I use it. My second battery runs the outlets and 400 W inverter on my center console. Great for my electric cooler. Note that part you have linked is just the remote control for the isolator.

As I'm running a 300 TDI, I'm not sure if the isolator relay would handle the current needed if the secondary battery was being used by itself to start it.

Yes, I have had to winch with it once and it was nice not to have to rev the engine to high to get the winch to turn.

Bill Burke notes on his site that Optima recommends NOT using an isolator. I've emailed him (them) on the scoop and no answer yet - two months later. So...???

I also emailed Bill on his winch recommendation and no answer. Anyone know what he uses?

Hellroaring also makes a nice isolator that I just installed last weekend.. I remember a thread on the yahoo 300Tdi board I think with a guy's complete conversation with their helpdesk and it was quite thurough.

One suggestion they have for using it with diesels (and they have a big thing on the nistructions saynig DON'T USE JUST ONE WITH A DIESEL) is to open it up for a while and let some charge trickle over to the main battery. That lessens the load across the isolator. I think I finally found the amp pull of the starter in warm weather and it wasn't more than their rated 200AMP limit. The guy eventually said as long as you're not dealing with a completely dead main, then cranking a 300Tdi should be ok.

With the V8 there is no problem when I disconnect the main and switch it over to start. I did put in a 200amp fuse though to protect the cost of the unit.

The one big difference between the hellroaring and the AB, I think, is the AB needs a separate wire to help it switch? Maybe I'm wrong. But looking at Bob's post in the archives, he had an additional wire for some reason.

I *think* Bill Burke uses Superwinch.
Here in the northwest just about *everyone* runs with Warn winches (although there a couple Ramseys every now and then).

Well, after some pain this weekend trying to get the fuel pump working I came across 2 dead batteries that were being drained by a burnt fuse / burnt fuse area ... hopefully not a big deal. So, I'm wondering if there are any updates on this 'dual battery' isolator unit ?

I'm looking for a good dual battery isolator and don't know which one to get.
I read that the 'HELLROARING' one is a good one (a link: http://www.off-road.com/chevy/reviews/hellroaring/ ) but is there a better one or one with a DIGITAL readout ??

No replies yet? Hmmm, well Nicholas I've been using the hellroaring for about three years and I haven't got any complaints nor any dead batteries. The way I have the system set up prevents the load battery from running dry by supplementing it with the second -backup- battery. Not only do I like this setup but the Hellroaring isolator allows for multiple configurations depending on your needs. Just emial the owner with your questions he's does an exellent job of answering questions and will provide you with any help neccessary for installation or troubleshooting.

Just got the Defender back today from British 4x4.... so I'm going to most likely put it in tomorrow. Runs better than ever. Those guys rule.
