So the truck has decided to dump all of the trans fluid on the ground. I think its one of the seals were it mates to the t-case. How hard would it be for me to replace or seal the leak.

It all depends on the seal that is leaking. If it's just that the drain plug fell out it's 5 minutes of easy living. But if you have to drop the tranny to get to it, it's automatically an 11 on the pain-in-the-ass meter. Unfortunately, I can't say for sure without knowing which seal is leaking. But generally it wouldn't dump that much fluid if the transfer case adapter had problems.

Before you start removing the transfercase....you might check the vent line...if it's plugged, the trans will build up pressure internally and leak. Is it an R380 or an LT77?

Hmm... I'll have to check the vent on it. Its an LT77. It looks like its leaking from the seals on the transfer case adapter. But I will check everything when I get home from work tomorrow.

What sort of oil's coming out?
EP or ATF?
If it's EP them the seal for the input to the transfer case has gone.
It's possible to drop the transfer case with the main box still on by taking up the floor and lowering it with a hoist through the center cover on the seat box.
First time I did the job I took the whole seat box out bot with the leavers off the box it will come out with the box in place.
Blow through the vent lines with some compressed air first though.
Just a thought, the drain plugs are
a) in
b) tight?

Its ATF. I switched to synthetic ATF about a month ago. If that makes any difference.

Where is it leaking from exactly?
Clutch housing or more to the rear?

To the rear right before the t-case.

in my experience synthetic oil will make thing's that previously didn't leak, drop fluid like a stuck pig. (if I had a nickle for every call I get .... "I just switched to synthetic......I've got this really bad leak")

Update: heard from the shop today. They are saying I need to replace the trans again. Its been maybe a year since the last time it was replaced. According to Patrick the shop manager when they drained what was left of the oil a lot of metal shavings came out. Funny when the mechanic working on it called and talked to me last frday he made no mention of metal shavings just a lack of oil. Patrick is thinking there is a lot of bearing damage to it. I'm getting a feeling that he's trying to take me on this. On a side note he's supposedly be getting a lot of grief from RDS about a replacement trans since that's were they got the last one.

That's bad :( What you been doing to that truck :confused I got 150K miles out of 1 LT77and 98k miles out of the one in the 90 before over enthusiastic use of reverse gear whilst stuck against an oak tree on a 45° slope caused it's sudden and terminal decline. :angry
Any chance of a waranty claim?

One off roading trip and the rest highway driving. No warrenty claim. Frankly I think he's trying to screw me. So I'll have them throw it back together again and I'll drive it untill it destroys itself. Or go with there reccomendation and have it replaced again the get ride of it. Its been nothing but a drain on my wallet. We will see.

There's always some metal in the oil when you drain the LT77. Scary when it's the first time you drain the oil. If it's not making noise fill it up and see how it goes :rolleyes
