What winch do you use?

Wat winch do you use and why? Any stories are cool also but no debating Just your experience.

Example:

I bogged down an XD9000i on my 3500 lb Ford Ranger when I was badly stuck in mud and the four wheel drive was not working. I did not have enough cable to use a snatch block (I was also using 25ft of chain) so i ended up getting pulled out back-wards.

But the same winch on the same truck pulled a 9000lb skidsteer stuck in mud. I had to chain off to a big tree and the skidsteer was in drive but it still got it out.

Warn. Came with the SW. I have used it on occassion for winching other people out of mud pits nad what not. One self recovery. Overall I like the winch. I was thinking about getting a superwinch, but why? Mine still works fine for the stuff I can get myself into at the moment.

Come on, I want some good winching stories! Everyone says 1.5 times the full weight but if you have used less or found you needed more then lets hear it!

Hauled my V8 88" out of a mud hole with a 1.6 tonne tirfor hand winch & snatch block, took about an hour seemed like a day and left me pooped for about a week:(

I'll say this about my winch... Superwinch S9000 It's melting my synthetic line after very limited use. I'm not pleased as the line wasn't cheap. Next winch will not be a planetary gear.

I've had the same 8274 on every 4x4 I've owned since 1975... Man I'm old! It's the only part I wouldn't sell with the vehicle!
I've had to replace a couple parts, probably due to neglect on my part but it has never let me down..
It's fast and powerful and hauled me up numerous waterfalls and boulders, as well as hauling a lot of folks out of their own trouble...
I'd say 60 winchings a year from 75 to 99 never one failure...
I've gone to the HS9000i on the Disco but only because I got a cheap one... It too has performed very nicely but the free spool is not working... 8274! You'll never regret it!!!

my warn 9500 has pulled my fat (but usually others) out-o-the fire on more than one occassion!

that said, now that i've switched to dual yellow top's in parallel, i'll be a bit more confident next time (and there will definitely be a next time!) i have to lead cable...

Some of these winch stories seem a little lacking in the 'plot' department!

Back in 1999 my friends and I took out the d-90 to the cedars... (basically a swamp and thought that because our "welded dif" fj40 made it through that we could do it in the defender with super swampers) to make a long story short... 4 guys no winch anchor, 400 yards from a tree sank into sludge. To make matters worse our cell phones got no reception, so our "mud-bogging" friends had no idea where we were, and we were definitely on some private land. The defender came with a warn xd9000. I sent out the guys to look for fallen trees or pipes, or anything we could use as an anchor. We came upon some old treated lumber and were able to wedge enough of it into the mud (by using the winch and pulling them in like stakes) to pull us out.
Lesson:
never go in the mud, alone, or without some kind of anchor
But the warn winch has been used from everything as a NJ --stupid Honda civic stuck in snow savior -- to a makeshift cherry picker (when used in conjunction with a large tree branch and a chains)... and the only thing that needs replacement is the cable.

Overall the winch is slow, I much prefer the 8000 lb on the fj40 I think it is a model 8472 or 8742 or something like that.
Oh also worth noting would be that the winch remote after countless uses needs to be jammed into the receptacle for it to work. Nothing major, but they could make it a little more rugged.
All in all the winch has not failed.

Nice. I did that with my ser III 88 once. The side looks a bit crunched still to this day.

Warn. Local Oregon company; almost everyone uses them around here; local shops have good prices on them.

'have an M10000 on the D90SW; the ARB bumper was made for it. 'have never used it for recovery, although it's come in handy around the farm for moving things around and wall-raising

'have an XD9000i on the Disco. 'used it a couple of times for pulling others out. Once a neighbor drove too close to the side of the road and got her right tires stuck in a ditch. Another time at the coast, we watched a couple of clueless young guys get stuck in the sand in a big lifted full-size P/U with huge tires. They forgot, or didn't know, you had to lock the front hubs. They got the back axle sunk up to the differential pretty quickly. They refused my help until the tide started to come in, and then submitted to the humility of being pulled out by a guy in a Disco, out with his wife and kids for a Sunday drive.
