Time To Think About Refurb

After eleven years, 100,000 miles and more encounters with trees and rock then I care to recall I am looking at refurbing my 1994 Defender 90. No I am not planning on doing the work myself. Like Oddball in "Kelly's Heros" said "I drive 'em, I don't fix 'em.". I am looking at a place called East Coast Rover Co. in Warren, Maine. No solid plans as to what would be done except I would like a stock looking "no apologies" Defender 90. I was thinking of a 300 Tdi conversion and any upgrade that have been made in the eleven years since it was made.

hope you have deep pockets if you send it off to ECR. What do you want to do? repower repaint upgrade etc. etc.

I'll be interested in hearing about some different options. I have always been curious about how much it might cost at a place like ECR. . . .

Have you looked at new cars? I think of it as getting a new car. A friend just picked up a '06 H1. The only thing he said was the base price was about $130,000. Beside you know the old saying "The difference only between a man and a boy is the price of their toys!".

I called ECR about a galvanized frame 300 TDI conversion, the guy said more than $20K to start...I did hear mention of BWO being able to do the same services as ECR, maybe at a better price, and I'm sure faster (There's a waiting list at ECR last I heard). I can tell you Jesse Ware and BWO is a very nice guy and I'm sure if you gave them a call he could answer any questions you have (or maybe one of those guys will post a reply here...). Depends on what your definition of refurb is. I hear the wait at ECR is 1.5-2 years.

Plenty of other shops exist for refurb. It's worth your time, $$, and piece of mind to get some quotes and references.

Other sources for this would be Jim Pendlton (Pendy is his name on this board).
Also, the 4x4 shop in Williston, Vermont sees a lot of rovers from Rovers North. And their is Overland Engineering, in Eliot, Maine. Run by Matt Browne (Matt and Jesse of BWO did most of the refurb/conversion work on my truck).

ECR certainly gets a lot of press and they do good work, but like everything, shop around. Their are other options that are just as good, if not better.

Also, last I heard, it was closer to the $30k mark for a full galvy frame swap and 300tdi conversion at ECR. Although as has been said, they do good work.

Three reasons for doing it: 1. It is only money; 2. I cannot take it with me; 3. Who else is going to keep the economy going. Besides if I don't spend it on the Defender 90 I'll spend it on NO I WON"T GO THERE.

I signed on to post a link to my site rovahfarm.com but couldn't resist a comment.
East Coast Rover does some fine work, have seen it first hand.
However, if it was my money I would contact Rich Moody in Rhode Island, his web site is roverspecialvehicles.com he fitted a brazilian 2.8 powerstroke to the Tribes 130 that I drive for work and did a fine job. The 300 TDI is a fine engine but the powerstroke is superb!

whats the story on that machine. I have seen one of Pendy's 2.8 swaps in a truck in Co. It seemed to be done up nicely, I was able to drive it man what a machine

I'd advise you to contact Dennis at LinDen Engineering (http://lindenengineering.com/) in Golden, CO. He has the experience, expertise and space to do whatever you want and he's a hell of a nice guy. Contact me if you'd like to talk more about my experience with him and his shop.

Pendy is that truck from the Gulf Coast area, I saw a lot of cars and houses like that after Katrina.

That is an old picture that dslnmud from here shared with me some time back. Telephone pole I think. I just used it for a before and after type mirage :) That vehicle was actually not damaged quite as badly when I fixed it up.

Here is stormtroopers buddy from Ohio I did up last year after a rollover. 93' D110
