Saddle Tank?

So, now more than ever, after driving for 24 hours this weekend, I'd like to explore additional fuel storage in the form of saddle tank. I had a look at the write-up here.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this, or similar setup?

I would prefer to go with only one fuel pump for both tanks.

I have one of those tanks as well and I might be looking to sell the whole system. I need to find out if I am going to replace it or not. I will put it in the for sale section if I am going to. Thanks.

I have a 9 gallon aux. tank under the passenger seat box/floor. It is not the UK spec tank that goes under the seat. You fill it from under the rear passenger wheel well. It has its own pump and filter, which pump to the main tank. I like this setup because there is no switching tanks, and only one sending unit. I know how far I can go on the tanks, so I just switch the aux. pump on while driving. It fills my other tank about 3/4 full. I mounted a toggle switch on the AC duct, all the way to the left, on the side. I made sure the switch was out of the way. I also have a red light mounted on the dash that comes on when the second pump is running. It is too much work to do on a V8 to use switchable tanks, because of the separate sending units and pumps, lines and valves to switch needed.

I have what I beleive to be the same tank Chris mentions above. The best part is I have it complete in my garage. If you like I can take a few pics and send them to you. Or, if you're in NH anytime soon you can come by and take a look for yourself. I'm in Concord, NH.

It looks like I am going to be selling my setup. It is an almost new tank with 2 dents. Not large but there. I will be getting picts soon. I thought it you wanted it I would give you first crack. Tank goes new for $350. Thinking $200 for the tank and as much else as I can pull out and the new tank still work. Let me know!

Is this the setup that Rover Accessories sells? They have a $750 Kit for a 9 or 13 gallon tank. Has anyone here used it?

My twin tank set up uses a second pump to transfer fuel from the aux tank to the main (see write up in custom mods). It's the euro tank and holds about 55 litres (12 imperial gals)
I'm real pleased with it and now have a range of 750 miles + in conjunction with the 80 litre main tank. The joys of a 200 Tdi:grin

David, the tank has two dents :grin Sometimes I wonder how many people get sucked into buying the really expensive stuff like that. Just because it's a kit, doesn't mean it should cost more! Okay, so maybe I'm the only person who knows that ;)

Okay, back to serious. Next question is, how have people protected the tank? I was thinking a skid plate mounted from the sill and slider, to the fram is the ticket. But I'd really like to see other options or just hear some expertise. Since the tank sits low (I assume), I'm thinking it's pretty vulnerable.

David, me too... I think I will do what you said and run a plate from the frame rail to the slider. The tank sitts just above the frame rail so this should be no problem..

My tank does have the optional factory skid plate but it is worthless. See: two dents. I was going to do the same thing, a 1/4in steel or 3/8in alluminum plate from the slider to the frame. Only catch is the tank sits about half an inch below the slider so the metal of the skid plate is going to have to have a 30 degree bend or so to run straight to the frame. No biggie, if you have the tools.

Funny you mention the 30 degree bend David. I had the chance to check out another D90 the other night with the same tank and skid. He had built the skid plate the exact same way. While his sliders were larger than most, he still needed that bend in there.
