now we're supposed to believe that LR is in the metallurgy business and have some revolutionary non-corrosive material? Have they also added something to the periodic table of elements too?
They're just cad-plated regular hinges with cad-plated bolts. Something new for LR for sure, they've never cad-plated anything before (except maybe brake calipers).
TwisteD90
April 14th, 2004, 11:24 PM
I do agree with you on the price, but look around you everything that involves a LR is expensive.

I was in a bind and too lazy to look for the stainless bolts to install in the hinges so I called Tony @ Motosource and he sold me the bolts out of his 'SS kit' for $50. It was easy and for a grand total of $65, I had them in 2 days.
I asked him about the hinges and he said he was having problems with the company he had making them so it's looking like another '60 days'.

I think MS has the right idea. If the hinges are in good order, just have them re-shot. If the body shop doing the work is good, they should last stain free for awhile. Just oild the pins.

Relatedly...rather than buy a set of stainless bolts for $300 or some insane cost (for doors, hood and rear)...Does anyone know the sizes and thread of the different bolts? How many of each size?
I'm going to buy stainless from a Marine shop, but I'd rather not take off the bolts first to figure it all out...especially if they don't saock the exact ones...
Thanks!

D90 $499.99
D110 $749.99
FIVE BILLS FOR THE D90 ???!!! Is he serious ???
I don't care how nice they are, that's insane...
I think they used to be $250-$300 or something like that for the D90.

I KNEW IT! Whenever I see "Norros" in a thread I know you've got some cash just burning a hole in your pocket! And a good thing too because you're one of the more resourceful guys on this board, e.g. you’re posting on Roof-Top Tents. That post was packed with good information.
I visited motosource.com to check the hinges to see if they were in stock or what not, and the PRICES!
Personally I'd have to agree about the prices. It seems as if Motosource typically runs their pricing high to borderline "gouging."
Larry O’Hara posted a fantastic piece on the installation of the new OEM door hinges. Have a look here (http://www.d-90.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3687) for both passenger and drivers side doors and here (http://www.d-90.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3768) for the rear door on Station Wagons.

Thanks man.
yeah, this week has shone the d90 in just that light needed to get the wheels rollin' on upgrades.
question is... what's not a piece of shit.
I really can't justify spending that kind of money, though i really want them because the white on mine don't look so good.
i think these are quality, but again five bills...

Yeah, no problem. I always enjoy your "reviews." :grin
Personally, I'd follow in Larry's footsteps and go for the RN package because not only is it OEM at half the price, but you retain the OEM image! Which, in my opinion, is important to maintaining a D90, e.g. John Lee's SW (http://www.expeditionexchange.com/johnlee/). All of his modifications retain the D90 spec (if you will) yet is completely functional without it being "Bastardized." While the MotoSource hinges are attractive due to their metallurgy I think they’re hideously ugly in addition to being extremely overpriced.
I'm all for functionality, but it's got to be clean. As a consumer I’d pay top dollar for this combination. I think the RN hinge-kit personifies this to a "T" in this case. Look at what Larry was able to accomplish! His white SW looks superb with the RN hinges (and the MotoSource SS-hardware). I think you would really benefit from this set-up as well.
