I'm here in Tokyo and couldn't believe what I saw. A white SW the other night and yesterday afternoon an Arles SW. They were both LHD NAS trucks, badged and everything!

I was in Nagoya a little while ago and ran into a Red SW that was NAS spec also with the badge. I wasn't able to get the number though.

No, the one I saw was bone stock. Had I seen that, I probably would have gone running down the street after it.

I saw a green one just outside Tokyo last November - I have a picture somewhere which I will post when I get the time/energy

found that picture - I am not so sure it is a NAS90 now - what do you reckon? It was taken from half way down a bus looking forward - I have blown it up and sharpened it - it's as good as I can get.

I was going through some old photos and forgot that I snapped this pic of a White D90SW in Nagoya. It's got the NAS config as well.

I have a friend that owned a D 90 in Japan several years ago. He said it was exactly like my NAS 90 SW.

Now he lives in Brazil and drives a new 110 diesel. Go figure?

That's odd about the NAS Spec in Japan. I was under the impression that the ones I had see were brought in, but now it seems as if they were probably offered to the GP. Your buddy is a lucky bastard. D110 & Brazilian chicks.

Japanese spec D90s are nearly identical to 1997 NAS D90s.
Very small differences, but they had the 4.0 automatic and NAS style lights and such.
They were offered in Japen even after 1997 so in most cases it is just a Japanese Spec D90, not usually a USA D90 that has been imported to Japan.

The ones I saw were LHD with NAS light configuration, Japan is on the RHD system. Although I saw lots of German and and a few Italian vehicles that were LHD too, lots of LHD GWagons. It's the same everywhere, if you've got money everyone loves an import.

Rover sent a bunch of NAS "style" 90s to Japan.
They look nearly the same as the NAS units, but instead of the front side marker light (parking light) that light is a little further back on the fender (wing) and is a side turn signal repeater.
That is about the only way I know how to spot the difference from a distance, and they were LHD and had badges and all.
I've seen a number of Japanese Spec D90s sneak back into the USA that is how I have seen the differences close up. They also have cool plastic fuel lines and bunch of other changes, but bascially looks just like a 1997 NAS. We work on a couple of them.

FWIW

In '98 LR built a handful of 50th Anniversary model Defender 90 SW's for the Japanese market that were painted white rather than the regular Metallic flip Blue colour. The 50th was effectively a way for LR to rid themselves of surplus NAS vehicles and parts when NAS imports stopped. Therefore, the 50th spec was almost indentical to NAS Station Wagon spec except for market specific details like lights plus some shiny 50th Anniversary trim such as the chrome window handles.

50th's all have a NAS plaque on the rear, except the 50th plaque is stamped with a 'limited edition' number.
