I am thinking of swaping my 90 200TDi engine (1989) with a good used BMW or Mercedes one (model 1995 ownwards). Do you have any suggestions for engines ans coversions kits & tips!
In the country I currently stay (Greece), not much technical support is offered!
Thanks & Happy New Year!

Why not just get one of the LR diesals? seems like they could be easily aquired

I have often wondered about those engines. I think the current LRM mag has some info on engine swaps as far as what works and who makes parts to do it. I have it at home so I will take a look tonight.

I think there was a company based in Sweden that manufactured bellhousing adaptors for the Merc engine on a LR box. they used to advertise in the small adds of the LR mags.
Make sure that the 'new' engine delivers enough low toruqe or you'll be disapointed with the performance. I don't think this is a common swap.

I could be WAY off here but I heard somewhere not all that reliable that the 300 TDi was originally designed by BMW. If so, there you go. :)

I have 2 friends that put 5cyl diesels in series 109's one was a N/A and the other a turbo...both were 300 series MB engines though.

200tdi was designed by engineers and the 300dti was mullered by cost cutting accountants, thats why they shred their timing belts.:mad

How do you feel about it mike?? :grin The timing belt fix is easy and cheap. But... was it designed by BMW? Maybe somebody here knows.

My parents both have MB diesels. And boy are they ROCK SOLID engines! One is a '83 240D and the other is a '85 300TD. Both have +300K miles on the clock with only regular tune-ups, valve adjustments and of course, oil changes. I would steer clear of the non-turbo engines, they are a BEAR! On cold mornings it can't get out of it's own way :grin .
Eric
P.S. If you do go with a diesel make sure you change the glow plugs every 4-5 years, if you live in a cold climate! The last thing you want to be doing is blow drying your fuel lines when it's 10 degrees outside, to de-gel the injectors. I know, I've had to do it before!

Eric,
This is great news for me as I am one of those that belive LR is the best 4x4 car but with another engine. (BMW or MB)!!
How you got any other info to share (gear box .LT77 or R380, axes, transfer box and other alterations needed etc.)
Again, this is great help!
Thanks,
CK:rolleyes

James,
you are not alone ....!! Even though I belong to the rare group of Diesel owners in Greece (about 56-60 LR 90 since 1981), I belive diesels are much more fun for 4x4 driving!!

The 1998ish on S.A. spec D-90s use 2.8 petrol BMW engines. it is my understanding that the bell housing is the same with the diesel equivelent.
Also 1995-2002 range rovers used the BMW diesel 6.

Kormas,
The Mercedes engines that I'm referring to are still in a Mercedes and are NOT in a Land Rover. I didn't mean to mislead you, I was just testifying to the durability of the Mercedes diesel engines.

Hey I was just talking to a friend and he told me that the new Fed-Ex trucks use a Mercedes diesel engine and I think it is around 2.5 liters. If it is enough to pull a Fed-Ex van around I think it could move a 90.

I don't like the electronic controls or the automatic trans.
